Champions League Second Qualifying Round 1st Leg

Line-ups
Hansen makes only a minor change to tactics, wingers playing deeper to provide better link up with the midfield. Djibril Cisse replaces Craig Bellamy up front and Riise replaces Zenden on the left wing. Artmedia playing a simple 4-4-2 formation.

Match Report

Liverpool get off to a flyer when Crouch lays on Garcia who hits a 30 yard top corner screamer. 1-0 Liverpool. Route one stuff from Liverpool pays off in the 8th minute when Reina boots long, Crouch flicks on and Gerrard slots home to make it 2-0. This is looking far too easy. Artmedia seemed to be getting back in it, coming close with 2 long range efforts from Bakos. On the 31 minute mark John Arne Riise whips in a corner towards the back post, Garcia peels away from his marker and nods home to make it 3-0. Artemedia began to come at Liverpool in numbers but fail to break down the 3 man defence. On the 44th minute Hyypia clears long and finds Ciise who beats a defender and powers one into the roof of the net to give Liverpool a massive 4-0 lead at the break. There were more goals to come after the break as well when the ball bobbled loose to Didi Hamann on the edge of the box who rifled it into he corner via a defender. 5-0. The 6th and final goal came with a bit of role-reversal between Crouch and substitute Bellamy. A long ball forward by Carragher was flicked on by Bellamy and beautifully finished by Crouch. Liverpool cam close again late on through Gerrard but it finished 6-0, an absolute rout.

Now thats what I call a thrashing. I've noticed you've been trying new and different formations. But its working.

Congrats on the win, and you can now rest a few players for the second leg in Bratislava.

Awesome thread!
Loving the presentation, I hope this continues.
Great Play from the Reds :D

Thanks Hopa, glad you like it.

Liverpool given good draw for the third round

Liverpool are fully expected to go through to the group stages after they were drawn against minnows Sheriff or Trabzonspor. Neither side should cause any problems to the in-form Reds.

Second Leg Ties

Line ups

Hansen rests Reina, Carragher, Alonso, Gerrard, Riise and top scorer Crouch after the first leg win. Benain Idrizaj given his debut. Artmedia stick with 4-4-2 and hope to salvage some pride.

Match Report

Liverpool start very defensively and are obviously looking for a draw. After 35 minutes Liverpool finally launch a meaningfull attack but Idrizaj's shot is comfortably saved. Suchy clears long and finds Bakos who beats the defender and slots it in past Scott Carson. 1-0 Artmedia at half time. Hansen brings on Gerrard, Crouch and Carragher at half time in a bid to liven things up but fails, Liverpool play out the match and coast into the next round 6-1 on aggregate.

Marian Bakos sounds like the Slovakian equivalent of Milan Baros, perhaps they're related in some strange Czechoslovakian way :p

Brilliant presentation, and it's a good thing we won the 1st leg 6-0 :p

:D Lol!
Bakos obviosly got the footballing gene rather than the "Stupid-hair-and-rubbish-buy" gene

A Quick Look Ahead

Liverpool's first few games are by no means easy. To start off an away trip to Everton is bad enough, the first time the Merseyside derby has ever opened a Premiership season, but then a home match against new boys Sunderland and then a very tricky away tie at Fratton Park against Portsmouth doesn't make it any easier. Looking further on, the Christmas period looks tough as well. In December they face Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and the return Derby. It's going to be a long, hard season for The Reds

Chelsea are clear favourites to win the title but if Arsenal, United and Liverpool improve they could give Chelsea some problems.

Excellent stuff,Liverpool have a decent chance despite those odds, especially after that 6 goaler in that Champions League game.

Gerrard speaks to Garth Crooks about Hansen, Liverpool and the season ahead.

GC - Hello Steve. Thank you for joining me. I'd like to talk to you first about your new manager Alan Hansen. What is your opinion of him?

SG- He's a great guy, I think I speak for all the players when I say I think he's taking us to the top. His coaching style is a lot like what you see of him on TV, he's not afraid to criticise anyone but he really helps you develop your game.

GC - He's only signed one proven player, does that worry you?

SG - No, not at all, we have a great squad here and in my opinion we don't need anyone else desparately.

GC - What do you think of your new teammate, Halil?

SG - He looks a heck of a player, he really could be a star.

GC - Your first game of the season is against Everton, a big step up in class from the sides you have played already, will you approach the game any differently?

SG - No. We'll go out there and do our thing and hopefully bring home 3 points.

GC - Chelsea are hot favourites for the title again, do you think they can be stopped?

SG - Definitely. When we beat them in the Champion League last year, I think that really hurt them and we know how to play them now, so if we can beat them at home and get at least a draw away from home, it will throw the title race wide open.

GC - Steve, one last question, how do you think Liverpool will do this year and what are your goals?

SG - Personally, I think we should be aiming for 1st place in the Premiership. If we play the way we know we can not many teams should be able to beat us. As for Europe, I don't see any reason why we cant do what we did last year.

GC - Thank you

SG - Cheers

A lot more pressure on Liverpool this season, having won the Champions League last year. Rafa has done an excellent job, which will be hard to match for new boy Alan Hansen. I do agree that they are dark horses, but one that can easily step up as serious title contenders during the course of the season.

But then there is Chelsea.

Hopefully El Poole will lose its first game and many more games to come. Good thread this RR, but there would be only one team I would be supporting. :p

I know you like Sunderland Bala, but i'm not going to do reports for all their matches just for you :p

Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round 1st Leg

Line-ups

Hansen opting for the formation used to thump Artmedia 6-0, hoping it will have the same effect on the Turks. Cisse to start alongside top scorer Peter Crouch.Trazbonspor looking to stretch Liverpool out wide with wingers Sen and Ahmet.

Match Report

Liverpool start brightly with Hamann sitting back to allow Gerrard and Alonso to roam forward and it pays off in the 9th minute when a long ball forward was defended shambollically allowing Cisse in to make it 1-0. Liverpool continued to pour forward but after 15 minutes Trazbonsop broke away and Taner played it through Hamann's legs and in to Uruk who equalised. Liverpool almost hit back straight from kick off when Luis Garcia found Cisse who could on find the side netting. He made amends for this miss 5 minutes later when he latched on to a through ball and buried it to give Liverpool the lead again. He then went onto complete his hattrick with a simple header from a corner 5 minutes before half time. 3-1 half time with another big win on the cards. It took 6 minutes after the resart for Luis Garcia to widen the lead. Benmain Izdraij was pushed in the box contesting a header and Garcia cooly converted the penalty sending the keeper the wrong way. The final goal came on 4 minutes later, Peter Crouch getting a well deserved goal when he nodded home Cisse's cross. The drama was by no means over. With 75 minutes played Liverpool won a dubious free kick. Goalscorer Uruk protested only to be waved away by Steven Gerrard. I'll let the match report give the final words...

He has been linked with many top clubs in the past, most recently Tottenham but deals never came. The ?4million transfer fee is said to be the last of Alan Hansens transfer funds unless he sells some fringe players. Some reported to be on their way out are Momo Sissoko, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Steve Finnan.
