England, Pakistan and South Africa call up replacements for ICC Champions Trophy

Glamorgan's Alex Wharf has replaced Kabir Ali in England's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

Kabir has failed to recover from a side strain and the International Cricket Council's technical committee has approved the change.

Wharf made a sparkling debut against India, picking up three wickets in the first match and helped England beat India 2-1 in the NatWest Challenge.

England play their opening Champions Trophy match against Zimbabwe at Edgbaston on Friday.

An application to include Wharf in the squad was made after Kabir was examined by Dr Peter Gregory, the England and Wales Cricket Board's chief medical advisor.

"Kabir is likely to be out of action for a further three weeks," an ECB spokesman told BBC Sport.

Requests by England, Pakistan and South Africa to call up replacements for injured players have been approved by the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2004.

England seam bowler Kabir Ali has been replaced by Alex Wharf, who has deputised for him in the current NatWest series against India, while Surrey all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been drafted into the Pakistan squad in place of injured pace bowler Shabbir Ahmed. Another pace bowler, Andre Nel, has been forced to withdraw from South Africa's squad and has been replaced by Boland quick bowler Charl Langeveldt, who has played 7 one day internationals.

Grounds for countries seeking player replacements are classified as either medical - injury or illness - or exceptional. Once a player has been replaced in a squad he can take no further part in the tournament.

The Event Technical Committee for the ICC Champions Trophy 2004 comprises of:

  • David Richardson, ICC General Manager-Cricket (or his nominee), as Chairman
  • David Clarke, ECB Host Tournament Director
  • Campbell Jamieson, IDI Commercial Manager, IDI representative
  • John Carr, ECB Director of Cricket, ECB representative
  • Sunil Gavaskar, independent IDI nominee
  • Michael Holding, independent IDI nominee
