Indian Premier League - General Discussion

CSK is rebuilding RPSG Part-2!!! How the hell did they get Ben Stokes? Thats a MASSIVE buy! I know the Chepauk thing and his batting style is brought, but Stokes is a much changed cricketer and can easily adapt (and we dont even know how the new Chepauk looks like). As some say, captaincy option too after MSD. Stokes had his best ever IPL season with Dhoni-Fleming at RPSG in 2017 (now which IPL team has Steven Smith? :D)

Rahane comes to the place where he could maximize his usage in the remaining part of his playing days! People make it a joke about CSK picking old players, but the fact that they do it every year and somehow pull it off too, says that it works. A year under Dhoni captaincy and a few years under Dhoni-Fleming coaching can help Jinxs. He's definitely better placed than Pujara to make the XI in some game or two. Dont know much about the U-19 buys (and I am sure @icyman is lining up his thoughts on their ill fate of being picked for CSK :D) but post Dhoni and Rayudu, surely some of them likely to be used.

As @LiveLoveABD says, need a really good death bowler and CSK is set!
For a change, I'm quite happy with their direction this year. You were right in the RPSG makeover and that seems to be a step in the right direction.

Stokes is a massive buy,So is Rahane. Things seem to be ticking for CSK. Let's hope it stays that way. Though I gotta admit that not bidding for Dinesh Bana did surprise me a bit.

Lord Bhagath demanded to be bought before him.

Mumbai have an enviable pipeline of talent too IMO. Brevis, Stubbs, Tilak and Green will be household names in years to come.

I rate Kartikeya well… he impressed me in the last Ranji campaign he played and he’s shown some impressive variations. He’s a better option than every domestic spinner available in this auction and if nurtured properly can be another one of those ‘MI scout’ finds. Mulani has been one of the best in the business at FC level.. he’s got the capability to reproduce what Krunal provided at least with the ball.

The lack of domestic quicks must be their biggest worry as one injury to Bumrah means they’ll be scrambling around. Tendulkar was decent in the SMAT but it remains to be seen how well that translates to a higher level. Madhwal is another wildcard option. Their overseas pace stocks looks really good as always… Jhye in the right setup can be world class and Duan Jansen is apparently a better white ball bowler than his more illustrious sibling.

I have no doubt that Green will be something unbelievable as well but to break the bank on a problem you do not have is a bit RCB of the yesteryear. I would have gone for a reliable leg spinner like Zampa for MI and unquestionably looked for domestic fast bowlers. Ishant Sharma for one even today at the Wankhede would have been a handful.

The joke going around Chennai social media circles is that "they are thanking Punjab Kings for outbidding Mumbai Indians and picking Sam Curran in the auction yesterday, because that now gives Chennai a very good chance of buying Sam Curran back for IPL 2024" :lol:D:p

Curran's price tag was a bit too steep. That too coming in a mini auction makes it a tad debatable.

No doubt that teams went hard for him based of his MOS performance in the WT20. Still INR 18 CR! :wow:

I don't think Sam Curran deserves that price tag at all. He doesn't have the pace for the Indian pitches. His 130 kmph pace will be picked off in these smaller stadium with flatter pitches. I reckon he will be promoted to opening or at the very least 3 for a few cameos to see if he pays off.

The arguement I can posit is that the Chepauk pitch does hold up a bit, and maybe with his pace and variation he can drag the game back at some points. But I am still not sure that price tag for him is in any way representative of his talent. Barring the season in 2020, were he went at 8.5 rpo - he has almost being going at 10 rpo and averaging 30+ with the ball.

LSG's mentor Gambhir doesn't seem too pleased with KL performance for India. If KL goes like this in the current season, I'm sure LSG will replace him. Bear in mind, the Goenkas will not take too kindly to failure- they replaced Dhoni at RPSG, KL is child's play for them.

Hope that puts an end to his captaincy aspirations as a whole. I’m not one for shutting down on someone’s dream in this manner but he’s just been... not up to the mark.

I am his biggest critic and that is because, I cannot stand him as a captain. If he fails and is in XI, I am fine, but if someone tells me that he is our next captain... that is what erks me the most.

Kyle Jamieson is unofficially ruled out of IPL 2023! How did CSK even think of buying him when he was coming off a very long injury layoff and when he is not yet proved about his comeback from the layoff?

Hopefully this gives CSK an opportunity to pick a seamer who can bowl at the death. Not many options out there, but if they want a specialist death bowler, social media seems to be ringing the name of "Sisanda Magala" from SA who is 32 years old and has a reputation for death bowling. His fitness is questionable, but he can tonk a few balls down the batting order too, which could make CSK get him as replacement.

However I hope Gerald Coetzee is available (rumors about him joining Mumbai keep floating, but nothing conclusive on it yet) and if he is available, CSK should literally swoop in on him. Coetzee is known to CSK management (having played for JSK in the recent SAT20). He has good economy and impressive speed and seems an all phase bowler, and importantly, his batting skills are good for a lower order hitter.

I’ve been puzzled by the Jamieson pick ever since the first bid for him at the auction due to our need for a Bravo replacement then. Had faith in him coming back to fitness but that’s unfortunately gone out for a toss.

Magala’s fitness issues were a thing in the past but I don’t think they’re a big concern now. He’s played for the Proteas recently and they do have some stern fitness tests given that Magala himself failed them in the past and a talented cricketer like DvN couldn’t pass them either despite her personal best. I’m not entirely sold on him as whenever I’ve seen him play for South Africa he’s just been below par but death bowlers aren’t easy to judge unless you watch them consistently and I didn’t watch the SA20 to make a judgement on him in recent times.

If Coetzee is available I’d rather go for him though. As I’ve been saying for nearly a couple of years he’s the next big SA pacer and someone with more potential than Jansen. I’d honestly release Jamieson to have him here permanently, the lad has that good of a potential to become a superstar.

I am fervently hoping CSK gets Coetzee. Hopefully they use the JSK connection smartly.

Doesn't really change things when CSK aren't going to qualify for the playoffs anyways.
