Indian Premier League - General Discussion

What do you guys think about this? :rolleyes

Sounds like a normal thing to do in an auction. If there is a problem in this over morality or ethics, auctions are the one thing that needs to be scrapped.

I'm also surprised at how much Smith has been underrated in recent days. He wasn't worth whatever the Royals were paying him but he is a bargain at near base price. And given how much he's attempting to be a lot more aggressive in recent months in situations where he previously hasn't started, he could be very valuable if he is the number four/five who gives you a quick thirty/fifty.

My opinion on it (I am no one to say if its right or wrong) - it was very risky and also the fact that they have chosen to post about it on social media after its all done, is very silly and smacks of unprofessionalism to me. Now lets say Smith has a stunning IPL 2021 and becomes a hot cake in the 2022 mega auction. Lets say RCB has another very bad year (I am not praying for it; just a 'what if...') and as part of rebuilding their side, they find Steve Smith to be a crucial option to their plans for 2022. Maybe they even need a new captain if they finally lose patience with Virat... Now what happens? Either they close themselves out for Smith because they've posted this video or they sign up Smith and deal with the awkwardness.

Considering RCB's past of seeing their players move to other franchises and show their value, its surprising that RCB haven't learnt their lessons.

I don't think a player would mind anything like that. What they want is money in their pocket and a side where they can get into the first XI. These things are very common and are known from a long time I believe.

Woohoo!!! This news is honey to the ears! Chennai is shortlisted as one of the IPL venues for this year; Mumbai looks doubtful due to the COVID cases

I hope Mumbai gets their home ground (Wankhede is special irrespective of whose fan you are).

I cant wait for MSD to walk out to the Chepauk roar!! Fingers crossed....

At least they started trying to trick people then. I think it's basic auction strategy. You sort of know where half the lot will land up in a mini auction. If other teams start posting about how they tricked RCB to shell out the locker on guys like Tymal Mills, Jamieson and Maxwell this year etc. you will not need to watch stand up comedy for a year.

These are just tactics to save jobs of the chaps who do auctions. Obviously, they're at the behest of the great cricketing mind that is their captain. I will never understand why they didn't RTM KL Rahul in the last mega auction and retained AB instead. Believe it or not, they have managed another own goal by swapping Morris for Maxwell and paying another 4.5 crores. Dube will shine at RR and he did practically nothing wrong in two years. Looking forward to seeing Jamieson get clobbered like a lamb and then benching it for the rest of the IPL while Richardson plays as the overseas quick.

Interesting to hear that Punjab, Rajasthan and Hyderabad have asked BCCI why their home grounds aren't being considered. It looks like IPL plans to host the IPL in Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Lucknow (from what I've read).

Hyderabad has no issues and even their CM has offered to host the IPL in their state. Not sure what the status of Jaipur and Dharmashala/Mohali is. I'd think if issues exist, host with no crowds. Else host with 40-50%

Nothing new in that. I honestly never really understood their picks in the auction and hence I would conclude that they have been terrible in the auctions itself. Punjab is no different either.

without crowds is plausible
I read somewhere that Mumbai won't host IPL this time. Maybe on Cricinfo.

Punjab and Delhi are absolutely brimming with young talent. I think Punjab could be a very serious contender this year. Okay, they are paying Richardson a lot but it's more auction dynamics as fast bowlers are rare and now everyone has understood the importance of bowlers. I knew Richardson would land up there once Starc wasn't in the auction. The only reason I wasn't sure of Punjab getting Starc was because RCB could have paid 35 for him.

Watching Hasaranga bowl in the Sri Lanka series, it is clear that teams have made a major error in not even trying to go for him. He has a world class googly and is a hard hitting finisher. Pretty much the perfect T20 player. CSK in particular could have benefitted from nabbing him at base price if they were going after Gowtham instead of Mo to solve our wrist spin issue.

IPL 2021 schedule is OUT!!

HORRENDOUS!!! Playing behind closed doors when they just played games in Chennai and Ahmedabad with 50% crowd with no issues.. And I guess BCCI put themselves into a twat where they had to refuse Mohali/Dharmashala hosting rights due to the farmer protests and so they had to show the world that its not about politics and they tagged Jaipur and Hyderabad together, and these franchises raised a cry about no home games and unfair on them and so BCCI forces teams to play in neutral venues.

From a personal perspective, I am so gutted that MSD cant play in Chepauk and give the Chennai fans a chance to see him play his final days of IPL. I am not sure he is coming back to play next year with the mega auction happening (maybe he might; but maybe he won't). If he doesn't come back as a player, it would be the saddest thing for Chennai fans that they couldn't see him one last time in Chepauk.

From a CSK chances perspective - they play 5 games in Mumbai (out of a total of 14). On a Wankhede pitch, our spinners will be almost nullified. We better pray that our seamers are in prime shape and rhythm and hope we can get out of the Mumbai leg unscathed. If we do get out of the Mumbai leg unscathed (we play in Mumbai in a trot from the start and then move on), then we get to Delhi where the pitch is more to CSK's liking. Bangalore is a lottery and Kolkata can be unpredictable. I just hope CSK are better prepared this time for the empty crowds and also unlike last time, most of their players (except for Dhoni) are coming in after playing significant amount of cricket and are better oiled and flowing. I dont think CSK will make it to the playoffs, yet again, but I expect a better performance than last year where CSK is in with a chance till their last game.

If bcci can allow 50% of crowd in Chennai and Ahmedabad in test series against England Then why not in IPL?
