Some F1 news!

BMW signs Heidfeld
16/09/2005 11:31

BMW has signed a three-year contract with Nick Heidfeld, 28, to race for the German manufacturer's new 2006 F1 team.

BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen comments: "For us, a new era in Formula 1 will begin on 1 January 2006 when BMW takes over the team operated by Peter Sauber.

"We are very pleased that Nick will be with us in what will undoubtedly be a difficult initial phase.

"He is not simply a fast and courageous driver, he is also an analytical and meticulous worker. Nick already knows the two sites in Munich and Hinwil, and is familiar with everybody involved."

Heidfeld, who is currently recovering from a cycling accident in Switzerland, said: "I?m really looking forward to the future. As far as I?m concerned, this represents the fulfilment of a big dream.

"I have a great deal of respect for the work carried out in Hinwil from 2001 to 2003. And for nearly a year now, I've experienced at first hand the commitment and resources BMW puts into its Formula 1 project.

"Naturally, I'm not expecting a miracle during the first season after a new start in 2006. But I'm confident that the new team will be successful over the long term."

Heidfeld has been lining up on the grid for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team since 2005. He achieved his first F1 pole position in May at the N?rburgring and took second place in two races (Monaco and N?rburgring).

Frank fried by former rival
16/09/2005 11:31

Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has criticised Sir Frank Williams for not pushing harder to retain BMW's support.

The Irish ex-chief told F1 Racing magazine that 2006 customer supplier Cosworth do not have the clout to win on merit.

"I don't understand BMW and I certainly don't understand Frank," Jordan said. "Cosworth ... can only build an engine with the cash that Williams pays them, which won't match a manufacturer's ... muscle.

"The more you spend, the quicker you go. Cash is king."

EJ is critical of Frank and team co-owner Patrick Head's apparent refusal to negotiate with BMW. He suggests that the German carmaker might have stuck around if a share of the team had been put on offer.

He added: "In the current climate, I'd rather be a 50 per cent part of something that's winning than 100 per cent of something that can't win."

Rosberg on Williams' 'list'
16/09/2005 11:31

Sir Frank Williams has admitted that Nico Rosberg, son of Williams' 1982 champion Keke, stands a chance of debuting for the team in Japan and China.

The Grove based boss told The Guardian: "Nico is on a list with quite a few other people."

20-year-old Rosberg, German and not Finnish like his father, is a frontrunner in the GP2 category this year, effectively ruling him out for the upcoming Brazilian GP.

But Frank may use the opportunity of BMW-bound Nick Heidfeld's injuries to trial the youngster in the last two grands prix, although the seat is presently in the able hands of tester Antonio Pizzonia.

Williams admitted that 'quite a few variables' will be considered before Nico - or someone else - is given the nod. "One of the variables," said the Briton, "is obviously whether or not Nick is fit.

"No decision has yet been made."

Klien - 'I'm no rookie'
15/09/2005 13:52

Christian Klien has staked a claim to keep his Red Bull seat next year, after the energy drink company's management said that Vitantonio Liuzzi is also a candidate.

Certainly, with the Red Bull buy-out of 'rookie' team Minardi, both youngsters' immediate futures in formula one are assured. 22-year-old Klien, though, said he should be the front runner for the role next to veteran David Coulthard.

"2006 will be my third season in formula one," he told Austria's 'APA' news agency, "so I do not really consider myself a 'rookie' any more."

He continued: "In this business, experience is everything."

Signed-and-sealed 2006 Red Bull driver David Coulthard agrees with Klien that he has now earned a place on the F1 grid.

"I've been pretty impressed with him," the Scot, 34, told Motorsport Aktuell. "In many races this year he has pushed me rather hard and he has also improved with time." -GMM

SOME MORE FROM F1

Alonso proud to have beaten Schumacher
Fernando Alonso says winning the Formula One title while Michael Schumacher is still around would be like beating Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France.
The Renault driver can become the sport's youngest champion in Brazil this weekend with the 24-year-old Spaniard needing just six points to put the title out of the reach of McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen.

Schumacher's five-year reign has already ended, the seven times world champion ruled out of the reckoning at the Italian Grand Prix earlier this month.

Alonso refused to take anything for granted at the Interlagos circuit on Thursday, saying he would explain once he had won the title what it felt like to take over from the sport's most successful driver.

"But for sure...with Michael on the track it is much better to win a title," he said.

"If not, it is the same as Armstrong in the Tour de France. The (first) winner (after him) will be maybe because Armstrong is not there."

American Armstrong bowed out of cycling's Tour de France this year after seven wins in a row. Schumacher has a contract to the end of next year.

"With Michael it is the same. If Michael retires and someone (then) wins, everybody will think that with Michael on the track it would have been a different story," said Alonso.

"Kimi and me had the possibility this year and one of the two will be winning with Michael on the track so it will be better for everybody."

Alonso has won six races this year, the same number as Raikkonen, but leads the Finn by 25 points with two races remaining after Brazil.

After saying earlier in the week that he planned to go for victory at Interlagos, the Spaniard recognised that he might have to play a tactical race in the end.

"At the moment I race for fun and we have to attack for victory," he said.

"If, at the middle of the race, we see we are in a good position for the championship then I will try to race as intelligently as I can, like in the last races, and make sure I have enough points to have my goal," said Alonso.

He said he was confident in the car after tests at Silverstone and expected to be fighting for the podium.

Well, after seeing the times from the practise sessions, MS was 6th, and Alonso was 10th  and Sato was slower!! Good news, he might forget to use the breaks again! Sato is kicked out of BAR anyway, so he can be a loose cannon now, and ride a destruction derby..... I hope for a good result for Ferrari, and that Alonso doesn't win YET!

Some news for those who don't know. Jenson Button has paid his way out of the Williams drive for next year and is free to drive for BAR.

Come on Kimi, show that cocky little Spaniard the way home!

Yet again Tiago Monteiro impresses, out-qualifying both Williams and the Red Bull of Coulthard, someone give this lad a better car! The Renault's seem to have the edge round here, looking at practice and now qualy. Klien did a super job too.

i dont think thats for only here stevie. Now i think it will be same for remaining 2 races as Renault has done significant improvement and now they r almost close to Mclaren in terms of pace and with much better reliability then Mclaren. This is certainly gonna make constructors champs fight very tight!

As it stands for 2006:

Renault:
1. Fernando Alonso
2. TBC
McLaren Mercedes:
3. Kimi Raikkonen
4. Juan-Pablo Montoya

5. Michael Schumacher
6. Felipe Massa
Toyota:
7. Jarno Trulli

Williams Cosworth:
9. Mark Webber
10. Antonio Pizzonia/Nico Rosberg/Takuma Sato

21. Scott Speed (TBC)

Not too many seats up for grabs at the moment. One that interests is Villeneuve at BMW, if he loses the seat I think thats his career over to be honest.

It's quite amazing that he got back into F1 in the first place!!! But i'd have to say that Frank must have a mental illness to hire Takuma Sato!!! And to save us all a huge argument I won't dare dwell on Massa at Ferrari ;) Back on the Williams topic, Jungle Boy (Antonio Pizzonia) would aslo be a better optin than him, but of course Nico Rosberg is in the fray.....

Well he's not at BAR/Honda (whatever they will be called next year) next year!

Dodgy qualifying thanks to more rain at Suzuka:
