India Team Discussion

Which Iyer are you talking about? V or S?
If V has played T20I matches spanning across the last 12 months, I must be living under the rock :p

Coming to the team, the fact that KLR is tagged as a VC for Tests and C for T20Is it's a no brainer that Dravid and Co have decided the way forward once Rohit hangs up his boots. If I were S.Iyer, I wouldn't harbour hopes of Indian captaincy any time soon (unless KRL fails miserably at the job)

The unfortunate aspect here is that KLR and Pant are being groomed for captaincy. In the recent IPL, they were, perhaps the worst of the lot- Agreed , their teams waltzed through to respectable positions, but the fact remains that these 2 should be no where near the captain's blazer. I hope for the betterment of Indian cricket that we are whitewashed once again.

Hardik seemed to be being groomed in the T20 series v England a while back. He, alongside Rohit, was Kohli's go to man.

Seems like we have someone or the other performing well every series, so I might have different versions of India's T20I side that would keep in changing from time to time. Let me have the first version of it. Assuming we can have 17 players

Rohit Sharma :c: (don't move him at all!)
KL Rahul :bat:/:wkb: (can keep if Pant isn't available)
Virat Kohli:bat:
Suryakumar Yadav :bat:
Rishabh Pant :wkb:
Ravindra Jadeja :ar:
Venkatesh Iyer :ar:
Deepak Chahar :bwl:
Mohammed Siraj :bwl:
Jasprit Bumrah :bwl:
Yuzvendra Chahal :bwl:

Shreyas Iyer :bat: (direct replacement for SKY)
Ruturaj Gaikwad :bat:
Mohammed Shami :bwl:
Ravi Bishnoi :bwl: (replace with Chahal)
Bhuvneshwar Kumar :bwl: ( replacement for 2nd pacer)
Ishan Kishan :bat:/:wkb: (if KLR doesn't make the team) (can also play in the middle order) (can replace Pant as keeper)

Back-ups
Washington Sundar :ar:
Avesh Khan :bwl:
Kuldeep Yadav :bwl:
Sanju Samson :bat:/:wkb:
Shikhar Dhawan :bat:
So we finally have a version 2 (15 for now)-
  1. Rohit Sharma :c::bat:
  2. KL Rahul v/:c: :bat:/:wkb:
  3. Virat Kohli :bat:
  4. Suryakumar Yadav :bat:
  5. Hardik Pandya :ar: (will be the 6th bowler)
  6. Ravindra Jadeja :ar: (2nd spinner and 5th bowler)
  7. Dinesh Karthik :wkb: (will mostly bat ahead of Jadeja unless there are more than 6-7 overs remaining)
  8. Bhuvneshwar Kumar :bwl:
  9. Mohammed Shami :bwl:
  10. Jasprit Bumrah :bwl:
  11. Yuzvendra Chahal :bwl:
Back-Ups

Ishan Kishan :bat:/:wkb: (Opener)
Kuldeep Yadav :bwl:
Deepak Chahar :bwl:
Rishabh Pant :wkb:

This is pretty much the squad we had for our last T20 WC with just DK's addition and couple of role changes.

Reserves:
Sanju Samson :bat:/:wkb:
Washington Sundar :ar:
Harshal Patel :bwl:

There’s more chances of my nan being the Indian skipper before Kohli and she’s dead.

As I said, arguable.. but if suddenly all the names above him get diarrhoea suddenly and the next match is scheduled for tomorrow. I am pretty sure Virat will step up in this situation.

Rohit missing out on all the important series (against top teams) as the national team captain but available for series against considerably weaker teams is all but coincidence.

This is how we "Groom" our future captains. Just ask them to lead in the absence of the regular captain.

I've said this before, Rohit is not a wise choice for the captaincy. He will miss out on atleast 50% of the series this way in a year. Injuries, form, rest, age and other things....

Rohit is not a wise choice for the captaincy.
Let us ask MSD to come out of retirement and Captain India then. :lol

If Rohit is not a wise choice then who would you reckon to take the baton? KL Rahul who lacks confidence to lead or Rishabh Pant who doesn't even play like a shadow of himself when he Captains the side? Even if we talk about Shreyas Iyer, he looks like losing his spot soon.

The fact is the selectors never even considered grooming someone under Kohli and this is why you see this situation right now. Rohit Sharma was the vice-Captain + the best successful white-ball Captain in India, so he obviously becomes the first choice until we find someone.

Yeah, we have that option if he is ready.

If Rohit is not a wise choice then who would you reckon to take the baton?
First of all, why would you transfer the captaincy to a player who is not even playing half of the games? Though Kohli's captaincy is arguable, he did play most of the games. And he was removed hoping that Rohit would do full time.

Have you groomed these 'future' captains? There were handed over the captaincy out of blue. Players tend to get nervous while representing the national team and captaincy is very big responsibility which cannot be given overnight with a few exceptions.

Whose fault it is then? Management? Why wouldn't they groom players and just removed Kohli from captaincy before grooming someone? They never had plans to groom someone but to transfer it to Rohit at some point.

With that Logic, even Pant should've done decent for India after turning fortunes for old Delhi Capitals. We haven't really seen 'Rohit Sharma the captain' against strong teams yet. Ofcourse we have seen him win consecutive games against the teams like West Indies, Srilanka and most of them being home games.

They wanted Kohli to continue as T20I Captain so that we don't have different Captains in white-ball but he turned down the offer. IMO this approach of having the same Captain should change but BCCI doesn't seem to keen on doing it.

Captaining an IPL franchise gives a player the experience of Captaincy and other than that there are India A games. You can see that only the ones who Captained in these matches are given the responsibility.

Loss in CT'17 Finals and RCB's failures in IPL were enough to take the Captaincy away from Kohli and hand it over to Rohit but they stuck with Kohli. So this wasn't planned.

Not Pant, it was Shreyas Iyer. He was the one who backed the youngsters and pushed the forward to perform and give their best which in turn helped their confidence. Under Rishabh Pant, DC made blunders at pressure situations. And this guy just cluelessly watched things unfold standing behind the wickets.

3 wins in 3 games against Pakistan in UAE(a place where they hardly lost anything) and eventually winning the Asia Cup title in 2018 showed signs of enough dominance plus his IPL stints.

Blame Rohit for losing his shape and injuring himself in NZ, 2020 IPL and South Africa tour last year but Covid-19 isn't under his control. But I don't think his Captaincy lacked anything. He actually uses his players wisely.

And who is 'they'? From what I have read and Kohli himself said that he was never asked to stay. His decision was taken 'positively' by the management. If they were so keen to have him continue, they wouldn't have accepted it in first place.

MS Dhoni?

Yeah, people go blind when he made India no.1 test team. They go blind when he betters captaincy records ahead of the likes of Dhoni and Ganguly. People don't remember him winning 7 out of 9 world cup matches. People don't remember anything at all. He is the worst captain India has ever seen. Just because he has not won a damn ICC/IPL trophy. Even Dravid, Ganguly didn't as the captain.

Okay, let's say Shreyas Iyer. By that logic, Shreyas should be the captain of national team now? Because he did great in IPL team captaincy?

India played 2 matches against Pakistan not 3. And the Asia Cup had Afghanistan, Hong kong and Bangladesh too. Being a host team, Pakistan not making it to the finals shows how good they were at that time. Compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges. And IPL stint? This is the only justification Rohit fans give to people. He won 5 titles blah blah blah... If IPL was a decider, why would players like Gaikwad, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, and many others fail in international Circuit? I know individual performance is different from captaincy. But IPL is not everything is my point here

In other words, 'careless'. With such a huge responsibility, if you are not able to take care of yourself, how would you lead the national team?

I'm being harsh here but that is what it is. If India cannot move on from Kohli and Rohit and struggle under Pant or Rahul, what future do we as India have? Rohit is 35, which means 2-3 yrs of cricket left which will fade away as he ages. Same goes with Kohli. And Rohit to miss out half of the games in that period for sure. As usual, prone to injuries.
