India, not what they used to be?

We also beat the Aussies in ODIs and tied the tests. :sarcasm and the lankans. And England (although iirc we lost the 7match series 4-3). We have been among the top 3 teams consistently over the past 5 years.

I only said what I said, as surendar's examples were 2 of the weakest non-minnow sides.

Had he posted this, my post would obviously have been different.

India may go through a transition period after the retirement of certain big names of our lineup, but tbh, I'm not so worried about it. It's not that there is any lack of talent in the country. We have players like Raina, Kohli and all who are good enough for the international level. Just that they are still a bit raw, and need some more scrubbing before we can say that they are capable of carrying a team on their shoulders. Hopefully, we'll see that taking place before our star cricketers hang up their boots, which will require some more years to happen anyway.

I definitely do not believe that India's Batting will be going down anytime soon.
Just like Australia keeps unearthing talented pace bowlers, India will continue to unearth batsmen. :p

However, one area of concern is the bowling. I find the bowling bench strength relatively poor. I think this might be a problem department for India in the future.

This. The batsmen may need some time to get used to the international scene sometimes, but they'll eventually come good if we stick with them imo. More India A tours in foreign conditions might help them get used to conditions earlier too.

It's not the bowling bench strength that's just poor - sometimes the first choice bowlers look like they have no answers. Besides Zaheer, and Harbhajan(sometimes), it doesn't look great. Zaheer seems to not be the same player after injury, but we'll see. While spin is not a major concern for me, with Mishra, Ojha(think he's the best limited overs spinner) and Ashwin besides Harbhajan - and Piyush, who is talented, but still lacking something - it's the pace bowling that needs to be sorted out. It's crazy how we can't even produce one genuinely quick bowler.

Oh nice, you have won away against probably the two weakest non-minnow sides away from home?

you conveniently forgot that he also pointed out the CB series

I think picking Raina as a captain was a poor choice. I would've gone with KKD personally, captained TN before successfully and has good leadership abilities, has been around for a long time now. Honestly I would've had SOME senior players around, like Zaheer Khan with the ball and perhaps Sehwag or Gambhir or someone with the bat to lead each department. In that case Zak defo would've been my captain.

Raina doesn't have any leadership skills. I sure as hell wouldn't listen to his squeaky voice on the field.

He's the most experienced player on the team, and he's the only one with a permanent place on the national side. I'd pick Kohli as captain over KKD anyday, I have no idea why planetcricket has an obsession with Karthik. He's very mediocre. Raina's the best possible choice, and then Kohli because of his experience and possible future in the position.

Also, it's pretty ridiculous to point out a squeaky voice as the defining characteristic of an unable captain.

With Gambhir, Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, and Yuvraj (who hopefully will find some form), India's future in batting doesn't look bad at all. Sehwag has a good 6 years left, too. India has become a batting powerhouse. Bowling wise, not so much. India's bowling will be horrid once Zaheer Khan leaves, but hopefully someone will fill his shoes in the coming years.

We will find the bowlers to keep us afloat. Our bowling has never been our strong point (even when it was, the spin quartret of Bedi, Chandrasekar, Venkatraghavan ruled during a peak period). When Kapil Dev played, he too didnt have much support. Srinath came much later and even Srinath didnt have support (Prasad was OK, but not the support Srinath deserves). Our bowling looked real good in the '03 WC when Srinath, Zaheer and Nehra were operating in full force. But Srinath retired and Zaheer/Nehra fell frequently to injuries. But still we have managed to win games, win trophies, win tournaments, etc.

It will go on....

if you consider CB series against Aus and SL in Aus as minnow clash then yes you are correct, india played minnows, probably you are correct the last time one of the afromentioned minnow sides NZ played aus in odi series in Aus they beat them like trash and chased 320+ three times.

I totally agree with title but not with post. :p

India is not what it used to be. We have started to win abroad and please stop judging a side from T20 performance or else Pakistan is worlds best side.

And to do all these with crappy bowlers adds to the fun of winning for Indian fans. (It gives us excuse as well)

^Agree with Scion_Sid - what wrong is India doing, 1st ranking in test, might reach it in ODI's too.

They are winning abroad and hasn't lost any series from past 2 years.

If some other team gets to top, we all satisfy ourselves "They're sledging", "Poor umpiring" etc etc.. Now as we're first, they're thinking the same:p:laugh;).

I can't see any other team getting on top till we have this squad we're currently having.

World's best openers
World's best middle order
A good keeper and excellent captain
1/2 good spinner in Ojha and Bhajji - both looks promising, and surely better than what SA, Aus have got.
a great pace bowler in Zaheer
crap supporting bowlers.(though Sreesanth seems to be good):p

After that we have Mithun who is a future pace bowlers, R Vinay Kumar can make it to the squad too. Though Kulkarni hasn't debuted yet, but he is surely a better bet atleast in tests.
