Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Its time to play the inexperienced when you have a pool of experience surrounding them in every possible direction. Rohit, Ishan, SKY, David and Pollard all have the huge experience (David due to his big exposure across worldwide leagues). With all of this, it makes perfect sense to play Tilak Verma and ease him into the squad and let him flourish. And Rohit-MI have shown in the past that they're open to doing these sort of moves, to build player confidence and let them grow.
I agree on the part of showing trust in the youth has been a hallmark of the setup but this time round, the squad as a whole looks thin. We need Rohit to fire. The repeat of 2018 imo, where we ended up building a mediocre squad and then fixed it in 2019 by getting the likes of Qdk, Lynn. I do have the confidence of Verma being the next big thing but don't have enough confidence in us qualifying this time round.

FWIW, the entire cricinfo panel feels RR should use Buttler as a finisher and that panel includes two test cricketers, including a very successful former test and IPL captain and coach.

CSK have planned for the auction for 2022 while MI have planned for 2025.

Interesting auction.

I think we turned around great today. We have some great buys and some great returnees. Love that we got Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav. Shivam Mavi, Sheldon Jackson, Rana will be so important for our future. Great to see Nabi in the mix as he can be a great asset.

Looks like our lineup

  1. V.Iyer
  2. Hales
  3. Nitish Rana
  4. Jinx
  5. S.Iyer
  6. Russel
  7. Shivam Mavi
  8. Narine
  9. Southee
  10. Yadav
  11. Varun Chakravarthy

Really? Even after Day 2 proceedings, you think CSK didn't try to build for the future?

I think they covered a lot of ground today than yesterday. This time they'll be forced to give chances to some of their new picks and I think when the likes of Rayudu, Uthappa, Dhoni and Bravo ease out in the next few years, the nucleus of the side will slowly but surely tilt. They haven't gone all out to change the nucleus all at once, as that will mean a very turbulent/shaky few years.

I'd play Nabi over Hales and Rahane opening with Iyer at 3. Really great steals at the end by KKR.

I feel Nabi will play in place of Narine since he was out of touch. Getting Umesh Yadav back gave me a little sigh of relief as we had no Indian bowlers.

I'm going to make a XI of the best unsold players. Won't be limiting my OS as all of the good Indian players are (understandably) sold - the only one I considered to slide in was Ishant.

1. :aus: :wkb: Ben McDermott
2. :aus: :bat: Aaron Finch
3. :nzf: :bat: Colin Munro
4. :eng: :bat: Dawid Malan

An auction of a different type here. Pretty surprised with Punjab's strategy here- they actually did well and have a squad that looks good on paper(might be a first after a long long time).

The only disappointing sale for me- Rajwardhan Hangarkegar-poor guy- career over! CSK's (read Dhoni)reluctance to play newbies, is baflfing enough- pretty sure he is going to warm the benches the entire season.

Tilak Varma is your man.
Ever since I saw him in U-19, I knew he was one for the future. Was surprised he didnt get many chances until now.

He was tremendous! I know some people had issues with his reluctance to keep things moving, but he did mention that this was in the interest of the players that he wanted to get them the best possible prices.

He also brought in some entertainment to his work.

Humourous, definitely! But, I felt Charu gave too much time to teams. Understand it was his intention that players get the best deal, however, he seemed to focus on certain IPL franchisees, which wouldn' have gone down too well with many.

Best Deal of the Auction:
Rassie van der Dussen. I think RR picked some great names- smart picks and I feel they could very well be a title contender here.

Best Team of the Auction:
Mumbai- they started weirdly, but they got the right picks. They got back their core, they have some names for the future( sure starters in the XI) and might possibly be a force to reckon with for at least 3 years.

Worst Deal of the Auction:
Rahul Tewatia- You cannot pick a player based on 1 lone outing in the IPL. Tewatia has done nothing of value post that innings.

Worst Team of the Auction:
Jointly- Gujarat and CSK. Gujarat didnt seem to have a clue on their overall strategy. They left the keepers until the very end( okay, could have been strategic); the picks of Tewatia, Aaron, Miller and Vijaya Shankar leave much to be desired here. CSK- one may argue they got back the core- but it is an ageing core. Bit surprised they left out Raina in the scheme of things. After splurging on Chahar, they went after some 'okay' picks. Conway, Dube, Deshpande? Seriously! The rest are simply fillers- likes of Jagadeeshan, really pity him- hardly gets chances at the franchisee( hope to not see another Baba Aparajith here)

Captaincy Picks:
This is majorly directed at KKR, RCB & PBKS who were on the lookout for captains. I think these teams have done well in terms of picking their squads and also have a few options to look at here. Shreyas Iyer- most certainly will lead KKR. Expect Rana/Rahane to act as deputy here.

RCB- It will be a toss up between Faf and DK. My bet is firmly on DK cause he will most likely play every game as the lead keeper. Faf as captain is not a bad option, but remember this is the first season after a mega auction. Teams will need time to get their footing right.

PBKS- Mayank Agarwal is their best bet. I wouldnt be surprised though if they want to look at Bairstow. However, anyone other than these 2 means Punjab will be acting like Punjab.

Pick one and only one
Rajasthan have been dead to me since the comical pe of Buttler, Stokes, Archer two years ago.

I disagree about a CSK. They lost 3 players from the XI that won the final: Du Plessis, Thakur and Hazlewood. With some re-jigging of their overseas players setup they can easily replace the two bowlers and improve the batting with Pretorius, Jordan, Milne, Santner and Conway. Most other teams are looking at one or two places in a starting XI where there's going to be an unknown or unproven element. Although competition for places, isn't a bad thing.

I think MI are best placed for the transition while Delhi will always be in pole position in this particular cycle with the Indian core they retained. I think CSK are in for a world of trouble as early as this year and most certainly from the next.
