Cape Town F1 track picture
31/08/2005 11:16

We have managed to obtain a graphic of the Formula One circuit that has been designed by Herman Tilke for Cape Town - the same person who designed Turkey's new track.

You can download a 2 mb zip file showing all the details of the track here

It is claimed the circuit will be built on a triangular piece of ground next to Cape Town International Airport, and will have direct access from the N2 highway via a feeder road, with its own intersection.

The plan includes grand stands, parking, and all other facilities, and the original graphic- which we have enhanced for clarity - even suggests the racing lines drivers might take.

Interestingly, there are a number of water features on the site marked as "retention ponds" which critics say suggests the site may contain high levels of ground water.

The 17-corner circuit features both slow corners, and a twisty - but high speed - latter section.

Todt adds fuel to Rossi fire
01/09/2005 11:34

Valentino Rossi will be Ferrari's test or race driver in 2007, another Italian newspaper has reported with confidence.

Corriere della Sera also quoted Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who didn't deny the rising speculation surrounding the 26-year-old MotoGP champion and sensation.

"I can say that the Ferrari technicians at the (Fiorano) tests were impressed (with Rossi's driving)," the Frenchman said.

"He obviously has real natural talent."

Todt is undoubtedly concerned, though, by all the Rossi-to-switch media attention the rider is attracting.

"I don't think he should be put under so much pressure," the Maranello based boss added.

The Napoleon-like chief also hit out at widespread media criticism of 2005-spec Ferrari, who - although 1999 to 2004 constructors' champions - has failed to win a single race (Indy aside) this year.

"I don't think our past achievements should be forgotten so hastily," Todt insisted. -GMM

The South African bidding consortium's David Gant has said a contract with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone could be signed by the end of this year.

chumi doubts Monza safety
02/09/2005 13:58

World champion Michael Schumacher lead a queue of drivers on Friday worrying about the safety standards at Monza ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix.

Schumacher said the second chicane, the Variante Della Roggia, was a "worry" safety-wise and had been so since the corner was re-profiled in time for the 2000 race.

"It has been a worry to us for many years," said the Ferrari driver, one of the leaders of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association (GPDA), which has put safety as its key priority.

"The GPDA has been sending out notes for that chicane (to be changed) for a long time and I hear every year there's a plan to change it but it just ends up with hearing about it rather than actually action."

The chicane became infamous on its debut in the 2000 race for an eight-car pileup on the opening lap that led to the tragic death of track Marshall Paolo Ghislimberti, who was struck by a flying tyre during the incident.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher believes that such a corner has no place on a track as fast as Monza, where straight-line speeds exceeded 230mph in testing last week.

He added: "The cars are very nervous, very much on the edge all the time. It seems to be a little bit more forgiving right now because you can feel you're going to lose it earlier so you can correct it earlier and stop a spin.

"Actually they do behave better than they have done in the past compared to the past years. There seems to be more grip available and the car handles pretty good, so in a way it's fine."

Championship leader Fernando Alonso echoed Schumacher's thoughts about the cars in their low-grip, high-speed format, but admitted that he also enjoys the handling more with the shallow-wing set-up.

"It's always the same here at Monza in low downforce," said Alonso. "It is a little bit difficult to drive the car and to brake at high speeds.

"From a driving point of view we like it, but at the same time you think it's a little bit dangerous driving at 350kph, and if you have a brake or mechanical problem then always there is a big accident.

"Hopefully everything will be okay for everybody and hopefully we will see a good show."

FIA disappointed after summit
02/09/2005 13:18

Max Mosley described Wednesday's Milan meeting with F1 teams and manufacturers as 'constructive.'

That, for a sport deeply infected with seemingly intractable politics, is a start.

The FIA president told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper: "We'll need more meetings to reach a definitive agreement, but I'm convinced that it's really possible to find a good deal."

Mosley, indeed, is in Monza for that very reason.

At stake is common ground over regulations for 2008, after the governing body and the carmakers' 'GPMA' alliance separately drafted rules.

An FIA spokesman, however, revealed a little more than Mosley when he said the French body was 'slightly disappointed' with the proposals put on the table by the united teams and carmakers.

"But progress is being made," Autosport quoted him as saying.

I think Button is a great driver. Yes, he should be getting podiums more frequently but bad luck and some errors have contributed to this problem. I think he's at the team though, BAR are on their way up!

I would rather not bring disrepute to the 'Grand-Prix-F1' thread, thank you very much.
