Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Buttler's omission is a very weird one. Is it because of his England association? He is not even that old. 34 in today's modern day game is pretty young. RR went for two Indian wicketkeepers (Samson and Jurel). Could've easily kept Buttler for Jurel since Buttler is also a keeper and as a batter, Buttler is a 50x bigger impact than Jurel. There is something else than what meets the eye.

I don't think there's too much to read into here - why use an international spot with retention on a wicketkeeper when you have Sanju Samson and Jurel competing for the gloves?

I wish that instead of paying Ruturaj 18 crores, they should have put him at 14 crores and given the remaining to MSD (since the retention money can be distributed in any which way among the retained players)! CSK's retention money distribution should have been ideally like this:

Jadeja - 16 crores
Ruturaj - 14 crores
Pathirana - 13 crores
Dube - 12 crores
Dhoni - 10 crores

Total: 65 crores
Purse Left: 55 crores

If they had shown that MSD was paid way more than 4 crores, this "MSD as uncapped player" thing wouldn't have looked that awkward. MSD deserves 10+ crores easily even today, as he is the FACE OF THE IPL! When the league bends backwards to ensure that he chooses to play, you know that the MAN IS FRIGGIN' ABOVE THE IPL! If you read social media and see what people say when asked "would MSD be pursued enough if he is sent into auction today", fans of all other franchises are falling over each other to say that he will be hotly pursued by every other franchise even at this age because of the brand value he brings, the seats that he will fill across stadiums and the tactical mind he brings to the team.

I'm sorry but I beg to differ. Yes he might be the sharpest minds around but there are not many teams who can afford a player who can bat no more than 2 overs and isn't a 100% behind the wickets. It's the plethora of all-round talent that CSK have had is what has kept MSD still into the mix. Having the guys like Jadeja, Kedar, Raina, Moeen, Bravo etc. over the years helped the team's balance and meant that they had plenty of batting depth to be able to accommodate Dhoni just as a specialist keeper while his batting (if it came good) being a bonus. That wouldn't work for say teams like RR, RCB or GT so yeah team balance has lot to do with his long career. The credit here actually goes to CSK's management who have managed to bag the marquee players around Dhoni so he can forget about his batting prowess and be a full time player-mentor of the team.

Respectfully disagree! RR, RCB and GT will easily give an arm to have MS Dhoni in their XI. I mean come on, RCB with their Chinnaswamy and Dhoni walking out towards the end with his bat even for a few overs or having him keep behind the wickets to guide their bowlers who often struggle to defend in that tiny stadium? Kohli will say "I will play for free; give me Mahi Bhai". Even Mumbai Indians with all their star power, will easily give an arm to have MS Dhoni. You'd think that they might not need him with Rohit, Bumrah, SKY, Hardik, but they dont have a keeper and they will gladly take a 43 year old keeper who is not at 100% if that guy is MS Dhoni!

His batting has moved towards creating the maximum impact and it will work for any team. But primarily, any team will want him for that "tactical / sharp mind" alone (which you clearly mention). And the brand value - I mean, RR and Samson will gladly let MS Dhoni keep wickets while Samson places himself in the fielding position. This is not anywhere near being "pompous"! Even when he is not 100%, he is extremely valuable for his tactical mind and sheer bossy stardom.

MSD is finished! His past reputation precedes him. Teams might pay to have him in the backroom staff. However, looking at the way the IPL has evolved over the past few years, teams would invest in someone who can have an impact and make them win games.

I agree with @Fenil here when he says that CSK could afford to keep him in the mix owing to their team balance. Furthermore, CSK lacked and still lacks the succession planning post MSD. They can't drop for this reason + the team won't have any superstar to rely upon after him.

If MSD was in any other franchise,he wouldn't have been playing for so long. Lastly one forgets that MSD is a Vice President at India Cements, the company that owns a majority of CSK's shares. Vested interests?

Respectfully speaking - I sense hypocrisy here. On one hand, I see comments like "IPL is rigged; they go behind who has/brings the most money" etc etc etc. But then the same people say "teams would invest in someone who can have an impact and win them games". Which is it?

MSD even at this time, can have impact and win games. Just by standing there behind the stumps. He is not yet proven in the backroom staff area for teams to buy him for that role. Teams will buy him just for his acumen behind the stumps and the tactical leadership/inputs that he provides from there. His batting role has evolved and even with that evolvement, he will easily fill many team's gaps and most importantly provide value to every team's brand value.

The world knows it, IPL and BCCI knows it. Franchises know it. They went through the franchises meeting this year and came out of it with the "uncapped player rule" being brought back. Everyone knew why this rule was coming back. As much as I didnt support it being used on MSD, it was only because he was worth more right now and 4c is too less for him.

As far as I understood, the 4cr is just an on paper figure to be deducted from the team’s purse. CSK are free to pay whatever they want to MSD

Why not get him in as a mentor directly? It will free up one spot for a player who can have more impact than MSD. I dont buy that he has evolved over the years- in fact, he has regressed and that did cause a problem. The game has to an extent moved on from MSD's time. If his inputs are valuable, he can do so with CSK(or anyone else) by not taking up a playing XI position.

I agree, in his day, he was good, but he too has too accept that he has become slow. While there's not much riding on his performance (except for hard core fans of his) + his performance isnt linked to his spot in the XI, he needs to look at the game a tad differently.

Those are my initial thoughts to be very honest however I guess the team management thinks that he will be in a better position to give tips to the players while being in the middle which he cannot do say in the middle of an over. That said, it will be interesting to see for how long the balance of CSK XI allows Dhoni to be drafted in as a playing mentor. One of the reasons why they have been hanging on to the all-rounders - to free the load from Dhoni the batsman. On a completely different note, I feel it's high time that CSK looked for other options as a keeper too. Realistically, they cannot be having Dhoni as a player for more than couple of years max. The fitness issue will creep up.
