Hints and tips for guitar beginner

Folk rock, rock-a-billy type of stuff.

Were you allowed a guitar in the monastry during those seven years!?:p

Closest thing to a monastry for me would be an Amsterdam coffee shop ;)

For the past month or so, my fingers haven't been getting sore when playing, but now they are again - I thought I was past that bit! Strings are also 'buzzing' more - are these two things a sign of strings in need of changing? I've had the guitar for two months and the strings haven't been changed as yet.
Also, how much of a guitar's sound is down to the strings, and how much to the way the guitar itself is made?

Bearing this in mind, can anyone suggest affordable strings I could look at that will last a decent amount of time?

Normally when you buy a new guitar you want to change the strings right away. The factory strings are all crap so thats probably why they are buzzing now.

Ernie Ball acoustic strings have a very crisp sound and are very cheap. Their electric strings are even better.

As for the sound, let just say a good guitar can sound like crap with bad strings. A bad guitar will sound like crap no matter what.

My guitar was ?60 (down from ?80), so while not the best guitar in the world, it must still be pretty decent for that price? It was the cheapest full size guitar they had, so that's why I got it, as well as liking the sound when they demoed it for me. Either way, maybe I'll get a nice surprise when I change the strings.

Anyway, my playing's coming along nicely now, but that F Chord isn't slipping into muscle memory just yet. Next lesson on Thursday - am looking forwards to being given new stuff to practice.

Edit: Do you know how much I'd expect to spend for those strings?

Your guitar is fine, usually the low end electrics are the ones to worry about because of crappy pickups. Just change the strings and make sure to tune it often. After you change the strings they will go out of tune quickly for the first few days. Just be sure to string it properly :p

Any luck with recordings?

Not yet - I'm going to save up for a decent camera phone, that should do the job (do you really want to see me play guitar? I'm not at that level just yet). As for the strings, the shop's doing it for me - I'm not going anywhere near that until someone shows me how to do it (face to face, not via a video).

Edit: I'm looking forwards to hearing how my guitar sounds with proper strings!

I just think with recordings it more fun and more motivation to learn. Plus that way its easier to give/receive advice when other people can actually see what you are doing.

Hows piano coming along?

Haven't been playing much recently because I was focused on today's drama school audition (didn't get a recall again). Haven't got another one until mid March, so I'll be able to get back into it a bit.

it sucks doesnt it ? when you just keep on giving auditions and dont even hear from them again. :doh

although, sometimes you know you've done a crappy job when you choked or just werent feeling it.....:p

@Masterblaster76 - I'd recommend changing them once a month, Ernie Ball strings are pretty decent, I can't remember the name of the ones I have but they're even better, they have coloured tips so you know which string is which if that helps you when you go to buy some.

As for the buzzing, yep, sure-fire way of knowing its time to change the strings generally. Its generally when theres a build-up of fine dirt in the strings, the other way is to smell your fingers after playing, if you don't like it, then thats another way of knowing.
