The crowds have been dreadful so far, was watching some track and field and there was next to no one even for the night session. That isn't looked upon kindly when going for your Olympic bid.
Hmm, I agree. I don't think it's an issue of being able to hold the olympics in India. I think India could easily step it up. I think that this media scrutiny is doing a great deal. It is making us look at administrative forces, safety, durability, hygiene, presentation and so much more from much closer quarters. I think that it will go a long way towards ensuring that a debacle of a similar level doesn't occur again because India will be aware that they cannot afford to slip up twice, especially when that second time is the Olympics (hypothetically).
However, the bigger issue, and I feel the one that has been undermined amidst all the controversy is that nobody really cares about athletics in India. None of this would have ever happened if it was the Cricket World Cup (even if they did build some sort of athletes village instead of housing them in hotels). Athletics gets some media coverage if an Indian wins a medal, but it doesn't really capture the attention of many. The Olympics is a huge event and while I think that it would and should fill up for an event as big as that, I don't think it would be worth the risk as it puts the Olympics, a prestigious event, in a bad light.
