ICC Under-19 World Cup (South Africa)

A 13 Ball Half-century from the SA Opener - Steve Stolk.

Some of the quality of the talent is quite impressive in this tournament.

Just seen how silly the tournament format is, smdh

Instead of advancing to eight team knockouts, twelve teams are split into two groups - but only four out of those twelve teams advance to the next round (semis), just as many as there would have been had they gone with a simple knockouts format.

Why did they change format is beyond me.

The format from 2008 to 2018 (not sure about 2020) was perfect.

16 teams into 4 groups , Top 2 from each group advanced to make it a simple Quarter, semis and final.

Riding on top of what @Na Maloom Afraad mentioned, this Super 6 stage is becoming quite difficult to decipher.

For starters, there are 12 teams, not 6. The teams are divided into Groups of 6, but will only play 2 games. Can someone also explain whether the original points are going to carry forth?

It seems like an unnecessarily complicated stage for something as simple as an U-19 CWC. The KO stage was the best cause the other knocked out teams too, got an opportunity to play and hone their skills. This is beyond disastrous. God only knows what they will come up with for the next edition of the main World Cup in 2027!

It's actually a good format and if you perform well during your initial group matches then you only have to win 1 match out of the 2 during super sixes to qualify for the semi finals , otherwise if you performed badly during your initial group matches then you have to win both of your super six matches in order to qualify for semi final, Simple and rewarding.

How is it a good format? Cricket World Cup formats have always been shady. I am not considering the pre-1992 ones as the number of teams were less. In my opinion, a World Cup should always have aa round robin, followed by the Knockouts.

The problem with longer 2nd stages means that teams who haven't done so well, may end up getting to the finals by virtue of winning a solitary game/ at the behest of someone else. There is little skill involved, rather it is left to the pitiful form of other teams that may prop you up.
