Not really. It'd make the news and a blow over in a week or so. You're forgetting that American, English, Japanese and recently Polish citizens have been beheaded on the internet in the surrounding countries of India (I know this doesn't happen in India, and comparing India to a place like Afghanistan is ridiculous, but it's all the same to the general American public), I think that's a little worse than a bashing.

Maybe the mentality in the West towards guests is just different. In India if your guests are treated badly, it's a poor reflection of our hospitality.

Yeah, that's true everywhere and is a fair point. For instance, the guest to your house is always treated nicely, it's a global custom. However, when the "guests" are people in a city with a population just under 4 million, it's a little hard to keep track of them.

Can you please tell me how you would like these students to be treated? Do you want them to have a personal convoy and Australian Government officials following them around, catering to their needs? Do you want the Government to hire a martial arts expert to keep them safe from thugs?

Of course you don't. NEWSFLASH: AUSTRALIA CONTAINS RACIST THUGS... Just like every bloody other country on Earth.

Was this in anyway a good thing what happened? Of course not, it's absolutely disgraceful and the people who did it are scum. Saying the boys who were attacked should "harden up" is completely laughable and childish, I'm with you on that Sohum.

However, it does not represent how the Australian's treat their guests and all these claims you guys are making about how "Western Civilization" treat their guests are completely missing the point. A few rotten eggs are attacking these boys, not Western Civilization.

It is not an attack on your country or your pride, it is just some thugs attacking innocent people. It's got nothing to do with National dignity or custom, it's just some thugs attacking innocent people.

When you look at this in context, it means very little. Look at the statistics of Melbourne. It's one of the most ethnically diverse major cities on Earth. It's known as one of the safest major cities around, and Australian law (the extremely strict Gun control) furthers my point here.

And I think it's hilarious how all of a sudden we have a full scale debate on whether or not Indians are safe in Australia, but no one has mentioned the hundreds of white people who are bashed out of their mind on a Friday night out the front of a pub somewhere in Australia. Let me tell you, it's a lot worse and a lot more common than attacks on Indians.

I agree jordox. There's heaps of Muslims, Indians, Poms, Greeks, Italians, Chinese in Melbourne. It is pretty safe as well, people go on about the Melbourne underground(underbelly) but it really isn't a big deal.

@) Sohum - yes, it is racist and all and those guys were targeted, but I don't think it is fair to ask Australia or the Government to protect the Indians. I mean, they are doing their best to ensure the safety of everyone and all immigrants, but it would be wrong to ask them to put an extra effort into protecting Indians. It wouldn't be fair. If the Indians are being perceived as weak, maybe we should do something to change that image. As it is -and we don't know for sure- these attacks were carried out as Indians are being viewed as an easy target. What do you expect the government to do to change that? If the attacks were based around chasing the Indians out or hatred to them, then it is reasonable to ask the Government to step in and punish those involved in race crimes with extra severity. They will, presumably, catch and punish the teens involved in these attacks and try their best to make places safer for all students, but to make it safer particularly for Indian kids because they are perceived as weak is wrong.

Tom may have worded it harshly, but it is true in essence. If we are being perceived as weak, we have to work to changing our image. We can't go running to the government for protection. In the case of the students, seeing as they feel unsafe now, they can always carry around a weapon or something. Walk in a gang. Take self defence classes.

Why are you acting like the Australian government need to make changes to keep Indian's safe? Imports? Its as if Australia has imported people to work for them? These students come to Australia on their own wish. So they are guests. Guests always deserve more respect and hospitality. It was a racist attack and it shouldnt happen, thats all. I cant understand how some guys here say that "those students were in the wrong place at the wrong time". ITS JUST NOT DONE! According to a report, those guys chanted "lets bash those curry eaters" before they attacked these students. Thats damn racist!
