It's been nearly 2 years when he hasn't been that consistent. Only has a couple of centuries against Australia rest he has looked average or completely clueless.

Who thinks that we should have a 5-match series rather than 3-match series for ODIs ? Gone are the days where we used to have those long tours where both teams compete till the last match and made the contest a lot more exciting.[DOUBLEPOST=1565531919][/DOUBLEPOST]India needs to play a bit differently here. They are trying to defend even straight balls for no reason. A little more aggressive batting can put the bowlers under pressure and they won't be bowling as confidently as they are right now.

India won`t win big tournaments till we keep playing this conservative way. This high win % comes in games where opposition sides don`t really care about the immediate series in hand. While the other sides use 3 years for building a WC side, this Kohli-Shastri duo uses it as an opportunity to shore up the win % in order to keep their jobs. Who benefits from these conservative starts and an even more conservative team selection policy in a series like this. England went straight into the gameplans they were looking to implement for the 2019 WC in their very first series post-2015. Why are we so averse to that? Kedar Jadhav and Dhawan should`nt be in the side.

I can agree with you on Kedar even though I really feel bad for him for how he has been used. However, you can't say the same about Dhawan. That guy got a hundred for India in the last game he played before coming into this series. He has probably been India's most important player in ICC tournaments in ODI's. Yes, I can understand the age factor with him and that's where the management needs to sit him down and talk with him. Whether he is really serious about actually making to the next WC. If he is, he deserves to get a a few chances. If he does not perform in those chances given to him, you can certainly look for someone else.

I know I said that if you send Iyer/Pandey at number 4 in T20, it won't work. However, it can work in ODI because they will get a bit of extra time in ODI's to settle themselves before going for big shots. If the team is really looking at Pant as a long term number 4, we need to find someone who can be a decent number 5. Iyer/Pandey are not going to be useful at number 5. As I have been saying, in my opinion, we don't have anyone in domestic cricket right now who can just come in and play at that number 5 position right now. Until we don't find that number 5, I think Pant is the only player in our line-up who can bat at that position.

Some very fair points made by Murali Karthik in the Comm Box

1. KL Rahul was known to be no.4 in the WC and was asked to open the batting later and did decently well
2. Now finds himself out of the side
3. There has to be consistency in what you do and that is where the management has to sit down and talk

These were the points he made. I don't rate him at all as a Commentator but this time he is right on the point.[DOUBLEPOST=1565537196][/DOUBLEPOST]
Pant at no.4. RIP Shastri, Kohli and co.

I would rather have Pant and Hardik Pandya at. 5 & 6 respectively with Jadeja at 7.

I really like Pant. I believe that if he is develops properly, he can be India’s version of AbD himself, a number four who can find boundaries easily in the middle overs all over the park. However, it makes no sense to send him ahead of Iyer in an ODI right now because Pant is nowhere near mature enough right now to ‘build’ an innings consistently where as Iyer is someone who can score quickly via boundaries and has also got the ability to rotate strike well. It baffles me that the Indian side has continuously misused Iyer, any other international team would love to have a player in his mould.

@Aalay is right, there is no one in domestic cricket who can play the role of a number five well right now and Pant is our best option for it. Shankar is the only other option I can see playing there and I’m not sure if he will walk back into the side easily.

Enough of Jadhav too, he isn’t the type of player you would want at six and I hope he is playing only because both Hardik and Shankar aren’t in the squad.

On the topic of openers, I know that Rahul is the current backup, but would like to see Gill get a few games eventually. While many have compared him to Kohli, I feel he is much better utilised as an opener like Sachin who can get positive starts in the powerplay, something that Rahul has failed to do so far in his ODI career. Gill also strikes me as the type of extremely talented young player that needs to be quickly integrated into the side like Kohli and Sachin himself. It will be a shame if he is left to grind in domestic cricket for years before getting his chance due to the current incumbents being good, as I can see Gill easily surpassing our current opening duo in a few years if backed properly.[DOUBLEPOST=1565537575][/DOUBLEPOST]
Ashwin's behaviour today is being criticised a lot. What has he done now?

His TNPL stunt perhaps? Definitely deserves to be criticised for that.

Perhaps it was started by Vijay ?[DOUBLEPOST=1565538468][/DOUBLEPOST]I really like the way Iyer has played today. Looked very positive in his approach and is finding his runs quite comfortably here. He is getting into some good positions to play his shots and is looking to score runs.

Kohli has brought his partners in trouble today by some blind running. Fortunately we haven't lost a wicket whenever it has happened.

Whoever said that England immediately looked to built for the next WC after that disastrous 2015 campaign is bang on the money. That was one of the main reasons they won the next WC when no one would expect that they could. England played it smartly behind the scenes and they put a lot of backing and effort into changing the dynamics of their team.

I don't even think Kohli himself is that dissatisfied with Indias semifinal exit. He seemed satisfied given that india topped the group stage, and here he is back again picking the likes of Jadhav when India should be bringing many of the youngsters that have consistently performed in the "A" team like Mayank Agarwal to replace Dhawan to give them the selectors a glimpse to see what they can work with in the next few years. Whatever happens, it's imperative that planning begins now for the Indian team and many new candidates need to come through. I'd preferred not to see the likes of Rohit or Kohli not playing this series to see what the young guns can do for India.

Sheryas Iyer is a good fit for #4 I believe. He can rotate the strike well, hold up one end and hit if required. Pant will become one hell of a player later on, but he should be demoted for #5. He's the right man to be at the crease for the final 10-15 overs of an innings. India are wasting their time having him at #4.

Disappointing! Very disappointing! This group of people handling Indian cricket right now are so out of place that it makes it frustrating to follow Indian cricket. Again Pant at No. 4 and again Kedar Jadhav who struggles but yet is asked to play in those slog overs. Why couldn't we use this opportunity to blood Shubman Gill and give him games, is beyond me? If we really needed a batsman who could bowl a bit, we could have picked Krunal Pandya or Deepak Hooda.

With this mindset and approach, India will not win in 2023 also. With our talent, we will top league stages and make the knockouts easily. But in a pressure game, our approach will ensure that we will most likely fall short. Well that wont rattle us coz we will bring up our win percentage and keep our jobs

Happy with Iyer's knock but will he get a steady run now? I hope but I cant say it with confidence.

Indian team management sucks. On top of that, we have Mr. Kohli, who loves to pick wrong teams on different types of tracks like we saw in England tests. Why can't we remove him as captain? Rohit Sharma would be the sensible option. And no more Ravi Shastri for God's sake!

Just want to give a shoutout to Kohli. I mean I do understand people's frustration regarding his decision on team selection but what an amazing inning he played yesterday. It's almost as if we Indians fans now take it for granted because he does this in every other match and the sheer consistency that he shows is just incredible. I mean I will agree with people who say Smith is better than Kohli in tests but when it comes to limited overs, Kohli is in just different league all together. So if I am looking for an all format player, Kohli would definitely be my choice. Also good to see Iyer grabbing his chance when it matters. Hopefully he can now get some consistent chances to show his worth.

TBH I don't care whether India wins a big tournament or wins any series or stay no.1 in all 3 formats. I just want them to be a dominant force in Cricket. Trophies don't define dominance to say the least and rankings don't give any insights. And I will be frank here, I loved the way India fought back in the Test series in England after losing at Lord's. And I did love the way they played at Johannesburg in the South Africa Test series on one of the most difficult tracks that one can get. I look for quality and not wins or rankings or trophies.
