India will be without star batsman Sachin Tendulkar for the ICC Champions Trophy
Rohan Gavaskar will replace the Bombay Blaster in the squad. India?s cricket selectors on Monday picked a full-strength team for the Champions Trophy after reaching an agreement with top players over sponsorship contracts.
Captain Sourav Ganguly will lead the 14-man squad for the limited-overs tournament starting in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo on Thursday, officials said. ?The problem has been sorted out with the players and the International Cricket Council (ICC). We will go to Colombo with our best team,? Indian cricket chief Jagmohan Dalmiya told reporters. The decision was arrived after a day of hectic consultations between the ICC and Dalmiya, which culminated with a tele-conference with officials of the other 11 participating nations. The Indian players had initially refused to sign sponsorship contracts that prevented them from endorsing products which conflicted with the official sponsors for 30 days after the event. The ICC, however, agreed the contracts will be valid only for 16 days after the tournament ends on September 29.
Despite recent poor performances, India are one of the main competitors for the trophy
The Board of Control for Cricket in India okayed the pact when the ICC said any ?claims made by official sponsors will be borne by the ICC?, Dalmiya said.
India?s Champions Trophy squad: Sourav Ganguly (capt), Rahul Dravid (vice-capt), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Dinesh Mongia, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Venkatsai Laxman, Jai Prakash Yadav, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh.
