India's tour of West Indies June 2011

Ask Andy Roberts to come in today's generation and bowl. He will be spanked hard and wouldn't get even half the respect that he has got by bowling in those generation of wickets and in that mindset of batsmen to not go after the bowling like they do in these days. Its incredibly tough being a bowler today, and Roberts need to understand it. I am not a die hard fan of Munaf, but I understand why he has given up speed for more control.

Not a bit, but big time! This's exactly what I was talking about. Had it not been for those 4 spinner friendly tracks, who knows what could have happened? Even a 5-0 whitewash win to the WI was on the cards. Very disappointed with the curators tbh. That said, I'm not offending the Indians one bit. Its just that they haven't had the traditional West Indian wickets to taste this time round.

Are watching this match or just watching rain fall over Rose Bowl? Or just wrote cause you wanted to? India are 110 for 3. I said a bit and it was a bit as it was only Dhawan.

He will now say the pitch has eased out and has become good for batting.:rolleyes

Just noticed Badri has been dropped for this match! How stupid? Of all people, he deserved one more chance to resurrect himself. Why cant they rest Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli or Raina himself (Harbhajan can captain in that case; although no Indian captain rests himself) and let Badri play out the series? Just watch Badri not play a single test this tour and completely dumped altogether.

World class bowlers succeed anywhere and in any conditions. Just ask Dale Steyn. Andy Roberts was world class and would have been held in just as high regard in today's generation.

Munaf gave up speed for more control because he is not fit enough to keep his speed up for more than a few matches.

You do realize I posted that comment at 8:24 IST when India were struggling to gather runs in the first PP? :rolleyes

Fast Bowling

^I never said they did not bowl on line and length. If you bowl a 150 KPH delivery at even a tailender's pad, its likely to get tickled away to fine leg for a boundary. I was just intending to inform that extra pace is one of the key weapons in any genuinely good quickie's arsenal. A case in point is Zaheer Khan. He is an exceptionally good bowler in world cricket presently but will he ever be bracketed with Waseem? He has the late movement, control, and both kind of swings ala Waseem but he misses the key ingredient of pace that will ensure he will always be rated far below Akram.

Pakistan has a good fast bowling culture. Medium Pacers are discouraged, you either bowl quick or you spin the ball.

In India and Bombay especially, bowlers are third-class citizens of Cricket. On Club Grounds in Bombay, the Pitches are watered endlessly and rolled by little rolling pins, to make sure the ball doesn't bounce or travel fast.

I bowl in the Nets when i go to Bombay, you get a frown from the batsmen if you bowl a bouncer. When I practice with a Pakistan team in the US, all the players encourage me to hit the batsman with a bouncer. And they laugh and clap when the batsman gets hit in the nets. So the mentalities are different in the two countries. One enjoys fast bowling and the other is dreadfully scared of it.

Even Sanjay Manjrekar said he grew up being scared of fast bowling. Maybe now with helmets and all sorts of guards the fear will go.

And West Indies same problem continues. 22 overs and 70 runs. India's total of 251 is really good one after being 30 for 2.Kohli has really cemented his place for the first side for the first test.he has the Kirsten factor behind him too as Gary before leaving said thaythat Kohli is the next big thing in test cricket.

Yea India really should have brought Kohli a long wayy back into their test setup. Technically sound, decent puller of the short balls(hello Raina?), outstanding First class averages, enough said I guess. Will be a great addition to the team if he makes the test xi.

This has gone closer then I thought. 41 balls and 65 runs 8 wickets with pollard and russel to come surely West Indies should win this

Hey the pitch has eased out and has become good for batting man!

lol Parthiv, dropped an absolute sitter when Bravo was on single figures!

Darren Bravo is showing all his class now. God knows why was he dropped for the 2nd and 3rd odi?

Based on that small period of play, you were predicting a 5-0 whitewash for WI if they had prepared such wickets throughout the series?:rolleyes

----------

WI have won this match already!!!! There was logic behind Ashwin bowling in the batting powerplay (Ashwin is a good almost specialist powerplay bowler) but where is the logic behind bringing Mishra in that powerplay? Both of them failed, and India have lost this here now.

Edit: Mishra takes Bravo! Still this is meat and drink stuff for Pollard, Russell and Saamy! I feel the match was lost in those two batting powerplay overs by Ashwin and Mishra!

It will be sad to see a 3-2 victory. We needed atleast 4-1. We still lose a point but extremely happy for West Indies Cricket, without Gayle and Chanderpaul and Taylor and Edwards they managed 4 wins out of 10 odis recently against a full strength Pakistan side and half strength Indian side.

I would happily take a 3-2 victory. Remember, we are without 6 of our star ODI players (Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Dhoni and Zaheer) and after the series win, we went even further to give all players their chances. Inspite of all that, this has been good grooming ground for the bench players and a good rest period for the star players. I see only positives for Indian cricket from this series so far.
