I presume this is going to be cut-down to a smaller number at some point.

New guys

Samit Patel, Batting all-rounder from Notts, bowls decent SLA, not a front line bowler, a bit like Blackwell, but a better bowler, I'd say.

Darren Pattinson, Bowler for Notts, done very well this season, born in Grimsby, grew up in Melbourne.

Simon Jones, back into an England squad for the first time in 3 years.

kool, Simon is back gor England, YAY Flintoff, who hates to play in Pakistan ;P.

Fair chance, good squad.

Hmm real surprise to see Pattinson in there. Patel been really impressive this season with bat and ball and deserves his place. I'll be interested to see you'll be left standing when the squad is reduced a bit later.

I'm a little surprised that Adil Rashid wasn't included in this 30 man squad since he has been playing for the England Lions for a while now and Pakistan would be a decent place to give him a go, there are I suppose quite a few spinners in the side but I would still include him since he has played for the Lions for good period of time.

50-50 or Asia Cup in Pakistan is not pulling the crowds, its totally flop, even India-Pakistan matches are not drawing crowds, its not full house, and other matches hardly we see 5-150 people,Pakistan will not benifit much from this Asia Cup.
Another main concern for Mini World Cup (Camp League) is security, i guess they have kept South Africa if there are security problems, even if its in pakistan, it will not be much profitable to them or ICC,had it been in India it would have been a success...

Patel is a very good FC batsmen but I'm still not that sure of him in ODI's. I'm guessing Matt Prior is in because he can bat too. What annoys me is the lack of Trott. H'es the best OD batsmen in English domestic cricket. He should be in the final squad, not just the 30 man squad.

Good point on Trott. Don't know why he wasn't given another chance since all he had was 2 Twenty20's against the West Indies and wasn't selected for the ODI's. He's someone who can score hundreds, which England batsmen currently don't have.

Glad to see the likes of Patel, Key, Bresnan, Jones, Flintoff, Mustard, Mahmood, Joyce, Onions and Prior in. Bresnan's been fantastic this season for Yorkshire, as has Mahmood. I don't think Saj has the consistency to make it at international level yet, although he has show some certain development in the past 2 seasons.

Also, I'm not sure where you get this belief that Trott is the best domestic OD batsman. He's quite a way down the list in terms of most runs in the FP Trophy this season, he may be averaging 50 but that is helped by an unbeaten 100. He also only has 1 hundred and 1 fifty to his name, whereas Bopara has a hundred and 3 fifties, converting his 100 into a double. There's no doubting that he's been in good touch, and should probably be in the side, but there have been far more impressive players in domestic OD cricket this season. Andrew Strauss has more runs than Trott and has played 2 less innings.

It isn't just about form from this season it's about the fact he averages 41 for his career. Tell me another player that's been able to do that. No-one apart from KP and he's playing for England now. People are having good seasons, but Trott is consistently scoring runs season after season and is a proven class OD batsmen not just in good form. The only other player with an average that good is Graeme Hick, and he's had a better ODI career than most of our batsmen anyway.

Wow, thats a very good point, the only 7 English batsmen averaging over 40 over their whole career are Pietersen, Hick, Gooch, Fairbrother, Chris Adams, Chris Smith and Trott. He's in quite a prestigious group there. Maybe he should be given a chance after all :p. Very surprised the selectors haven't included him, the 2 T20i's aren't exactly a great look at the guys skill level. He should definitely be in the squad.

There is still a big jump from domestic OD to international OD games. From that list neither Smith or Adams took it to the next level.

Having said that though, I like Trott, I think he is a very good batsman. But our ODI middle order isn't too open. KP, Colly and Shah wouldn't be displaced by Trott. Maybe he could come in for Ravi?

@ Kp's list. It is quite amazing to think that of the 7 batsmen averaging over 40 only 3 are born in England :p Shows there is obviously something wrogn with the way we do OD cricket over here!

I think Ravi has the same problem as Bell now because he has the ability, we know that and if he isn't in the England side he will be scoring runs for fun but he can't do it at international level. I think the difference for Bopara is that he has been mucked around a bit and hasn't hit a century yet, if he finds a spot and gets settled then maybe he can transfer his form to ODI's. I am more worried about Bell.

I wouldn't drop anyone but Trott would definitely be my next in line for the side. Personally I don't think we pick the best OD players though and Trott sums it up. Guys like Benning, Jefferson and Trott all perform better in the shorter form so don't get the same chance. When KP came into the side some expected him to be an ODI specialist for a couple of years at the least and look at him now.

I wonder why England don't go back to G. Jones...

I forget what he did to get dropped... Other than drop a bizillion catches :p

But then again, every England keeper has done that for sometime now..

He wasn't dropped for his inability to catch, which he ironed out and is now one of the better keepers in the country. He was dropped because his batting was so poor.

I think I am not even going to follow the scores for this tournament (since its played in Pakistan where the pitches have been pathetic). Plus 50 over cricket for me is losing the sheen after T20's.

Yes,we have seen in the Asia Cup too- Teams have easily chased down 300+ totals. And Karachi and Lahore would definately be the venues for the same here.
