Mickey Arthur Resigns

This article says it was pressure due to the teams performance and transformation and not issues with smith that caused him to resign.

Mickey Arthur's resignation as South Africa's coach came in the wake of increasing pressure from administrators over what they saw as the under-performance of the national team.

Arthur quit in dramatic circumstances on Monday, reportedly following an "irreparable breakdown" in his relationship with Graeme Smith. But a source close to Cricket South Africa denied that a rift had developed between coach and captain.

"This is not a Graeme issue," the source told Cricinfo. "Graeme is not that powerful. It looks ugly because he has been through three coaches (Eric Simons, Ray Jennings and Arthur) and three convenors of selectors, but he is still a young captain."

Instead, it seems official reaction to South Africa's comparative lack of recent success forced Arthur's hand. The team won just one of the six Tests they played in 2009, and drew their home series against England this month.

"Arthur doesn?t handle pressure well at all, and he is facing pressure from a few different sources on a few different issues," the source said. "The board is questioning him on the team's non-performance and on issues like transformation. Even though he has been getting frustrated with these questions, the timing of his resignation is strange."

However, Smith's vice-captain, Ashwell Prince, disagreed that South Africa had performed poorly with Arthur at the helm. "He's had five years in the job, and he's taken the team to the top in both the Test and one-day rankings," Prince told Cricinfo. "I wouldn't have thought he would be under pressure to resign."

Despite their consistently high one-day ranking, South Africa have failed to win ICC events and have instead earned a reputation as the most reliable chokers in the game. Prince took a different view. "South Africa haven't done as well as they would have liked in one-day and Twenty20 tournaments, but those events are tough to win," he said.

Whatever the reasons behind Arthur's resignation, a selection dispute doesn't seem to be among them. "I was very surprised," South Africa's selection chief and a former national coach himself, Mike Procter, told Cricinfo. "We had meetings last Tuesday, and there was no hint of anything like this. I didn't have a clue."

South Africa's Test and one-day squads for their imminent tour to India were announced last Monday. Neither squad contained the kind of shock selection that could force a resignation, and Procter said conflicts with Arthur were rare: "He was very good to work with from a selector's point of view. Obviously, we had the odd disagreement over selection, but that's normal."

Prince was equally bemused by Arthur's decision. "For me, it's quite a surprise," he said. "I will miss him, because the team operates like a family. Just the other day we all had Christmas lunch together, along with our wives and children."

Corrie van Zyl, a former South African assistant coach, will take the team to India in a caretaker capacity. The source denied that Vincent Barnes had, as has been reported, been sacked or had resigned as bowling coach.

Kepler Wessels, the former South African captain and Northamptonshire coach, is one of the contenders to replace Arthur in the long-term, as is the former England coach, Duncan Fletcher, who has served the team as a batting consultant in recent seasons. Arthur is reportedly hoping to further his career with an English county.

A big lose before the India series... Hope this does not affect the teams performance.. Do not know much about the new coach.. Proteans Best Of Luck

I just saw this on the news and for a second, I couldn't believe it.

He was the most distinguished coach ever for South Africa and his contribution to the sport of cricket during this period has been nothing short of exceptional.

I hope to see Mickey in action again, soon :)

Now days coaches resign every now and cant tell who will stay who will go...

Cricket Coaching has become a top job now days for the veterans and other experts..take the example of Dave Whatmore....he want's to be a coach doesn't matter which team.

Corrie Van Zyl is only the care taker. He was the SA bowling coach under Bob Woolmer for a long time and also for some time under Graham Ford. He was very succesfull as the freestate eagles coach. He has also coached the SA a side and emerging side. He is currently the high performance guy.

Wasn't much coverage on the spat between Arthur and Smith over here so didn't really expect it. But I don't really follow other teams outside of Australia unless the headlines make the Australian news sites.

There was no indication of a spat till this morning. In fact most though they were pretty close.

Meh...not a good situation, I actually somehow liked Arthur - terrible timing this. I hope Corrie van Zyl gets it (out of the 3 in the running), Kepler is a fag and probably even more boring than Daryll Cullinan (although he wouldnt take Smith's crap) and Jerremy Snape?? Who the hell is he? I used to think he's the physio ffs! haha

In the end I hope they steal Kirsten back...he must be missing home by now and probably took India as far as he can. Would be epic to have him back and finally get Donald in as bowling coach!

All in all I just hope for once we get a management who choose the correct teams! Aka avoid fiasco's like the Nitni inlclusion in the first test against England and the exclusion of Parnell in favour of Harris during the Durban test. Anyone who can come in and rectify the ludicrous team-selections gets my vote. we want best XI's every game, keep your politics for the boardroom and choose the side who stands the best chance of winning!

Wessels might be boring as a commentator but the man knows his cricket and knows the local game inside out.

Kirsten will not come back before world cup 2011.

Also who says Corrie is in the running?? Does he even want the job past the caretaker role?? I like the guy.

I am sure there will be more guys throwing their names into the ring before they pick a succesor. If I were an international coach this would be a pretty good side to coach. Only kallis and boucher getting anywhere close to re retirement. Question marks over the spinner and opener but the rest of the side is in their prime.

someone pointed out that Tom Moody's contract is running out in australia on the bbc. If they could get him full time that would great for them.

though I reckon it's just a matter of time until australia give him the reigns, and he may know that, maybe when ponting steps down they'll freshen things up with a new coach.

I can't believe some people are slamming Arthur. It's a bit like John Buchanan here in Australia. Oversees one of the most successful eras in the country's history and people are falling overthemselves to NOT give him credit at all.

He'll catch on somewhere else if he still has the passion.

Tom did apply for the SA job last time it was up for grabs if I remember correctly. So that wouldn't be that farfecthed.

Not sure about that. I am pretty much sure Kirsten will be with us (India) for the World Cup 2011 (and maybe for more time beyond if we do decently in the WC). Its just one year to go and we wont want to change a coach at this moment and considering Kirsten's relationship with the Indian players and India, I doubt if he would want to leave Indian coaching now (his bringing in of Eric Simmons states that he is quite keen in working more on India's cricket).

Maybe Duncun Fletcher will come, or Wessels would hopefully get tough on some of the senior players, people like Smith seam to have too much power. Ray Jennings would be the best but we kniw that's not going to happen.
