I have been thinking that India slowly need to have a shift in mentality towards picking teams for their limited overs formats. With the limited overs game very quickly shifting towards big muscles and consistent six hitting, India need to have the players who fit that profile. It should not be a drastic change for sure (that won't serve anything), but gradually the mentality should shift where we pack our batting with players who can consistently clear the boundary and that too by a long way. And we need to ensure that we have a deep batting order.
This means people like Rahane, Yuvraj, etc. don't fit at all in the current scenario. And I am going to probably be criticized for saying this - Rohit needs to eventually be moved out of that opening spot. What Rohit does is, since he opens, he takes time to start flexing his muscles and that leaves us with quite a lot to do towards the end. Rohit needs to be told - "you have now revived your career by gaining some reputation at the top of the order. Now move back down the order and become the player who can start hitting almost from the word go". If Rohit can't do it, he needs to go. We can't have guys who say "I can only do this, I can only do that". Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana revolutionized ODI batting with the Powerplay hitting in the 96 WC and changed the game. But India have in recent times gone with the mentality of "let's start real slow, we can always make up later". That style will most likely let you down during crucial stages.
We need guys like Yusuf Pathan (not necessarily him), Saurabh Tiwary, etc who are well built and hit big sixes. Raina can hit big sixes, but if he is not getting his form back soon, dump him. I have not seen Manish Pandey being this massive hitter, but he can build upon and turn into a guy like that, it would be great. We need to learn from West Indies and re-model our team for both ODI and T20.
