F1 engine rule hits Kimi
03/09/2005 20:41
Formula One's new engine-change rule claimed its first pole position victim on Saturday.
Finland's Kimi Raikkonen was quickest in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix but will start Sunday's race in 11th position after an engine-change penalty.
New rules this season limit teams to one engine for every two races and changes result in a 10-position penalty on the starting grid.
Raikkonen covered the Monza circuit in 1 minute, 20.878 seconds - 0.176 seconds quicker than McLaren-Mercedes teammate Juan Pablo Montoya. Montoya will start first, with drivers' leader Fernando Alonso of Renault also on the front row after clocking the third fastest time of 1:21.319.
Ferrari's seven-time world champion, Michael Schumacher, qualified in seventh position in 1:21.721.
"Raikkonen qualified fastest but Montoya will start from the pole," Formula One press delegate Alexandra Schieren said.
Raikkonen has gained five pole positions previously this season and eight overall in his career.
Schieren said Formula One does not keep official statistics on pole positions, but that historians would likely award Raikkonen the pole with an asterisk.
Penalty a major blow
The team changed the engine due to a valve problem - the third such change Raikkonen has suffered in the last six races.
Mercedes motor sports chief Norbert Haug said the team has to improve its reliability.
"This is being addressed within Mercedes-Benz and I am sure that everybody will do a thorough job to achieve total reliability in the same way we have achieved the speed of our package," Haug said.
The penalty was a major blow to Raikkonen's championship hopes.
Alonso leads Raikkonen by 24 points in the drivers' standings with five races remaining and will only lose the title if Raikkonen outperforms him by a large margin the rest of the season.
"We don't have the quickest car but we're taking the opportunities McLaren is giving to us," Alonso said. "Tomorrow I hope to have a good start and can even think to win the race."
Alonso finished second in the Turkish GP two weeks ago after Montoya drove wide on the penultimate lap. He has also benefited from McLaren engine blowouts on several occasions this season.
"I'm trying to race with intelligence and get as many points as possible," Alonso said.
McLaren has been significantly faster than other teams in practice and qualifying this weekend and Raikkonen may be able to work his way through traffic to the front.
Monza is the fastest circuit in Formula One and its long straights make overtaking easier than at most other tracks.
"I will try to win the race because we have a quick car," Raikkonen said. "If we get through the first corner without problems, I can have a good race. I have nothing to lose."
