Story Ireland Summer 2013: NZ Test - McCullum ton

Haha I thought Aus would be out for more than 430+ runs at least, nice job by Irish now they need to bat well.

Australaia is a very strong team .they currentely rank 2nd place in test cricket

Ireland did a great job there to keep the Aussies down to 278 considering the fact that this is their first Test. Rankin and vd Merwe did an exceptional job with the ball and Wilson with the gloves. Hoping that they bat well.

Okay, will get to work on the next update - been a bit up to my eyeballs in cricket rain delays and dentist appointments.

Bowlers Give Australia Breathing Space

After watching Australia's lineup poke and prod their way to 278, it must have been in the minds of the Irish openers, Porterfield and Stirling, that the track might contain some demons. Porterfield looked calm as he pulled an errant Siddle delivery for four to get Ireland off the mark in the first over, but the relief was short lived: in Pattinson's opening over he had Paul Stirling edging streakily, then cleaned him up with a ball that swung the other way. It was a top quality piece of fast bowling. Joyce joined Porterfield and they tried to knock the openers out of the attack: the first 25 runs included six boundaries and a no ball. However, it was the change bowler that broke the partnership, Ben Hilfenhaus disturbing Joyce's woodwork. Watson claimed the skipper's scalp in the next over, before Niall O'Brien neglected to play at a straight ball and lost his off stump.

At 33 for four, Ireland were staring down the barrel of utter carnage, and it was left to Andrew White and new man Gary Wilson to rebuild. They did so slowly, showing little interest in anything that they didn't absolutely have to play at. The partnership batted for the rest of the day, which was brought forward by a rain shower, and accumulated 74 runs in their unbeaten partnership at a sluggish two runs per over.

The next morning, though, they couldn't continue their resistance falling in quick succession to the pace of Pattinson and spin of Michael Clarke. Now united at the wicket were the chief run scorers in the first ODI, but Kevin O'Brien couldn't complete a third successive international fifty, running himself out for a very scratchy five. Cusack was left with only the tail for company, but Dockrell showed some excellent resolve at number nine.

James Pattinson bowled with pace and aggression.

He stuck around to support the senior man for almost 20 overs, and they added 38 valuable runs to take the score up to 170 before Peter Siddle, so far wicketless, produced a toe-crunching yorker to dispatch of the tail ender. He went straight from one extreme to the other, following up three balls later with a vicious bouncer that the new batsman could only glove to Matthew Wade. There were two balls left in the over, and with Boyd Rankin the new batsmen, conventional wisdom suggested that only one would be necessary. However, to everyone's surprise, he connected with several leg-side swings, nudging the score past 200 before he finally holed out on the boundary.

After his innings, Gary Wilson told journalists that, "160 is about par on this track, against this attack. Anything past that is a bonus, but Australia clearly did very well in their first dig. Also, it is an honour to score my country's first Test fifty, let us hope it is the first of many." Well, Ireland did pass Wilson's figure of 160, but I'd suggest that figure is really about 80 too low to be accurate.

I guess Ireland will be happy to go past 200 here after being 30 odd for 4. Cusack's contribution was vital as Wilson was going well at one end. Looking forward to what Irish bowlers can do now. Aussie batsmen will come hard this time round, I guess.

The top order batsmens should have done better to work on a higher score. Come on Irish bowlers!

Tourists Tumble as Dockrell Turns Test

Trailing by 72 runs after their first innings, the Irish were definitely second favourites to win their d?but Test, but if there was one thing for certain: they would certainly not be giving up without a fight. Will Porterfield clearly decided not to let the Australian openers settle, and chopped and changed the bowling very regularly in the early stages. It paid dividends, and in the eleventh over, third change bowler George Dockrell got one to slide on with the arm and got Cowan to snick one behind. First innings hero Usman Khawaja joined David Warner at number three, but for the second time, the partnership was broken just as it began to look ominous. George Dockrell then proved the old adage that one brings two by bowling an absolute ripper to Michael Clarke that turned square and flew off the outside edge to slip.

The responsibility of rebuilding fell to the stonewalling Khawaja and the strokemaking Watson, and they played with calmness and composure. The score mounted gradually through a combination of drives and back cuts. The partnership passed 50 and the total reached three figures before the tea break on day three. The final over was bowled by Boyd Rankin. The first five deliveries were blocked calmly by Usman Khawaja, but the sixth ball of the over and final ball of the over lifted sharply. The batsman fended it off, but only as far as the keeper who completed an easy catch.

After tea, Porterfield decided to open the bowling with George Dockrell and Kevin O'Brien, and it was to say the least an inspired decision. They each struck in their first over, claiming Watson and Bailey respectively. Dockrell produced another turning delivery that took a faint edge off Watson's bat. Umpire Dharmasena wasn't convinced, but the third umpire was, and Ireland had used the first successful review of the Test match. O'Brien on the other hand bowled a straight ball to the new batsman, and George Bailery just played down the wrong line. Suddenly, Ireland had taken three wickets for two runs and it was anyone's game.

George+Dockrell+England+v+ICC+Combined+XI+9rBxILlj1Sxl.jpg

George Dockrell showed that there is no substitute for genuine class.

This meant that Matthew Wade and Peter Siddle had to try to add as many runs as they could to the total before the wickets ran out so as to give their bowlers a good total to defend. The two lower order players fought as hard as they could, but Matt Wade could do nothing to stop a back of a length ball from keeping low and absolutely shattering the stumps. Nathan Lyon provided little resistance, the Kevin O'Brien produced a yorker to do away with Peter Siddle. The Irish ideally needed the last wicket before the close of play, but Hilfenhaus and Pattinson clung on until the close of play.

George Dockrell, the hero of the day with four for 38, said that he was pleased with how the team had performed. "It was a fantastic effort to get a team as good as Australia to 174 for 9. Hopefully we can keep their lead under 250, because I think that will be chaseable." The last wicket stand lasted one ball in the morning, and the target for Ireland is 247 to win.

Australia Escape With Win Over Ireland

With two days left in their inaugural Test, Ireland needed a just-about-reachable 247 to register a shock victory, and much would depend on Porterfield and Stirling making a good start. Peter Siddle, though, had other ideas, removing ODI star Paul Stirling for a golden duck. He was replaced by Ed Joyce, who seemed more composed, and has 28 first class centuries to his name already. He seemed determined to add a 29th on his Test debut. Both he and Porterfield set about an unhurried pursuit of the target, showing particular respect to James Pattinson who, while conceding less than two runs per over, couldn't break the partnership. Eventually, it took a rank long hop from Peter Siddle to break the deadlock, removing Porterfield for 34.

He was replaced with Andrew White who treated the packed house to a fine display of dead-bat batting. The partnership ticked over at a pedestrian two runs per over. Joyce passed fifty and the total passed 100, with the hosts reaching tea on 115 for two. They certainly had the box seat, and were clawing their way into a commanding position, but it made for dull watching for the spectators in the ground.

After the break, Michael Clarke took the novel move of opening up with his third and fourth seamers. It turned out to be an inspired move as Hilfenhaus removed the solid Joyce in the opening over with a fantastic ball that straightened and trapped him in front of his stumps. Niall O'Brien settled in nicely alongside White, but the latter was removed half an hour later when Watson completed a smart caught and bowled low to his left.

Peter+Siddle+Australia+v+India+Fourth+Test+ei_5mB-2tV2l.jpg

Peter Siddle took three key wickets.

This united both Irish 'keepers, Wilson and O'Brien, but they couldn't make a significant stand with Wilson departing to a corker from Siddle that he was good enough to get a touch on, but only as far as Matthew Wade. The O'Brien brothers added a valuable thirty in partnership to take Ireland to within sixty of the Australians before the senior O'Brien was replaced by Alex Cusack. The Cusack and O'Brien partnership had united successfully in the ODI series; could they repeat the trick?

Well, their partnership added almost forty before Kevin O'Brien tried to hit Nathan Lyon to Anglesey, and got as far as cow-corner. The tail had only to partner Cusack through another 24 runs, but could only get half way before James Pattinson had taken a wicket a catch and a run out to wipe out the resistance.
