Hindi Cinema Discussion

I saw 'Oh My God!' today. What a movie. One of my favorite Bollywood movies ever. Great message. I think everyone should watch this.

I agree. I liked Akshay Kumar (Who I usually hate) in this film, didn't overact as usual.

Saw "Barfi!" Wow! Whatte movie!! Nice, Heart Touching Story.....Acting Was Top Notch by almost all but it is Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra Who Steal our Hearts and make us emote with them.... This Is a Movie which shouldn't be missed.. Hats Off to the director Anurag Basu who directed it!:cheers:thumbs

waiting for dhoom3

2012 was a bad year and not many good movies and i had a huge expectation from talaash but that was also a bad direction of a good script.any news about dhoom 3? it was supposed to be released on christmas but looks like the release has been delayed.anyone knows the new release date?

We had quite a few decent movies this year including Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar and Barfi ! I personally felt that this year was a better one as compared to 2011. As for D3, dunno where you got the news that it is supposed to release this year,it was always to go on air in 2013.

I think Hindi cinema has entered an era wherein one simply needs to go to the movie theatre and switch his/her mind off. Movies the likes of K-786, Dabangg, SoS are all similar in this regard.

From the reviews, the movie definitely has all the makings of being a super-duper hit. Though one can easily and grossly attribute it to Salman Khan.

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of these mindless comedies and mindboggling stunts. I don't even care to watch Rohit Shetty's comedies. They just don't have stories. Yes, they make big collections at the box office but I'd always prefer to watch a movie like Talaash or Singham than to watch K786, Rowdy Rathore or Golmaal 2/3. At least they have some sort of storyline and we feel attached to the movie in a way. Its not that directors like Rohit can't make great films. He is the one who have made the films like Zameen and Singham but public have given better response to mindless comedies than some serious genre movies which is why, I think, the directors are making more and more such mindless comedies.

I do think this trend of mindless action films which are usually southern remakes will pass.People will get bored sometime.E.g. Salman khan has done far too many mindless action flicks. While I liked Wanted ,I thought Dabang was mediocre attempt to cash the money cow.I really hope Dabang 2 fails as it would mean such mindless "masala" films reduce in number.I know though that this will again be a hit which will further encourage the directors to go this route.

Dabaang-2 is making record collections as we speak! But yes as you say, the trend will pass. In the South, we were fed with these masala flicks (the rural masala flicks) for long and we got fed up of it and now those flicks have started bombing that the big heroes are moving over to more urbane subjects and fresher films. That's why I was surprised as to how Bollywood took the opposite route and started welcoming those mindless flicks. But its just a trend and will pass.

Have to admit Golmaal 1 was pretty good. I though it was going to have good sequels. But my god, where all the sequels crap. No story what so ever.

Agreed. I have not watched Dabangg 1 or 2, and even though it is a massive hit, don't intend to watch it.

I liked Dabangg 2. If you liked Dabangg then you will like Dabangg 2 too. Salman Khan is brilliant in the movie.

Never really liked Useless action masala movies. Bollywood is too much focus on South audience, the only reason I can think for these movies to be made again and again and again. North audience never liked Dabaang. While we do also have romantic movies and everyone here in India doesn't mind these movies. Considering the people in India are used to action with romance genre, There won't be any change in Bollywood for a long time as long as they are getting their money. My friends prefers watching any flop/useless Hindi movie instead of The Dark Knight Rises/Avengers. :facepalm

Come to England. It is the other way around. :p

I haven't watched Avengers but from everything I know it was a typical Hollywood superhero action movie with nothing special (except Scarlett Johansson!).

IMO, there's been no noteworthy mainstream comedy in Bollywood after Akshay Kumar's Chandni Chowk to China flopped. Especially Akshay Kumar went downhill from there, his only watchable movie since then has been Housefull (and Oh My God! if that counts).

Right. I still have Golmaal-Fun Unlimited in my PC for the sole reason that I love watching it over and over again but as you said, the sequels were crap. I hope somehow such comedies and those with overboard stunts goes flop and the trend ends in near future. If its a comedy, I would love to watch a movie like Golmaal 1, Bhagambhag or even the likes of Cocktail and Mere Baap Pehle Aap.

Getting to another point, I find the shout and celebration about doing a business of 100 Cr INR very funny. I mean for the movie like Bol Bachchan (What a third class title!), Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2 and others, you raise the ticket price and all then you are expected to get more returns considering the public have been too desperate and interested in watching such movies. All said and done, 100 Crore INR means if on an average 100 is the ticket rate (it would definitely be more than that), then it means that only 1 Crore people were pulled to the screens by that so called greatly entertaining movie. Also, as Aamir Khan once said, if a film makes a 100 Cr. collection doesn't mean its a great film if the audience doesn't enjoy the film. On the other hand, a film made in a budget of say, 30-35 Cr making the collection of 50 Cr. should be called a good film if the reviews of the public as a whole are good. Take an example of Golmaal 3. It had great box-office collections but had bad reviews. Yes, Rohit Shetty is right when he says that at the end of the day he has got 300 Cr. from 3 films but I believe you can't make the fool out of public too often if you don't have good content in the movie. Ram Gopal Verma who once made films like Shiva, Satya and Sarkar but then went on to direct movies like Phoonk, Aag and Phoonk 2 (to name a few) and you can see the effect. Each of movies are failing miserably these days. I hope Rohit Shetty and other filmmakers get on the right track soon or they might have to face the same situation.
