World Cup Group B - Pool Matches Discussion Thread

Oh, that should have been a six surely.
It's a six everyday of the year, anyone who says differently can go do one. Zimbabwe were plain and simply robbed. TV umpire is probably one of those associate worshippers.

Robbed.

What a ridiculous comment, the TV umpire never made a decision, Williams made it for him.

Man I was at the SA-Pakistan game but had to leave at the innings break because it was my sister's 21st bday that night. It would have been such a good game to see in full.

I was right next to the sightscreen and the stupid fire machines which blocked part of my view and were really hot when they went off

TV umpire should have opened his eyes a little more and then signalled to the on field umpire to call Williams back.

John Mooney knew how big a game this was and how big the wicket of Williams was that he was willing to cheat. He knew that wasn't a legit catch.

He was watching his foot the entire time - he knew exactly where it was and moved carefully.

So you think it was a clean take?

Yes. I think you can see the shadow his foot is casting on the pepsi ad:

I certainly never could see the movement of the rope that the commentators were talking about, and there was no camera angle that conclusively showed his foot was touching, even when they zoomed in as far as they could.

I'm kinda glad the catch wasn't next to that LG rope when it is half gone - I hate the fact that those things are flimsy bits of foam that can make the difference between a six and a wicket, just so they can have a slight bit more advertising.

People seem to be going mad about that catch but to be honest, no matter how many times I see it I just cannot see any clear evidence that the foot is touching the boundary.

Crucially, once the batsman has left the field he cannot be called back anyway. Batsmen are often stopped before they leave the field to check a no ball or something, but if they cross the boundary and are heading for the dressing rooms there's nothing that can be done.

Fact is, regardless of that catch, Zimbabwe should have got the runs and collapsed.

There was clear movement as his foot came back off the rope, you can see the rope pop back into shape.

If that's true then why the hell wasn't there any clear communication between the umpire and Williams??

A quick "hang on we're just checking if he touched the rope" would have been enough. Once again it's poor umpiring.

Normally its pretty clear they're checking it, and the cricinfo article I read suggested he was informed by the umpires.

You can blame the umpires but you certainly can't blame Mooney. Anyhow looks like, despite beating two full members, Ireland will go out on NRR. England of course can scrape though by beating one (and the lowest ranked) full member.

I support Scotland but I can still feel injustice for Ireland...

Was a clearly a 6 for me as there was movement of the rope. Pretty sure Mooney knew as well but was hoping the tv evidence wouldn't be clear ;P Silly from Williams to leave the field as well.

Also still waiting for someone to use the c word to describe zim here....

stefan - I actually think its sort of a backhand compliment for South Africa that the 'C' tag is only associated with them. They are so good that only they can choke, no one else.

You can, you know if your foot touches something. It's just straight out cheating.

Anyway...I'm over this now, time to turn our attention to our next match against the Indians :)

I dont think any umpire does that TBH. The moment the catch was takne it was a dubious one and Williams ought to have stayed on. Had Williams not walked off the ground, he would have still batted and the game might have ended differently.

Also whenever the replays are being checked, it is always shown on the big screen on the ground. Beats me why Williams left the ground.
