India's Tour of South Africa Dec 21 - Jan 22

Sad that nobody is talking about the delivery that Chahal bowled today. Nearly the same delivery that Warne bowled to get Gatting out bowled.

That could've easily been the wicket of ODI Cricket history if only that had no bounced a couple of centimetres less.

Also Ashwin’s beautifully flighted delivery that nearly got de Cock but was messed by Pant.

Been that kind of a tour. I am sure the Indians are waiting for the flight back home at this point.

Perhaps few fans obviously are but the players are trying to learn few lessons from this experience.

Ashwin is a legend in Test Cricket but he keeps on proving that he isn't cut for ODIs. The same thing with Bhuvi.

Honestly not used to an Indian ODI side that is so quiet. Not even an attempt to sledge ... No firing up the bowlers ... Just deafening silence.

Great opening stand by the Proteas. Impressed with the way they played spin this tour (even though conditions not really suited for spin - hasn't stop us from failing miserably the previous India tour in SA - Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav knocked SA over then)

Indian white ball cricket is exactly where it was in red ball cricket when Dhoni handed over to Kohli.

All the ingredients are ready but the team badly needs a new direction and a sort of culture shock. We badly need a leader who's going to come out and say "right, I don't care how who plays, but this is how we will play."

We are playing really safe right now and it reflects in our selection. We need to give people like Deepak Chahar, Ravi Bishnoi a go. Venky Iyer being picked on the basis of 7 IPL games is a disgrace to the India cap and a high level joke. I've not seen much of Venky and he might be a great cricketer in waiting but his rise is a joke. Shreyas Iyer playing ahead of SKY is another joke. Ashwin being anywhere near a blue jersey is just a reflection of how "safe" our template has become. His fielding is awful.

Credit to Rahul today. I thought his fields were good and he didn't do much wrong!

Tbh I don't think Ashwin is a bad choice for T20Is considering his economy is just a little over 6.

But I don't think he is an ODI bowler. He averages somewhere around 34 with the ball with economy of close to 5 and a half.

Let us try finding better options than Ashwin:-

These are the List-A records
1) Mayank Markhande- 79 wickets @22.88, Economy- 4.57
2) Rahul Chahar- 67 wickets @25.86, Economy- 5.12
3) Shreyas Gopal- 77 wickets @23.38, Economy- 5.22
4) Axar Patel- 169 wicket @29.10, Economy- 4.27
5) Dharmendrasingh Jadeja (no he isn't related to Ravindra Jadeja :p)- 80 wickets @28.17, Economy- 4.66

These are atleast 5 option to replace Ashwin. Maybe if Chakravarthy works on his bowling in a way that he can restrict the scoring and also picks regular wickets he also adds to the list.
I expected Shreyas Gopal to burst on the scene especially after his performances for Karnataka few seasons ago but sadly he faded away too soon.

Axar is nice backup for Ravi Jadeja. (He is like the clone version) and there is our favourite Krunal Pandya as well.

Not sure about others the selectors have their task cut out for sure.

And the lack of season will start to take a toll now for sure when team performs like this the options to choose are limited.

KL getting ODI captaincy without any List A captaincy experience is also a joke. He doesn’t inspire and his tactics are insipid at best.

India needs a burst of young blood at the top (in ODI's) and the more senior pros need to start manning the middle overs. I am sorry but Rohit has to get out of his comfort zone and bat in the middle, because he is a senior pro and should be used to the pressure situations by now.

With the World Cup 2023 in India, we will need a Sehwag-Sachin combination at the top like how it happened in 2011. Ideal candidate for that to happen, is Prithvi Shaw who is the Sehwag. According to me, the guy who can be the Sachin type player (i.e. have multiple gears in his arsenal and play a stable hand) is a Shubman Gill or an Ishan Kishan or a Ruturaj Gaikwad. To me, Dhawan is over and its time we moved past him. Lets say that Gill and Shaw are picked. One down should be Rohit, like what he used to do with Mumbai Indians. At No. 4 will be the best batsman of the side, Virat Kohli. At No. 5 should be KL Rahul and at No. 6 should be Rishabh Pant. I dont think Shreyas Iyer or a Suryakumar Yadav or a Venkatesh Iyer have a chance. India needs to focus on their middle order and have players with multi-gears in that area. And when the middle order is packed with Rohit-Kohli-Rahul, the young openers will play a carefree game at the top and more often than not give rollicking starts that puts us in high gear! Rahul and Dhawan seem to play the safe game because back in their minds, the fragility of the middle order plays a role. The best way to counter this is to inject young blood at the top, fill the middle with senior pros.

Somehow Deepak Chahar should be given more opportunities with Bhuvi on the decline. Shardul will always be there for his ability to pick crucial wickets and his batting rise. Once Jadeja is back, he will take his spot in the XI without battling a eyelid. Its the second spinner that India need to tackle. I also agree that Ashwin shouldn't be the guy there. Either Chahal continues or we bring in Ravi Bishnoi or even give Rahul Tewatia a persistent go. I cant see both Jadeja and Axar playing together.

India's gameplay needs to change, and RIGHT NOW.

The Selection Committee needs to be sacked with immediate affect.

The debacle of WT20 and now this.

Right from Squad selection and Kohli handling thing they messed up big time. They never really got the squad right from the WT20 selection was poor and the current squad performance is a reflection of it.

Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar out of nowhere are selected in the ODI setup with the latter being the most overrated bowler in Indian cricket history his selection in 2019 WC Semifinal over Shami still pisses me off.

Random out of the blue picks like Varun the mystery chakraborty and Venkatesh Iyer they might turn out to be good in future but selection on basis of IPL is questionable.

The whole decision of sacking Kohli from ODI captaincy was unasked for especially when Kohli wanted to lead till 2023 WC.

6th bowler?

Why on earth was Shreyas given the ball in the last over? This is mind boggling. Absolutely ridiculous from KLR. You are losing, doesnt mean you toss the ball to a batsman. Heck, expect Rishab Pant to start bowling in the 3rd ODI.
He throws in the towel visibly when things aren’t going well and was evident even in the 2nd Test in that defense of 240. Not good.
