English cricket continues to be run like an amateur sport largely. Anyone would have sense to get full ground covers in case of rain. You cannot treat a WC fixture the way you treat county games. You either treat it seriously or have no business hosting it. SL, a tropical island for God's sake manages to pull off games during monsoon every single year. They definitely do not have more money than the ECB. They do care about every game of cricket though! Kolkata has full-sized covers and so does Mirpur these days. Buying covers for the whole ground is something that can be done even now. If only they cared. This is the last of my rants. I don`t give a damn about the rest of the WC now. If games happen, I will follow it like any other tournament. The reason all of us care about the WC is not only for the parochial joy of following our side. Somewhere deep down, we want the WC to capture the imagination of the non-cricket followers the way only global events do. First, we had the 10-team format and then this fiasco. It makes our sport look so much worse.

I had asked in the middle of April what the status on reserve days was. One of the year's the CT final was about to be ruined because of this.

Everyone of us crying foul right now (rightfully so) on washed out games needs to realise that nothing can be done now. Teams have already suffered wash outs and it's impossible to replay those games.

What I don't understand is that the ICC didn't have a contingency plan for this. A fan like me saw this coming, but they didn't? Hard to believe.

I can imagine the uproar if Indo-Pak is abandoned. What this has done is basically turned people off 50 over cricket. People will still come for tests and t20's but they might choose to veer away from this format.

I consider Zak as one of the best pundits of the modern day and he said that it's not the rain that's caused the abandonment but the lack of covers. He thinks we could have had a 40 over encounter with ease and that we should be monitoring not just the Indo-Pak clash on 16th but the weather preceding that day as well.

That CT final was the one of 2013. What was more farcical was the fact that the final of the CT in 2013 did not have a reserve day. It was only when the ICC extended the cutoff time for the game that we had a 20-over game that day. Does anyone want to hazard a guess as to why we did not have a reserve day for that final? It was because ENG was playing NZ in a meaningless bilateral T20 the following day! To make it worse, the ENG-NZ T20 did happen in clear conditions and hardly anyone from the CT final side was part of that contest. The ICC and the ECB are morons.

Only last year, FIFA pre-emptively moved the U17-WC final from Guwahati to Kolkata within a 3-day window due to heavy rains. That for an age-group tournament. Crowds for that game were 60k+! If we were to have a situation where we know of a cyclone hitting the semis/final venue of the CWC 3 days in advance, all that the ICC would do is sit back and wait for the inevitable to happen and then share points.

Yeah, I am aware of these things apart from the NZ ENG T20 bilateral. May be, I am a purist and exception but a shortened T20 also isn't fair. I think they both are separate formats with requirements for different disciplines.

For instance- If the final of this World Cup is between AUS & WI, AUS would start fav but if it's a T20 after rain, WI become fav. How's it a 50 over WC then?

The CT final of 2013 was on 23rd June while ENG-NZ contested in a T20 on 25th!

Hi people, Wasn't around here for some days. I want to put some cents here regarding World Cup and recent matches. I believe that this World Cup has the most competitive format and teams for more than a decade of World Cup history but thus far rain is taking the competitiveness away a bit too far. When the top teams failed to compete with each other back and forth due to rain, disappointment does occur and then luck plays its major part rather than team performances. I don't support a roof technology or indoor stadiums here, I believe Rain in ODI especially add beauty and value to the Cricket but back to back entire washouts and that too of crunch games which can play a major part ahead in the tournament isn't a too feel-good sign for the audience and teams as well.

I don't support the reserve days for crucial matches either that will stretch the already long tournament and not the way to work for pool matches. However, I feel ICC and boards should build a consensus to have the World Cup Tournament in the period of normal weather conditions. This seems an extreme weather situation where rain is scaring people coming to see matches. I heard there are rain forecasts for semi-finals and finals even. Not Happy.

Today was a big game of Newzeland against India, got all in vain without any competition between the two top teams.

Now I'd love to talk about Yesterday match between Pakistan and Australia. Most of my friends here must have remembered that I was among ones who voiced the opinions strongly that Malik and Hafeez in same batting lineup is a huge gamble. You can't rely on Babar Azam every other day, He is a human being, not a run making machine. He gave a great start yesterday but fell short in an attempt to pull a shot which deserved to be pulled. I can remember in 1999 World Cup, Inzamam played a very similar shot against Damien Fleming in the pool match with Bill Lawry voicing his classic commentary for that shot and it went for a boundary level six so I won't blame Babar here. My point was that Fakhar Zaman is already not a consistent aggressor off-late, you don't have a third specialist opener, Babar is your number 3 backbone if he gets out early, Would you bank on Hafeez, Malik and Asif each and every day? I guess not, instead of banking, you'd rather be hoping that one of them gets clicks. That's not the right strategy. You don't win the World Cup with a bunch of part-time batsmen/bowlers in middle order every other day.

I believe Haris Sohail should be the part of the squad in every match, He can bowl 3 to 4 overs like Malik, I know Malik is better with his spin, however, Haris gives you solid base and trust in the middle order. Had Haris be in yesterday match coming in such a crucial stage, Most likely Australia would have been struggling to get him out. He is your proper specialist middle-order batsman.

Pakistan made a huge blunder not picking up Shadab that was the talk of the town yesterday. The team needs a balanced selection and have to be professional in fielding. Literally, teams don't deserve victory with such bad fielding and child's play batting which Pakistan showed.

Inzy made a bad call picking sluggish opener Imam alongside risky Fakhar, boy we've had a major flaw in opening pair. I'd put more onus on sluggish Imam and less reliable Hafeez in yesterday loss than any other else. Bowling was sloppy as well by Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi.

Coming to India vs Pakistan, at present looking at vibe and situation, Pakistan is looking towards the losing end, but you never say never when Pakistan is playing, that's how they have been operating over the decades. Aamir, Shadab, Babar, and Shadab would be keys for Pakistan. All Pakistan needs is 3 good balls to destruct the top 3 of Indian batting lineup and game will be very much on :) Let's see IF Rain doesnt come into play.

People will hoot around about the Pakistan batting, but it is their bowling up to this point that's winning them this game so far. The two left armers have been OUTSTANDING.

I believed Morgan missed a trick not bowling Rashid earlier because Zaman's dismissal made it evident that there was grip and turn in the wicket. Shadab and those two offies will be hard to plug.

I would honestly bowl Malik and Hafeez in random here and not be of the mindset to bowl them just 10.

It wouldn't have been bad idea for Morgan to bowl Root a few here as well..

:D

Hopefully Jason Roy’s okay and it wasn’t a serious injury. Would be a huge miss for both England and the World Cup if he’s injured.

Some real stupid show by Andre Russell today. I mean your team is 5 wickets down for just 160 odd and with 16 overs to go, you go for a blind slog. Come on there was no basic Cricket sense being showed by him !!! :facepalm

And he continued to go for it and eventually go out. Even tail-enders don't do this sort of stuff these days :noway

It's high time that the players realise that Cricket should be played like Cricket and not like Baseball where you try to hit every ball out of the park !!!![DOUBLEPOST=1560515139][/DOUBLEPOST]Oh dear !!!! The English Captain in some real pain over here. Already lost Jason Roy earlier today. Hope he is fine :(

Looking at Roy's injury I don't think he would play any games now for this WC. But we never know :spy

A bit of Afridi from Russell. Manchester has 60% chance of rain this Sunday

To me it looked like he had an hamstring injury. So it does seem it is serious.[DOUBLEPOST=1560515421][/DOUBLEPOST]What a collapse from the Windies !!!!
