Night races would be fun to watch but I find it unacceptable that the main reason being cited for them is to make the timings suitable for viewing in European countries. F1 is a global sport so why be so concerned about the Europeans?

most of the sponsor money comes from here i presume?

True, but i still love the sounds of night races, ODI floodlit matches have been a success, floodlit cricket matches have been a success, floodlit horseracing events have been a success, now its F1s turn to shine at night time!

maybe they could hold a floodlit silverstone race depending on public reaction to it...

... it would also even it up for the aussies, americans feeling hard done by for what could go down in singapore

It cant be that bad, they dont seem that bothered that i have to stay up till 4am to watch WWE events etc, so they should have to do the same to watch F1 :p

I don't think a European race would ever be held during the night due to the staggering number of viewing figures for European races in Europe as they are at the moment.

As its been said, F1 gets its money from European TV deals, other countries just dont pay as much as the UK or Germans for example.

Personally I'm not sure about holding night races, it seems a bit gimicky and they should concentrate on finding a formula for good tight races with plenty of overtaking. For me this is just another false add-in like refueling. Having said that I did go to the first ever BTCC night race a few years back and it was pretty special, not to mention Le Mans at night (Something every motorsport fan should witness). Melbourne will hold its race slightly later in the day but only by about 1hr30mins or something.

As for extra street circuits, if they are well designed then they shouldn't be a problem, lets not forget Melbourne is technically a street circuit. The problem with Monaco is its too narrow, not that its a street race. If you can create a decent layout with plenty of room then there is no problem, if the Americans can manage it I'm sure everyone else can ;)

Why isn't Monaco a street race Kev, you obviously know more than me but i have been to the Monaco Grand Prix, and its on the streets of Monaco, and they close the streets for the event.

I understand that Europe is the biggest market for F1, but at the same time the growth potential outside is much more.

I have nothing against a "night race" as mentioned before, but the fact that Singapore would be considered only if they agreed to do it like that doesnt sound too good.

I also think its good that they are looking to reduce the number of races in Europe, as more and more countries show interest in hosting an F1 race. Having two races in the same country just wasnt feasible and an alternating by year German GP taking place in Nurburgring and Hockenheim was a step in the right direction. Although getting a second race in Spain was again, well, you know.

He said - it is a street race, but that wasnt its main problem. Although I dont think there is anything wrong with them. India are planning to have its GP as a street race as well.

I agree. I'm not sure if its there now but there always was a rule that said a county could only hold one GP per season, thus all these stupid names being used where they pretend the GP is being held somewhere else (Nurburgring actually appeared on the calendar as the Luxembourg GP once!) Most certainly new countries should be given a GP over an existing country being given a second but established European races shouldn't live under the constant threat of being replaced by somewhere that Bernie considers to be new and exciting either.

O sorry kev i misread your post, i see your point now :p

That BTCC night race was not only amazing to see, but it was a bloody good race too!

Exactly. Having seen a few races from CART a few years ago (now Champ Car) in the US, it is definitely possible to overtake on street circuits, but as you say, it all depends on the circuit design. Look at Monza. People immediately think it'll be great for overtaking, but it actually isn't because the Parabolica (a fast sweeping corner) leads onto the pit straight and given the current aero rules, it's virtually impossible to overtake unless you have a engine that is substantially more powerful than the car in front. The chicane leading onto the back straight is hardly a chicane, and the lesmo's are medium speed corners which lead into the third "chicane".

the race was a bit boring tho.

does anyone know where brundle has been for the last 2 hungary races?
when button won it was anthony davidson summarising

He's most likely on holiday with his family at this time of the year or something then...
