Indian Premier League - General Discussion

I am a huge Raina fan and I believe in supporting people when they are down but he is living in a clown's world if he expects to be picked by any franchise which he is as mentioned in an interview with him. There are unbelievable number of cricketers in India busting their nuts to get a 10L contract in the IPL while he just wants to play IPL and do nothing on the domestic circuit. Cricket has given him a lot and it's good to give life back and not just expect life to keep giving. He has also just lost his dad so he is in a miserable space right now so it's not fair to judge him either. Let's see where he is at in a year.

The only team that would've gone for Raina, was CSK. I knew that no other team would be looking to get him (though ppl on social media kept talking about Gujarat or Lucknow or an RCB trying for him). He looked pretty bad against the short ball in the last season that it was way more worse than his earlier troubles with the short ball. Also I think the likely move of playing the IPL in Maharashtra with his red soil pitches which will favor a lot more bounce, could've factored against Raina. When CSK picked Shivam Dube (after having picked the likes of Uthappa, Rayudu already on Day 1), my opinion got strengthened about CSK not going after Raina at all in this auction. I feel Dube is that Raina replacement in this squad. I dont think Dhoni will even turn to Dube's bowling much at all, with the plethora of allrounders that CSK have lined up in their squad. Dube will likely play as a pure batsman, who might occasionally bowl that 1-2 overs if and when Dhoni is really pressed to.

I just hope play offs are not set on points. Top 2 from both the group should qualify for Play Offs. If I remember correctly, 3 teams from Group B qualified and 1 from Group A based on overall points. It completely defeats the grouping stage's point.

Play off

  1. Group A 1st vs Group B 1st
  2. Group A 2nd vs Group B 2nd
  3. Eliminator - Loser of the 1st match vs Winner of the second match.
  4. Finals - Winner of 1st match vs Winner of Eliminator.
This way we can keep the same format. This way the winner of both groups get a chance to be in finals twice.

I feel that the following format for the Playoffs will work best:

Qualifier 1: Top Team of Group A (vs) Top Team of Group B
Eliminator: 2nd Team of Group A (vs) 2nd Team of Group B
Qualifier 2: Loser of Qualifier 1 (vs) Winner of Eliminator
Final: Winner of Qualifier 1 (vs) Winner of Qualifier 2

This will retain the current Playoff format, except it incentivizes the idea of finishing Top of each group. Eliminator is supposed to eliminate one team from the competition. Winner of Eliminator has to play the Loser of Qualifier 1.

We both said the same thing except my verbiage was a little off. I called what you called Eliminator as Qualifier 2/Match 2. I completely agree, that should be the format.

Screw all this.

94 matches in all.
90 matches in the league stage.
Each team plays 18 matches.
Each team faces all other teams twice.

Not practical. But ambitious.

I wish it could be more like how it is in NFL. But in order to have that we need ranking system which wont happen. In NFL, each team plays the team in the group home and away and will be play other team once every 2-3 years. Since there are 32 teams in NFL, it absolutely makes sense and wont make sense in 10 team tournament.

Lets have teams play in double double round robin. Each team plays each other once at home, once away, once in England and once in Cambodia. 200 days of cricketing carnival.

Once the season ends, immediately have the auction and play it again for 200 more days. fearsome tweak International cricket. IPL > Cambodia

I'd honestly like to see them use a 2 group 5 team round robin structure. The top 3 can progress to a Super Six which culminates in the PlayOff stage.Going by the current scenario, it would be an overkill of sorts(even if the 2010 model is followed)

Then screw yourself. :p

I want to watch India play atleast 8 months of Cricket a year. For that if IPL needs to be compromised then be it.

Are you sure you aren't going insane? Think about the interest span of the fans. They would be over consumed!

Edit: Sorry did not read the last sentence :p..... Good sarcasm. :lol
