CSK have not purchased the amount of new names (as they've done today) anytime in the past. What they have now, is some future proofing when some of the players retire/lose form.

CSK didn't go hard enough on Faf, which suggested that they were ready to lose him.

Yeah, I don't think they've purchased poorly but it looks like Plan A was sign everyone from last season. They've got some smart, if not, spectacular buys as replacements.
