Hamid Hassan could've been something special if he hadn't got badly injured, and Afghanistan at that time didn't really have a good medical team.

Are you fine? Didn't see you post a wager for the SA BAN game. All ok?

Sri Lanka look in absolute shambles! It does not help when your captain talks things like "with the kind of limited talent we have, we have to give it our best" (read this in an interview of his that he gave after the loss to NZ in their first game of this tournament).

Something is just so wrong with their system that they are immune to humiliation and they don't feel the pain of it. This was brought up by Malinga after their loss to NZ but I guess its going to take time to shake it off.

To be fair, Ranatunga has always maintained the same about the 96 team that won the world cup - it was on cricbuzz recently as well, that the team he had was not the most talented team but they had immense passion and heart and team spirit to win the world cup

But yes, SL look in absolute shambles indeed. They never came into the series as a contender for the first time since 1999 and are not expected to make the semi finals. They are getting outplayed in every department - be it batting, bowling or fielding

I think India should go in with all 3 seamers for tomorrow and have Jadeja play as the 7th batsman instead of Kedar Jadhav. I know Jadhav is a more specialist batsman than Jadeja but Jadeja is coming in with some very good batting form from the two warm up games and he gives a solid 6th bowling option where he can bowl 10 overs. And add in his tremendous fielding where there is almost none in India to challenge him there. My XI for tomorrow would be this:

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Rahul
Dhoni
Hardik
Jadeja
Kumar
Shami
Chahal
Bumrah

Picking Chahal over Kuldeep because Jadeja is already a left arm spinner and so having a right arm leggie would be adding variety and also Chahal has been in better form than Kuldeep in the last few months (i.e. IPL and the warmups).

That was 1996 when Sri Lanka were almost at the level of minnows and so what Ranatunga says about that team ("a team with limited talent") could make sense. However Sri Lanka since that 1996 WC win, have grown leaps and bounds as a cricketing nation and have been one of the top teams in international cricket until the last 4-5 years

I am conflicted about leaving out Kuldeep ... on his day he will win you the game by breaking the opposition's batting lineup. But he has been in mediocre form off late as well.

Conditions are expected to be overcast and chilly, so including Bhuvi could definitely be a good idea

Lets all of us pray and hope that the dumb-a$$ management judges the conditions and the wicket correctly at the beginning of a tournament and picks the right team for a change

The reason Sri Lanka is in this mess today is also because of some of their management staff and legends. You can pick up any World Cup winning nation of the past or those (ENG, SA, NZ) from the past decade and you will see that they have developed cricketers in advance in anticipation of a transitory phase. The other team that made this same error was the West Indies of the 90's and I actually remember telling one of my friends that this was going to happen. Obviously, no one expected them to drop to the magnitude they have. Jayawardene, Dilshan & Sangakkara played way too many dead rubbers in Sri Lanka itself. And this comes from a die hard Sanga fan who would be in my world all time XI!

The other part of the error from their side has come from them horribly managing the likes of Thirimanne and Chandimal who they touted as the next Jaya and Sanga. At one point, they became indispensable when they had burnt the rope completely and now they have over compromised and drop them every now and then.

Just sighting a small example- Look at their management of Matthews and Malinga in the past two-three years, and you will know all you need to about Sri Lanka cricket.

I also had the same conflict in my mind about Kuldeep. But as I mentioned those points in my previous post, Chahal makes a better bet if Jadeja is picked and also Chahal's form has been better. Kuldeep should come into picture as the tournament progresses.

Very honestly speaking, I am leaving one of the wrist spinners out, playing Jadeja and 3 quicks with one wrist spinner as well as Pandya. No Jadhav/Shankar.

Dhawan
Rohit
Rahul/Kohli
Dhoni
Pandya
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Shami
Bumrah
Chahal

The Afghanis are really losing the plot here. What was supposed to be a simple chase is slowly going away from them...

This is really poor cricket from Afghanistand and really good bowling from Sri Lanka. Poking at deliveries outside and losing wickets.

Yes, it is not a difficult target and not a difficult pitch and not a difficult attack

Ideal chance for AFG to make a mark .. but .. will they

I also believe Lanka is not out of this because the ball is definitely doing something. Perhaps another reason why Nabi's performance should be appreciated as one of the better performances not just in this but all over the history of the world cup!
