So, this is an admission from the management and captain that KL Rahul is not a middle order batsman? He did okay in the World Cup to not warrant being dropped at the very least?

These four games are proof enough of how bad this set up is/has been. There is no cricketing logic to having the same captain or coach.

So what do you want? He did ok but he is not a number 4. We do not want ok players, we want good players. It was a good decision by the management to play Shreyas Iyer at no 4, once Hardik is back, I would want him to take Kedar Jadhav's place and the rest of team can remain same.

Rohit Sharma was not an opener, but because MS Dhoni was willing to back him consistently, it turned out okay. Same can be said for Jonny Bairstow of England.

I'm okay with Iyer at 4. He's a leader as well. But, I don't agree about KL not being a 4. He did magnificently at the World Cup in his limited opportunities and the reason I prefer him being in the side is just because of the fact that he has a few more gears as a batter.

Regardless of what both our opinions are, this is either an admission that the management was wrong earlier or that they're wrong now. It cannot be that they were right both times. That's all I'm saying.

Let me just add something here- I think typecasting cricketers and people in general is very narrow minded thinking. I learnt this on this forum last years when I remember very clearly that myself and one more senior member here were calling Bumrah a LOI bowler. Bumrah proved me wrong and how. So, I feel we shouldn't type case anyone. My only focal point of criticism is the constant chop and change and lack of vision and ideas.

I agree partly with this. However I feel KLR is a better middle order bat in T20I's if he has to be used there. It is time to groom someone new for that spot in ODI's. The success KLR had in the WC in the middle order were in games which had great batting pitches and India already had setup a big platform at the top order with the openers and Kohli. KLR was never tested in the middle order in the recent WC when India were in trouble after early strikes and KLR had to come in. This scenario did not happen as KLR had to move up to open after Shikhar left the tournament and until Shikhar stayed, we had pretty shiny batting conditions.

I know typecasting someone is not right, but I feel KLR is better served as an opener in ODI's (backup while Shikhar is still playing). I am still puzzled as to the need for this continuation with Kedar Jadhav. They were pretty quick to dispose off Dinesh Karthik and yet Jadhav gets another chance. I wonder if this is because Vijay Shankar is still not back from his injury.

Again I am not type casting anyone. It should be made clear to KL that he is and will always be an opener. If we did not have enough talent, I would have backed him but Shreyas Iyer needed to get in, if he is consistent going forward, should be our number 4. We have Hardik and Pant at 5 and 6 who can shift gear but what we lacked the most was someone controlling the innings like Kohli does and Iyer gives me that confidence. We need to stop changing peoples role, yes Sharma was not an opener but we did not have anyone knocking the door back then.. we have some one knocking the door. Also I do not see Dhawan lasing much. KL will be opening sooner or later.

We need players in the lineup that will give you confidence, that no matter what we will win you matches like the team of 2011 did barring Yusuf. To me the following has to be our lineup for the next few series and change accordingly if needed based on form.

6. Hardik Pandya/Vijay Shankar

11. Shami

With Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Khaleel Ahmed, Saini, Chahar brothers, Prithvi Shaw all still getting groomed with A tours.

I do not trust Manish Pandey as he is too unpredictable similar to what Manoj Tiwari was back in the days.

Kedar is 34, already very fragile and we are saying that he's a probable at 38? Dhawan is 37, fragile and are we seeing him there over a Rahul?

I find it very dumb to say that we need to keep "Indian cricket on top!" It's absolutely hilarious! This is the time to groom people like Gill and co. Not amass ranking points in that lame ICC table.

We both have the exact same opinion on this. Even if the captain wants more time away from thinking about the World Cup, it is absolutely rubbish that he says "we start preparing for a WC 12 months before the event and not 4 years away". Does he think that the World Cup coming back to India in 2023 makes it easy for us to just prepare 12 months in advance? England started preparing in 2015 for their home World Cup in 2019 and they fittingly took home the title after having become the No. 1 ODI side in the world when the WC started and deservingly won it in the end.

To me, it is an attempt to deflect criticism of not winning an ICC event and then say "oh we have put Indian cricket close to the top".

Right on the point there ! I was so dissapointed to know about it that a player who is full of passion and always wants to win has gone on to say such a thing. It was just ridiculous and an under-statement for this Indian side.

We aren't a team like the West Indies, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or a Pakistan who isn't as professional these days regarding their performance which they used to be in the past. We are a lot more better team than what we have achieved.

To humans? Maybe to West Indies, but that's a bit of a generalisation.
I agree that it is time to move on from him in ODIs, now that the World Cup is done. Maybe keep him for the WT20s in 2020 and 2021

He is done in international cricket. West Indies have a brilliant T20 line up of batters and batters who can also field. He is a proper liability.
