Need For Speed? - What's your opinion...

Hi ritwik,

The current motherboard I have is absolutely wonderful as it cost me only about Rs.5600/- and integrates Creative Sound Blaster + S3 Savage 4 graphics with upto 32Mb memory. I have an additional AGP 4X port + 3 PCI ports for upgradation. It supports a maximum of 1 GB SDRAM. It's the Gigabyte GA-7ZMMH

However its Socket A based and that means you'll have to buy an AMD processor. I have got AMD Duron 1 GHz for about Rs. 3500.

The cabinet (if your's is an AT) you'll have to buy an ATX cabinet which will cost you further Rs. 1200 - 1300/=

That's all. The result is suberb performance boost. You'll be able to play QIII, UT, Serious Sam, FIFA 2002, F1 2001 and all the current crop of games at 1024*768 resolution at High color. That's enough for me at least.

I hope that solves your query. For further needs do contact me. Thanks.

Hi quickfire,
thanks a lot for your info. Can you give me the names of some good hardware sites...so that i could do a bit of personal research.

Cheers.

dont get a motherboard with integrated 3d graphics. that is the biggest mistake you will make. What happens when you need to run games at a higher resolution in the future? You will need to upgrade you graphics card via an agp slot. A motherboard with integrated graphic does not have an agp slot so there fore you will still have change your mother board for one with an agp slot and then buy a suitable graphics card, if you have to do this you will be spending double the amount of money. You should get a motherboard with an agp slot.

You are right Pachino. But the motherboard quickfire has got has an integrated S3 graphics card [b:post_uid0]and[/b:post_uid0] an agp4X slot. That way he can plug in the latest geforce 3 or Ati Readeon 8500 without any trouble.
I am looking for expandiblity in any motherboard i get, ideally with 4 pci and an 4X agp with 4usb ports and 4 ram slots.

I am sorry to say that but it seems that you're wrongly informed. Not all motherboards are like that. Take mine for example, it has got integrated graphics along with an AGP 4X slot. That's what you'll need if you don't have too much money to spend at a time. Spend your money in installments. Like the idea?

And Ritwik,

I think you've read that my motherboard has 3 PCI slots. For most of us we never need any expansion slots. Two will do a lot for us and that too if we ever need a better sound card (than the integrated Creative Sound Blaster) and any kind of a TV tuner card. Well, it's your own decission. If you can, please wait for the AGP 8X to arrive. It will simply be stunning (of course, at an unbelievably higher cost).

Bye!!

Hi quickfire,
AGP 8x??Well its going to be priced simply beyond my reach in the near future.Anyway, its expected to arrive in 2003 and i really can't wait till now...perhaps 2 or 3 more months. But the biggest problem with AGP8X is many of its chipsets are NOT [b:post_uid0]backwards compatible with AGP4x cards{like the geforce3} and hence i will have to invest a huge amount of money, first on an AGP8X motherboard and than for an AGP8X card.[/b:post_uid0]

Ritwik,

So you wanna upgrade within the next two - three months. That's great! Now tell me which processor you wanna have (AMD or same old Intel). That will decide upon most of the factors. I think the current CPU you have is not fast enough. You should upgrade it as soon as possible. The RAM should be replaced as well (you should decide on whether to go for SDRAM or the costly RDRAM and DDR) but I must tell you don't run behind those magazine hype. The SDRAM can support upto 512MB which I suppose is not even available in the market. IF we get two of them, they will solve all our problems at the most affordable rate. So, why go for a DDR or RDRAM? Correct me on this if I am wrong.

Well, we'll discuss more later when I get to know your answers on the above ?s.

Hi quickfire,
i will have to update quite a lot of things ,my pc is getting outdated. But i will do it in installments as i don't have much cash to spare right now.I have to upgrade my ram, motherboard, processor and graphics urgently.I think first i will update my ram to atleast 256mb sdram100mhz from the current 64mb.By the way, what hard disk you have?

<span style='color:#000000:post_uid0'>hi remi10,
surely you could have read through this thread to know "wassup"</span>

Hi ritwik,

I have a Seagate 10.2 GB HDD. You haven't yet let me know which processor you intend to buy?

hi quickfire,
i am not much sure about the processor now...but i am leaning towards AMD as they give great performance at much much lower prices than Intel.
