On paper that hurt the senior Kaif!

Mohammad Nabi is a steal for MI. Another all rounder to the mix, now Hardik can retire.

Yeah, I guess he'd be a good buy if he was Australian
I mean I havent seen him bowl but based on his records, an average of 20 is good but economy of almost 9 is horrendous. What are your true opinion?

After Wood he's probably the quickest bowler England have, bowls in the powerplay and the death. He's a great substitute, which is what he probably will be, for Mitchell Starc. He was a better than Spencer Johnson in The Hundred who went for 10Cr.

My review for all the Overseas Quicks in the IPL Auction List (Im bored)
  1. :saf: Gerald Coetzee - Is the big name right now, will fetch big bucks for sure, feel CSK/MI will pick him up, but not sure if he'll 100% deliver to the cost immediately considering his experience (giving away runs while taking wickets)
  2. :aus: Pat Cummins - WC winning captain, should also go big in the auction. Teams like KKR will want him back in squad, and I feel RCB might target him as possible captaincy option. That even opens the door for CSK (Who Knows?)
  3. :eng: Chris Woakes - Might not be the best T20 bowler and that too in India, but for teams like RR and MI who may need a No. 7 and a depth in the batting order, he could be one of the options.
  4. :nzf: Lockie Ferguson - Not talked about enough among top quicks in the auction since he was released. But could be a backup for any team who doesn't get Starc/Cummins/Coetzee like they wanted. Pace is Pace
  5. :aus: Mitchell Starc - The last of the Big 3 pacers names in the auction but not the least. Could he have an RCB homecoming or finally play a season for KKR without withdrawing? Any team with a need for overseas pacer will go for him.
  6. :aus: Josh Hazlewood - Would honestly be as valuable as Starc, Cummins but sadly not available full-season. Wonder if any team will still try to get him. If he plays 9-10 games could be worth it under 5cr.
  7. :wi: Alzarri Joseph - Could be another great option for any team that doesnt have the purse for a big shot quick and need a pacer. Such as probably Mumbai Indians. Where he took his 6/12 on debut.
  8. :sri: Dilshan Madushanka - Priced at 50 lakhs, he too could get a team off his WC Form. Not the most flashy option in the first set but clearly he's been hyped enough to be named this high in the list. Not a bad T20 bowler either.
  9. :aus: Sean Abbott - After a long list of uncapped Indians and a few overseas batters, another quick in the list. Might not get buys though at 2 crores. Can bat 7 so a team like RR can potentially try him for that position if they trust him with the ball.
  10. :aus: Wes Agar - I swear to god if he gets a bid then I don't know what to say. There are plenty of better options and don't get how he's this high up in the list.
  11. :eng: Brydon Carse - Will be even weirder if he gets sold. He does have ties with SRH at SA20, but they better not use that to bid for Carse with 33 crores in their purse
  12. :eng: Tom Curran - With his recent BBL form I won't even be surprised if he gets bids. Again, the No. 7 conundrum and if his bowling continues to be consistent he could be a very utility player. But still, doubt it.
  13. :wi: Matthew Forde - Just debuted internationally, not getting sold unless MI do some Duan Jansen ninja shit like they did in the recent auction.
  14. :eng: George Garton - Was at RCB as replacement once upon a time. But doesn't really make the cut now imo. Again he is a capable batter up till 7, but not worth it
  15. :wi: Jason Holder - I would say he fits at RR but then I realise they released him. Was bought last year to fulfil the No 7 role but neither delivered with bat or ball to expectations. Might still get bids due to his ability to bring balance to the XI.
  16. :eng: Jamie Overton - Is he seriously gonna get bids? Too many English domestic quicks too high here in the list
  17. :wi: Keemo Paul - Once upon a time a hero for DC. But I'm not sure how good he is now. But a No. 7 option for teams who need him + a finisher from what I remember from those IPL days. If he's good.
  18. :saf: Dwaine Pretorius - Best possible No. 7 option + death bowler, only issue is his age and he's retired from internationals. But at least he will be available. Should get bids for sure imo.
  19. :aus: Daniel Sams - Should honestly stop getting teams by now. I don't think he's that great as a bowler alone and unless he scores really well with the bat as finisher, not worth it
  20. :wi: Odean Smith - Please don't get sold. Literally awful with the ball and leaks runs at 11 RPO basically every game, but can just hit the ball really hard. Literally like a Carlos Brathwaite. But IPL teams enjoy those kind of caribbean hitters so who knows what team he'd go to.
  21. :eng: David Willey - A decent choice if a team wants a powerplay bowler who can also offer lower-order batting. Can't see him starting but definitely a backup for many teams. Could get bids since he's now fully devoted to franchise cricket
  22. :afg: Fareed Ahmad - Might complete the Afghan Pace Trio in IPL if he gets picked. But that's not happening. Better left armers are there easily
  23. :ban: Taskin Ahmed - Can't believe he has never got sold once, he's a really improved bowler for Bangladesh, could be a great option for many teams and hope he does get bids.
  24. :eng: Gus Atkinson - With the current hype and his pace, he might attract some teams honestly. But I feel IPL is too early for him. Focus on Internationals
  25. :sri: Dushmantha Chameera - Around 2021-22 he could have actually got some bids , but has been injured too often and played very less to be relevant enough. Surprised, I will be, if he doesn't go unsold.
  26. :aus: Ben Dwarshuis - Great BBL Bowler but I really fear for him if he plays the IPL. Could go the Meredith way or even worse. Classic PBKS buy (Fun Fact: He was in KXIP Squad, 2018)
  27. :eng: Richard Gleeson - I don't know honestly. Looked decent for England but why him of all players? He's pretty old anyway. Unsold.
  28. :nzf: Matt Henry - Has barely played T20Is for NZ. Teams will bid if they want international experience but can't mix formats. Don't think Henry fits in a T20 IPL Team Today.
  29. :ban: Shoriful Islam - Another improved Bangladeshi Bowler and left armer. But dont think he will honestly get bids now, but who knows
  30. :nzf: Kyle Jamieson - I might be wrong but he is NOT a T20 bowler. Plenty better options. Leave him to his red ball heroics, but that 15cr buy in 2021 was a disaster and he shouldn't get sold now either.
  31. :aus: Spencer Johnson - Another target for PBKS to replicate Meredith and Jhye. His pace could be attractive plus he already has ties with KKR in the MLC. Might be the BBL star pick for this year's auction if teams want him.
  32. :eng: Chris Jordan - No. He's jumped from RCB to SRH to KXIP to CSK to MI, and now it's enough. Literally terrible T20 bowler now.
  33. :sri: Lahiru Kumara - Not even a great choice for SL, leaks runs too often. He's surely, surely going unsold
  34. :wi: Obed McCoy - So unbelievably low in the list. So much better than so many people I've listed. He was good for RR at the death in his debut season and done well for WI in T20Is. Should be a great backup pick for any team at a low price.
  35. :aus: Riley Meredith - Has somehow played for both PBKS and MI, but I reckon there are much better players than him here. Should get sold only if the pace obsession is still on and even then Spencer is a better choice.
  36. :eng: Tymal Mills - Has he really improved? I always thought he was another run machine with the ball. Didn't really work out for MI either recently so unsold I guess
  37. :nzf: Adam Milne - Another hidden gem down the list. Surely a better option than most of the express quicks here. If only he doesn't get injured, surely a backup choice for many teams. Could see RR get him with Shane Bond in the personnel now.
  38. :aus: Lance Morris - Another pace sensation like Spencer but his hype isn't even in T20 cricket. He's got selected only in Red Ball for Australia, so if he gets picked it's again crazy pace obsession.
  39. :zim: Blessing Muzarabani - Could have got bids in the last few auctions but seems like teams don't have interest in him. Hasn't done anything in particular recently, so probably unsold again.
  40. :zim: Richard Ngarava - Not better than Blessing, but his record in T20Is in 2023 has been incredible. This could honestly make him more wanted. But still feel he's far behind others to get sold.
  41. :saf: Wayne Parnell - Possibly good option and I see teams going for him if they need a left-armer plus a batting option. Could be one of RR's targets. Not in his prime though
  42. :ban: Mustafizur Rahman - He's fallen off a cliff seeing how low his name is. Sure choice for a decent price if this was a few years ago. But still, he will probably get sold as backup or for teams without big purses. MI could get the guy back in their colours.
  43. :aus: Jhye Richardson - The man who fetched 14cr in 2021. He should honestly be way higher if he wasn't so injured and played so little due to that. Would be one of the most valuable picks even now otherwise. If he stays fit, teams should go for him as backup.
  44. :eng: Ollie Robinson - I have never heard of him playing T20 cricket. And it does not start in the IPL. Unsold please.
  45. :eng: George Scrimshaw - From making ODI debut to being in IPL Player List he's come a long way in no time. But on par with Carse and Gleeson, why him ??
  46. :nzf: Tim Southee - What did Southee do to be lower than the likes of Scrimshaw and Ollie Robinson I don't know. He's also much better than Jamieson and Henry in T20s who were much above. Considering he still starts for NZ in T20Is, and ignoring his past IPL Record, he could get bids. Honestly feel he doesn't get much time in IPL as he deserves
  47. :aus: Billy Stanlake - Haven't even seen him in BBL for 1.5 years. Don't know how good he is now but he wasn't that great before either, apart from the 2018 Peak. Not gonna get sold
  48. :eng: Olly Stone - Another pace sensation but again I've not seen him much in LOIs (though I know he has played) and he gets injured a lot too. Not a player I'd see any IPL team target in particular
  49. :wi: Oshane Thomas - He isn't that good from what I've heard, he was around a lot in 2018 and 2019 and recently got recalled for WI but I doubt he's getting an IPL Contract without anything special
  50. :sri: Nuwan Thushara - Only thing I know about this dude is I've seen him in 2021 SL T20I Squads. No idea how good he is, but he's clearly not first choice for SL. If even Chameera struggles to get sold, he's not even gonna raise a bid.
  51. :saf: Lizaad Williams - More exciting options are there and to put it simply, Unsold.
  52. :eng: Luke Wood - If teams obsess over random England players, he could get a bid. Better choice than Carse, Scrimshaw and the likes. But would again be a very obscure pick. Unsold for me.
  53. :saf: Corbin Bosch - I remember him being a hard hitter and bowler in CPL. Don't know how good he is now. Actually got an RR contract replacing NCN in 2022. if RR really were looking at him, he'd be a pretty good choice now actually.
  54. :saf: Duan Jansen - Got an MI gig last year but since MI released him (which I didn't expect after they placed faith on him when he's uncapped), don't think other teams will really get him. SRH should honestly do it for the vibes and bowl Jansens from both ends. You don't know which one is bowling in which end.
  55. :saf: Ottniel Baartman - A more exciting SA uncapped bowler for sure. Did great for SREC, so he already has good links with Sunrisers. But don't think he's IPL level yet, so should go unsold.
  56. :saf: Nandre Burger - Another prospect from SA, uncapped and fast bowler. Has ties with CSK as he played for Joburg. So another similar case, if CSK really wanna nurture him in this level too, they could make a base price pick if no one contests.
  57. :wi: Shamar Joseph - I don't know who he is at all. So no opinion here. I guess Unsold.
  58. :saf: Kwena Maphaka - Youngest guy in the Auction I heard. Will be huge if he gets sold but I don't think that's happening. It's cool he actually made it to the final shortlist, wanna see what he can do.
  59. :nzf: Will O'Rourke - Young NZ pacer I guess, he's done well in NZ domestic but he's not getting sold here
  60. :ned: Paul van Meekeren - Last one, but surely not the least. Unbelievably lowly placed cause he's an associate bowler ?? I'm glad he's made the list honestly, and I'd be happy to see him go to a team. And it won't be the worst thing ever, and he can be a great backup. But most likely, unsold.

And I'm done. Spent 45 minutes in the night after studying the whole day, felt satisfying. Let me know thoughts

My takeaways-

I was *absolutely* wrong about Thushara. Blame me for not watching the holy T10 league.
Burger goes to RR, not CSK, and that was unexpected
I guess Gus Atkinson is ready for IPL after all.
McCoy and Milne have been robbed by not getting bids.
Spencer Johnson is officially the BBL star pick like I predicted, just like Jhye and Meredith at a high price, but it's not PBKS , it's goddamn GT.

There was a sense of panic in GT’s camp when they were bidding for Spencer… almost as if they realised they needed someone who can bowl at serious pace to round out their attack.

Burger is the second JSK Proteas player to head to RR. A weird coincidence for sure. Don’t expect much from Atkinson other than being a rotation option whenever Starc needs a rest.

I still think Henry is the biggest pacer to miss out on a bid (excluding Hazlewood who would not have been available for most of the season) and I’ll die on that hill. At worst he would have been under 2 crores and he’s shown that he can bowl exceptionally well this year in three different teams. This feels like the analysts being spooked by every Kiwi pacer barring Boult being poor or mediocre in the IPL in recent times rather than a purely analytical decision. Still hope to see him as a replacement player when someone inevitably pulls out like a certain Englishman at Bangalore…

Punjab being Punjab.

Honestly, my review on all the teams' auction buys-

  • Daryl Mitchell was slightly overpriced but I feel he was a very good buy. CSK had the money and didn't have much slots to fill, so they did the right move going all out on him and getting him for the middle-order. Moeen is not the same as he was two years ago, and Daryl may fit well at 4. Much better than Stokes in T20s anyway
[*]Ravindra was actually a steal to what I thought he'd go for, but he's probably not good enough to start in T20s. He's a batting AR so Mitchell edges him out, and as a bowler there's no way he makes it over Santner or Theekshana. CSK have enough batdeep already.
[*]Sameer Rizvi was the talk of the Indian uncapped players and it's nice that CSK have gone for a young guy. He may start at Rahane's old place in the XI if he fails and impact player rule will make sure he gets chances. A good backup bat option.
[*]I wish CSK had focused a bit more on the backup overseas pacer rather than getting Mustafizur at the end, but Mustafizur is actually not a bad pick. but his own mate Taskin or McCoy would have been better in current time. Wonder if he starts over Pathirana considering his experience.

  • Brook and Stubbs were both class buys for DC. Their void was in the middle-order at No. 4-6 and they got the buys to make up for that (one being an overseas spot). Brook may start but Stubbs is a great option too at a lower spot like 6 and as finisher.
[*]Kumar Kushagra was a very nice pick seeing DC need a backup WK to Pant other than Abishek Porel. It would be nice to have options especially when Pant is coming off such a huge break and accident. He might even start if they believe he's good enough at the middle-order where they again have an empty spot to fill.
[*]Jhye is an awesome backup for Nortje (both get injured very often) and he's way better than Spencer who they lost the bidding war of. But Hope was a terrible replacement for Phil Goddamn Salt who they released. Guy scores 2 tons back to back in the same series where Hope again proves he's a 1-format ODI player. Might have had a good CPL, but still feel it's a sorry pick

  • Buying Umesh and Tyagi now GT have an insane Indian pace bowling depth where they have to play 2 out of 4 of Shami,Mohit,Umesh and Tyagi which many teams would dream to have (Insert RCB, MI, KKR). It's almost unfair I'd loved to have seen Tyagi in a side where he'd start like *ahem* RCB who clearly had other plans
[*]Buying Shahrukh might have been a plan for a straight swap for Hardik in the XI. But they also have Manohar who's also an able finisher. GT have added depth here too.
[*]Omarzai was a silent and nice pick at his base of 50L, but Spencer was however a terrible buy. Every year has to have it's Australian Pacer Hype-Buy like Jhye and Meredith from 2021. But Spencer for 10 in IPL is insane. He wasn't even a BBL starter like a year and a half ago. GT had the money to go for ANY pacer, ANY good one and an upgrade over Little itself and they chose him. Josh Little is anyway much better.
[*]They bought only 1 Indian WK in Robin Minz which is a bit concerning since Saha is pretty old. Wade as an overseas option doesn't give me much confidence either. Idk why they released Bharat.

  • Starc- I knew it would either be KKR or GT who would get him at that point due to their needs for an OS pace spearhead and their money. KKR were really the ideal choice, but 25 crores- I felt with lesser purse than GT and like half the team to buy, KKR spent too much. They had a lot of slots to fill, and could have gone for someone like Coetzee or Jhye instead.
[*]They still managed to build a decent side otherwise. Sakariya was a huge steal at that price and settled the Indian Pacer problems. Bharat settled the Indian WK problems and he was the most experienced Indian WK in the auction as well, which enables a way for Roy to open now.
[*]Mujeeb was kinda unnecessary with that kind of spin attack they already had. Gus Atkinson was a decent backup for Starc, both being quick bowlers. There were better pacers to choose from, but I won't complain too much about their choices.

  • Shivam Mavi is my key buy from LSG, they also had a problem of Indian Pace Bowler in the XI to assist Mohsin Khan and they bought one of the best picks in the auction they could get. Might again be overpriced but it was what they needed , in a rather settled squad.
[*]Turner as backup to Stoinis is interesting considering his past IPL record but he's been insanely good for Perth and if he can replicate that here it'd be cool. Willey now battles along with Naveen for a backup for Wood and it's worth having many choices when the first choice is so injury-prone.
[*]Other picks rounded the squad up pretty well, Siddharth being a good spin option when Mishra retires, and the U19 star Arshin Kulkarni being an epic buy to invest in as a backup AR. Hope they give him chances.

  • I felt MI went way too OS pace-heavy in the auction despite having two OS quicks in squad already. Coetzee was a mad steal though and surely starts, and Madushanka was also a very good pick. Thushara off his T10 form is dicey but Malinga knows his boys and I'm sure they know what they are doing.
[*]Due to the excess pacers I felt they missed out on an OS batter who could have started over Brevis. But the team's composition seems to be fully an Indian Batting + David, and 3 overseas bowlers, so with that in mind, it probably won't be a huge problem.
[*]Nabi is a nice pick cause they have spin issues- no one experienced besides Chawla and an OS spinner could have always helped. They could have battled for Hasaranga, but this was a smart pick late in the auction. They also got Gopal as a Shokeen replacement in the spin attack

  • Harshal was a great buy for PBKS honestly because again they had a big purse with limited spots and mostly backup players to get. That one weak point was Indian pace depth, with no one except Arshdeep and Kaverappa among the specialists. They have two good options now and have also got a few uncapped guys for the overall pace attack.
[*]Woakes and Rossouw were solid backups for their main Overseas 4 which they had to get as well and this time Punjab had a silent and good auction without any crazy buys (Left that to GT and KKR)
[*]The Shashank Singh screw-up was messed up but hey, they now have an actually IPL experienced Middle-order bat who has finished games before in IPL, and could slot him for Shahrukh's old spot

  • RR had that No. 7 void in the XI to fill but they did a smart move of going for Powell for that spot. He's not a Bowling AR who could bat 7 but with the impact player rule, they actually don't need such a guy and just a finisher who could bowl a bit like Powell was the ideal pick, with an extra Indian Bowler coming in during Bowling to make up for the lack of bowlers. And after trading in Avesh, they surely don't have a scarcity there either.
[*]They also went big for uncapped Shubham Dubey who might be their backup batting option considering their faith in him. TKC as the batsman backup is also epic- he truly deserves it for his form across leagues in the world. Nandre Burger isn't the strongest backup to Boult but they have an insane depth of Indian pacers in the team too so that won't affect them much.

  • RCB in general had the poorest auction. An Overseas and an Indian Pacer were the two main targets and they screwed up both in a way. Not bidding on Sakariya was blasphemous, and sadly they had Tyagi come after Dayal so they had to go for Dayal in desperation and missed Tyagi. They deserved to get screwed with that Cummins buy but SRH are even weirder (Just like they bailed RR out with Brook last year).
[*]Joseph and Ferguson are however good pace options to have alongside Topley. Ferguson was an awesome second round pick at base, while Joseph was surely overpriced but he's been so good for WI across formats in the last few years. Tom Curran would get belted in Chinnaswamy and hopefully he stays on bench. RCB can just rotate the pacers, keeping Topley's fitness in mind and the form of the others.
[*]RCB also needed a better Indian Spinner, and although there weren't great options, someone like Shokeen or Gopal or M Ashwin would have given them more options. It's baffling that they didn't go for any of them which makes them also one of the weakest spin units. Also, they didn't get an overseas spinner to combat this either (could have easily had Mujeeb over Curran).

  • SRH had quite the auction- a settled side that had 30cr+ coming in was sure to wreak havoc. They first went for Head which was a great pick as they lacked aggression in their opening pair, but which was also sad for Glenn Phillips as he definitely should find a spot in the XI. But forget Phillips, they buy Hasaranga and Cummins and now neither Jansen nor Phillips might start and even Wanindu might be on bench.
[*]Wanindu, he was a steal. 1.5cr for one of the best T20 spinners who can actually bat is a big deal. And he's probably not even gonna play. 20cr for Cummins in T20s is bullshit but SRH had the cash to burn so I don't see a huge issue. I just hope Cummins doesn't play all 14 games for the sake of his price- Hasaranga should get chances on spinning turfs and Jansen if Pat is out of form- Performance >> Price.
[*]They added more depth to the Indian pace after releasing Tyagi to get Unadkat. Akash Singh who was in CSK last year is also in the mix which is also good. Pissed that they didnt get KS Bharat again (THEY NEED AN INDIAN WK !!) but Upendra has been good in domestic so I have some hope in him as a decent choice, + Anmolpreet can also keep.
[*]SRH also have 9 OS players technically. Jhatavedh Subramanyan has played for Hong Kong, and I can flex that I had first heard his name as a Hong Kong player before he actually came to Tamil Nadu to play as a local. And now he's in the side. If you'd told me a HK player would get picked in auction, I'd have been hyped for Chapman, but looks like it's a different case.
