Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Honestly these auctions are more fun than most matches for me. Just very interesting to see how the auction pans out. Think DC were the best overall, they've played it smart. Inflating prices and always on the lookout for cheap buys. GT's auction strategy was a little hard to understand but I dont think they are doomed as some fans say. Hard to predict the table at this point in time.
Read some discussion on users from here being interested in a mock auction, and I would highly recommend it. I myself have found a community where I play such mock auctions and its one of the most fun things I've done.

Glad to see Ahmedabad getting some matches at last.
Rumors are that Mumbai will all their matches at Pune so that all teams have neutral venues.

This proves that even IPL governing council chose Ahmedabad for playoffs thinking that Gujarat built such a lame squad in auctions that they cannot qualify for playoffs.

I'm fine by either Amazon or Sony, StarS is so boring.

Would be terrific if Amazon Prime gets it! Would be a huge reach in North America (USA). Compared to ESPN+, Amazon Prime easily has almost 50x the no of subscribers, due to its Prime shipping and extremely popular OTT platform that releases a lot of original titles. Prime Video is a major rival for Netflix in the USA market.

I think its time Willow is phased out and these new players like ESPN+ and Amazon Prime take over cricket broadcasting in the US!

Willow is just the Neo Sports equivalent. The app is shitty, the coverage on live TV sucks and the website is even worst. I definitely agree that we need Prime or ESPN to take over complete broadcast of all cricketing matches.

Willow served huge purpose in the early days when cricket streaming in USA was at a very infancy stage and Willow was the only option to watch live cricket. But Willow cannot survive as its not a complete package that diversifies into other areas (e.g. movies, other sporting events, TV shows, etc). A pure cricket based platform will not survive when other big players understand the game's popularity now and try to add it to their existing portfolio.

I'll predict that Willow could possibly shut their shop in a few more years (more so if Amazon Prime starts winning digital rights to cricket streaming).

Agree that it brought Cricket to the US. It also currently holds right for all USA cricket (domestic and international). I however feel that they never made progress. It might not survive being cricket only partner but it can very well be bought by one of the bigger players.

For Willow's existence or survival, it definitely needs the much anticipated T20 league where KKR and Punjab have already got ownership for. A USA based T20 league streaming exclusively on Willow will up the brand value where Amazon or ESPN will try to buy them off. Willow is just a small company of 250 employees, so its not as if its a huge big scale company.

But then you guys also need to keep in mind about the Indian audience in India who couldn't afford Amazon, Hotstar, ESPN+ etc. won't have access to the content. And it would be like majority of the country is deprived off the action. IPL Governing Council won't let it happen. They can ofcourse open up without compromising on the offline platforms.

Hmm...don't we require a subscription to SonyLiv currently to watch IPL matches? Don't think it's been free to air for quiet a while now.

That is for online. We do have Star Sports 1 broadcasting the matches on Cable networks/ STB / Dish. These are cheaper options that majority of people can afford.

For India, it’d be the difference between a Hotstar and a Prime account. I know Hotstar is more popular, but Prime is making inroads (with all those acquisitions of direct OTT releases of Indian films during pandemic). Getting cricket could propel them. Anyways as you said, India has other avenues like cable broadcast which will be the main driver of how the public consumes the league.
