Indian Premier League - General Discussion

I am more interested in the retention strategies of MI and KKR.

Mi have brought back Jayawardena,so the focus is clearly on winning another title and mending the ways. 4 retentions can easily be Rohit, Bumrah,Panyda and SKY. But what roles will they essay?

You have a World Cup winning captain(who is the current Indian Test and ODI leader), the Indian Vice-captain, the Existing Indian T20 captain and their current MI captain. Will they rejig? Who gets what? When Rohit was sacked, SKY and Bumrah openly supported him.

KKR interests me cause they have a history of making KXIP-esque retention decisions. There are talks that they may drop Iyer, which doesn't make sense at all. Why would you drop the guy who gave you the IPL? Agreed, his form isn't top-notch, but the leadership has been spot on. Also, I feel it is time for them to move on from Narine and Russell, who are way past their prime now.

KLR has been released by LSG, it seems! Very good move. Hopefully, they make Pooran captain and target some persons who will score quickly.

Cricbuzz not yet reporting KLR release. What baffles me is KKR and DC here.

Pant:
While he has been the main draw at DC, it seems foolish to not to retain him. I would think DC would retain Stubbs, Warner, March, Pant and Axar. Another reason for the 'Pant' question mark could revolve around the changes in DC management. Remember, the original owners GMR will handle all matters pertaining to DC ( Men's) for the next 2 years. It is apparent that Jindal and Kiran Kumar don't see eye to eye on DC decisions.

Iyer:
Sacking an IPL winning captain would be a 1st for any franchisee. Based on history, I would have put my bets on Punjab doing so(if ever they won). KKR seems to be clouded and biased towards Narine and Russell- both are way past their sell dates. Agreed they may have a problem when it comes to the retention- but one would think RInku, Shreyas and Venky were straight forth decisions. Add either of Starc of Varun to the mix as well. Then again, KKR have always screwed up in the retention year- their biggest mistake till date was letting go of SKY- perhaps they might be on course to repeating their folly yet again.

Nothing is final yet. There is also the element of '"franchises intentionally injecting rumors into the public to confuse/disrupt other franchises plans". I would not discuss on the retentions until we see the finalized list on 31st next week.

So, as it stand and if reports are to be believed, Punjab will again go into the auction with the highest possible purse. This means, they can target either of/ all of Pant, Shreyas and KLR. Though the previous stint with KLR makes me believe they wont do the same mistake again, but with KXIP you never know.

It will render useless the importance of the IPL's retention process and auction process if a player is paid LESS than what he is retained or sold for. And if an uncapped player is approached for retention, it means he is good and therefore he will just tell the franchise "no thanks, but I will go into the auction". The player has the power to reject a retention and seek the auction for better prices.

I think you will see that players are getting retained at 4/5/6Cr, but the amount deducted from the team's purse is considerably higher. This was bound to happen.

Jos Buttler not getting retained while Hetmyer is. Definitely not on my bingo cards.

Expected retentions for CSK!

- Ruturaj Gaikwad(18c)
- Matheesha Pathirana (13c)
- Shivam Dube (12c)
- Ravindra Jadeja (18c)
- Mahendra Singh Dhoni (4c)

Having 55 crores left in their purse, I can't see them being able to get the likes of Pant or even Rahul in the auction. Maybe they might again go for Conway to have a wicketkeeping backup and have an unknown Indian guy (like Avanish Rao) as an Indian backup. It actually makes sense to groom some unknown guys as it's getting incredibly tough to buy established Indian talents. I would have released Ravindra Jadeja and tried RTM for him. 18 crores is too high for a retired T20I player like Jadeja. If I were CSK, I would pay MS Dhoni 8-10 crores and give Ruturaj 14 crores.

Happy that they retained Pathirana. Now they need to find a few death bowlers to support him and also his backup (if he gets injured). Also with AR Srikkanth moving from KKR to CSK as the High Performance Analyst, hoping he can do some magic with scouting.

What a coincidence that Harshit Rana comes down with a viral infection just in time when everyone expected his debut today and how it will influence KKR's retention policy for IPL 2025 mega auctions. And what a coincidence that Gautam Gambhir (former KKR mentor, now Indian national team coach) is at the center of it all. Nitish Reddy and Mayank Yadav got their debuts because it helps KKR for those players to not be retained cheaply, but Harshit Rana getting a debut will hurt him and hence he doesnt get his debut.
The whole thing is kinda rigged. Biggest being the rules facilitated to have Dhoni fall into uncapped player bracket. I don't mind though as I'm only a casual watcher of IPL and think of it as no more than a movie.

DC released Pant and Nortje.

GT released Shami, Mohit and Miller and ignored Abhinav Manohar who is a decent hitter. Their strength has been bowling but they have retained only one bowler - Rashid and no fasters.

RR released Buttler, Burger, Boult, Ashwin and Chahal

LSG released QDK, Mohsin Khan and Stoinis

Punjab released Rabada and Ashutosh

RCB released Maxwell

Some very key players on offer this time. Punjab has the largest purse for purchase.

I wonder why Punjab opted to retain anyone. Literal nobodies they have put their faith in.

I agree with the above- the whole thing is rigged. It's all about 'Kiska baap Kaun hai' (whose father's money can influence selections)

Jos Butler hasn't been retained. I though RR had a good core. While they have retained Jaiswal and Sanju, I expected them to keep Butler and Boult in the side.

Manpreet Gony was the 1st!
