India Team Discussion

Can Rohit play the next world cup he gonna be 40 and he don't care what anyone says he loves playing world cup cricket
2026 or 2027? I find it increasingly difficult that he will play tbh. The only time he may be asked to reconsider ODIs is if India fail to zero in on a proper successor to Rohit. That said, still doubt. They wouldn't want to carry anyone for that long, as these guys would pick and choose and might imbalance the apple cart.

Shreyas Iyer has to be the next ODI captain with Shubman Gill as his understudy. Maybe after CT 2025. Anyone but Rishabh Pant. I don't rate his captaincy at all.

You are forgetting KLR! The selectors might have him on their radar. With the triple retirements (albeit from T20) he become an important cog in the wheel here.

I will never watch another India game if KL Rahul will be the captain. He is the opposite of what a leader should be. Pure negative mindset

I feel Hardik will lead the T20 side, Bumrah the test side and Shreyas/Hardik the ODI side.

I for one, am keen on knowing the make of the T20 side. How does the new management shape this side now? After losing 3 mainstays - Rohit, Kohli and Jadeja, what sort of players would you get in to replace them?

1. Hard Hitting opener, grafting middle order batsman and a bowling AR
2. Hard hitting floaters + batting AR
3. All Hard Hitting floaters

I feel you have a like for like replacement for Kohli in Gill/ Iyer, as they are of the same mould. Grafting batsmen who can play from 3-5 positions. Does the team need a grafter/ anchor is the questions. I do feel yes, but the batting style needs to be more radical. Unlike the Kohli final innings we saw, that is. Gill nd Iyer, both have the tendency to rescue the side and up the strike rate as and when required.

The hard hitting batsman is one where we might have some difficulty. At present, the only names that come to mind are Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Sharma.

As for the Jadeja replacement, Axar has made himself a tad indispensable post this WT20, but I would still like to see someone like a Sundar in the squad here.

Shreyas should be kept away from the T20I team with a ten feet pole. You can’t be critical of Kohli and then nominate Shreyas ‘Radical’ Iyer as his replacement when the latter has a worse career strike rate than Kohli in both domestic and international T20s.

They should go back to the team that worked well for the bilaterals with Gill and Jaiswal opening while Gaikwad bats at three. I wouldn’t mind swapping Gill and Gaikwad around too. Integrate Abhishek into the team in the meantime and see if he can step up (I think he can). Shaw is another one that should be kept out of the international setup until he cleans his act up, you will be the first one cursing him for throwing away his wicket all the time and fielding like a cricketer from the 1950s.

Washi should get another chance, I agree. We should be playing him and Axar both, they offer more flexibility than two SLAs. The next T20 WC is in the subcontinent so there isn’t any worry over having 2-3 spinners in the XI.

Bring Rinku back for Dube. Let Gaikwad further hone his keeping skills and see if he can keep wickets in T20Is. If he doesn’t then we may be forced to go back to Pant/Samson.

Jaiswal
Gill
Gaikwad
SKY
Hardik
Rinku
Axar
Washi
Kuldeep/Third seamer
Bumrah
Arshdeep

Abhishek, Pant/Samson/New Keeper, Third Seamer, Dube (ugh)/Wildcard new batter

I reckon that’s a decent XI to defend our title in a couple of years. Praise be to Dravid, he has set us up well in this format for continued success on paper.

That's a good side tbh! The reason for looking at Iyer/ Gill was predominantly on account of having a radical batsman in the side. Iyer is definitely quicker in terms of scoring than VK, hence the mention.

What I would like to see them do is to bring up a few more seamers. The pace battery has been good, but needs to be developed further.

You want Gaikwad to keep? And has everyone forgotten about Tilak Verma? Maybe not for 2026 but after SKY's retirement, this guys needs to be in the side ASAP.

Axar and Sundar are very one dimensional with the ball. I think India should look at someone else. Varun Chakravarthy also needs to be reintegrated. He's the perfect second spinner with all his variations. I hope Chahal won't continue getting picked and he was here just because we needed more experienced spinner.

What concerns me is we need to focus back on third fast bowler. Siraj while is good he is 50/50. Avesh Khan was horrible for the time he played, Umran Malik? What other options we have? We will always find good 1-7 but that additional pacer is a key not just in T20 but also Tests.

Gaikwad has kept for Maharashtra before. He still needs some experience but we do have a history of getting by with part-time keepers in our white ball teams. We don’t have a strong alternative at present anyways, Samson doesn’t seem to be in favour for some reason and Pant still needs time to work out his game if he is to be the number three batter. It is a big risk though, I agree.

Sundar is a powerplay specialist and Axar’s capable of bowling there and also in the middle overs. The bigger utility is in them being capable batters, if we can get eight to ten overs out of those two and Hardik then that will be fine on most days. Chakravarthy is a liability in the field and is a bunny with the bat too. At best I can see him in Chahal’s current place and I have no idea why the latter was selected in the first place either.

Harshit Rana and Mayank Yadav are probably the next options worth trying. Yash Thakur if he has a breakout season is another one. Natarajan was unlucky to miss out this time and if fit will always be in the plans. If Kaverappa finds a better IPL franchise next season then I can see him breaking through too. I’m probably missing several other players here that had their moments in the IPL.

Someone who can be an all-format pacer is a lot trickier I would imagine. Weirdly enough… my dark horse pick would be Tushar Deshpande. He’s got pace, experience with India A, a solid domestic record and was only missing a decent IPL season which he managed last time around. I’m surprised he hasn’t played a token game for India already. The other name is our most recent test debutant in Akash Deep. He looked lively on debut and should be in contention for a spot for the tour down under later this year.
