Ricky Ponting will stay as Captain, there's little doubt about that.
He's one of the most successful Australia's had, but in saying that,
if he were to lose that position, Shane Warne would be my #1 pick.
I can't think of anybody else that would be good, except Gilchrist.

Anyone can be successfully when you have the team Ponting has. The question is can he perform when the pressure is on. From the Ashes obviously not. I don't know if this is actually him captaining as we don't see that flair which Ponting usually has. He has a good cricket brain, he just ain't using it.

Ponting will stay on as captain of the side ..i dont hinkthe aussies would replace him.
But you never know..steve waugh lost his captaincy when aussies failed to make it to the VB series final in 2002.

If changed i feel gilchrist will be the best choice.
Gilly should have infact replaced waugh (he was v-c) that time.
Warne is too well known for his off field antics.

Though langer as a test skipper would not be a bad choice.

But in the near future i see clarke as the next aussie skipper.

I don't think Ponting will be dropped either. Unlike Waugh, Ponting has quite a few years left in him.
