Early Days
March 27th, 2008: I heard my letterbox open and in came an envelope. It was 10:30am and I had just woken up to watch the Liverpool-Newcastle game. I took the envelope with me to the dining table as I turned the kettle on. As I was opening the letter, it was odd that there was a Yorkshire Cricket Club Logo on the envelope. I raced through the peeling. Hesitantly I opened the letter. It wrote...
Dear Mr.Saman Khurshid,
Due to your great performances for Caribbean Cricket Club, the Yorkshire Cricket Club are pleased to invite you to our training academy on April 1st, 2008. Our selectors are looking forward to seeing you. We hope to see you on April 1st, 2008.
Yorkshire Cricket Club
What the hell? Ever since I moved to Sheffield from Pakistan in 2004 it has been a great time. For a moment I thought my eyes were deceiving me. I stared at the letter for god knows how long. Suddenly, an alarm sounded. It was the smoke alarm. S*** the kettle. The smoke eventually cleared as I kept on thinking. Back in Pakistan, me and my fellow cousins used to play Cricket in the shearing heat nearly every day. Except on religious days or if the weather was very bad. We had a real laugh! There was no hard-ball though. We used to play on dusty roads with a tape-ball.
In my move to England in May 2004, I decided I had to rise my talent even higher. I joined Caribbean Cricket Club in early 2005 in time for the Season. Despite my English being limited I interacted with my team-mates. Most were Pakistani anyways so it was good. Going in to bat at the number 3 position and 3rd on to bowl I scored regularly in the high 20's-30's and crippled the batting side with my pace and swing. I was on top form.
Now here I am. Being opted to play for Yorkshire Cricket Club. A few steps down from going into the England Cricket Team. Who knows........
