Indian Premier League - General Discussion

So probably the Titan's XI would be

Gill
Roy
Shankar
Saha
Wade/Miller
Pandya
Tewatia
Rashid
Sai Kishore
Fergie
Shami

I do not think that is a weak lineup. They defo would have liked a good middle order Indian batter but I think that XI can win you matches.

An auction of a different type here. Pretty surprised with Punjab's strategy here- they actually did well and have a squad that looks good on paper(might be a first after a long long time).

The only disappointing sale for me- Rajwardhan Hangarkegar-poor guy- career over! CSK's (read Dhoni)reluctance to play newbies, is baflfing enough- pretty sure he is going to warm the benches the entire season.

Ever since I saw him in U-19, I knew he was one for the future. Was surprised he didnt get many chances until now.

Humourous, definitely! But, I felt Charu gave too much time to teams. Understand it was his intention that players get the best deal, however, he seemed to focus on certain IPL franchisees, which wouldn' have gone down too well with many.

Worst Team of the Auction:
Jointly- Gujarat and CSK. Gujarat didnt seem to have a clue on their overall strategy. They left the keepers until the very end( okay, could have been strategic); the picks of Tewatia, Aaron, Miller and Vijaya Shankar leave much to be desired here. CSK- one may argue they got back the core- but it is an ageing core. Bit surprised they left out Raina in the scheme of things. After splurging on Chahar, they went after some 'okay' picks. Conway, Dube, Deshpande? Seriously! The rest are simply fillers- likes of Jagadeeshan, really pity him- hardly gets chances at the franchisee( hope to not see another Baba Aparajith here)

On Rajvardhan - I humbly disagree. CSK is not a team that normally goes behind U-19 stars. The fact that they went very strongly behind Rajvardhan and staving off serious competition from Mumbai Indians, tells me that they look at him as another 'Ruturaj Gaikwad' investment. Before IPL 2020 started, the owner N Srinivasan and the CEO (Kasi) definitely said that they see Ruturaj as a long term prospect for the team. The 'spark' controversy being tied to Ruturaj was more due to the fact that he caught COVID and post COVID, he took extra time to get going and all the added pressure of a floundering season can easily get to him. Overall that 2020 season was a bad season and Dhoni's comments should not be taken in a long term context.

I was disappointed on Day 1 after they went behind the usual suspects of Bravo, Rayudu and Uthappa. I felt that they might do pretty much the same on Day 2. But on Day 2, CSK made some real good buys (including the one of Rajvardhan). They went for a 21 yr old international, Theekshana. They went for a literal unknown, Prashant Solanki (when they could've continued their same old strategy and picked Karn Sharma). They also made some smart picks in Devon Conway and Adam Milne (two good NZ picks, possibly with inputs from Fleming). Also Dwaine Pretorius sounds a pretty good bowling allrounder option (batting S/R of 140, and 109 wickets at 8.13 ECO). Chahar was expensive, but he was expected to go for big bucks and before this auction, Chahar was also earmarked as a possible retention. If MSD wasn't retained, Chahar would've been retained for 12 cr. He got 2c more, and that brings us to the MSD question.... Well MSD the mastermind and MSD the keeper hasn't made even his staunchest critics feel that 12 cr is too much. I've been reading up a lot on social media since the retentions were announced, and apart from a few handfuls, nobody else feels MSD got too much money.

I know you and @LiveLoveABD have differing inputs on CSK squad and I respect that (you guys and me have been having a lot of common opinions in the past few years), but I am cautiously optimistic that CSK have struck a balance between current legs and some future picks.

P.s: Just saw on Ashwin's latest auction review YT video, where he talks about how Simarjeet Singh is a slippery/cranky fast bowler who hits 140+ very easily and rattled DC players in their nets last year... He also said that DC were very keen on selecting him in their squad to have as a backup. They didn't eventually go behind him though, but from Simarjeet's stats, he looks a promising prospect and he's 24. Definitely CSK have selected speed options over spin, which they normally do. They've went light on the spin department this year, putting all their hopes of Jadeja, Ali, Santner, Solanki and Theekshana.

On Gujarat's wooden spoon, gotta say its going to be a hell of a ride out there- Nehra ji as Head Coach +Hardik as captain! The team lacks cohesiveness and feel they may have some trouble getting started here.

Btw, does anyone know whats the format for the IPL? Plenty of talk of a 2 group tournament doing the runds these days.

Chennai social media going bonkers over the non-selection of Suresh Raina and the selection of Maheesh Theekshana (politically sensitive selection; considering the Sri Lankan - Eelam conflict and Tamil Nadu's emotional attachment towards Eelams).

Frankly,, its so idiotic that folks are not able to get over the attachment towards Raina. It sure is a sad moment as Raina has been Mr. IPL and a huge asset for the franchise over years, but honestly his downfall in these past 2 years has been perplexing. He was not even invested mentally in the game. Makes a weird decision to quit international cricket on the same day as MSD, doesn't play enough competitive cricket, though he posts a lot of fitness videos he looked half as fit as he was in his peak days, etc. I am happy they atleast let him go, even though I wanted them to let go of Bravo and Rayudu also. Maybe he might associate with the franchise in the future on the support staff, but maybe not considering it has all panned out.

It has to be, right? Cant play the usual "play all other teams home and away in a round robin format". With 10 teams, it has to be split up.

5 teams in a group, play twice against teams in the group and once each for the other group and twice against one in the other group. Exactly like 2011. A hybrid table and top 4 qualify for the playoffs.

If I understood it correctly, 15 matches per team?

And how does the "twice against one in the other group " gets decided?

The ten teams are divided into two groups of five. In the group stage, each team plays 14 games: facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times. A random draw was used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.

Each team plays the team in the same row and the same column twice, and all others once. For instance, Deccan chargers will play Chennai Super Kings and the other Group A teams twice but the other teams from Group B (Kolkata Knight Riders, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals) only once. Similarly Kochi Tuskers Kerala will play Delhi Daredevils and the other Group B teams twice but all other teams from Group A only once.

I just hope play offs are not set on points. Top 2 from both the group should qualify for Play Offs. If I remember correctly, 3 teams from Group B qualified and 1 from Group A based on overall points. It completely defeats the grouping stage's point.

Play off

  1. Group A 1st vs Group B 1st
  2. Group A 2nd vs Group B 2nd
  3. Eliminator - Loser of the 1st match vs Winner of the second match.
  4. Finals - Winner of 1st match vs Winner of Eliminator.
This way we can keep the same format. This way the winner of both groups get a chance to be in finals twice.

I am a huge Raina fan and I believe in supporting people when they are down but he is living in a clown's world if he expects to be picked by any franchise which he is as mentioned in an interview with him. There are unbelievable number of cricketers in India busting their nuts to get a 10L contract in the IPL while he just wants to play IPL and do nothing on the domestic circuit. Cricket has given him a lot and it's good to give life back and not just expect life to keep giving. He has also just lost his dad so he is in a miserable space right now so it's not fair to judge him either. Let's see where he is at in a year.
