England started in the opposite way to which New Zealand did they stuck around and fought for runs, both batsman Cook and Straus were producing quality strokes and had no look of losing their wicket at all, they both managed to bring up 50.
then it was Straus who was run out by a wonderful piece of fielding by the captain Daniel Vettori at Mid on whilst the batsman were looking for a short cheeky run, The score at 159 when the opening pair parted.
Cook the other Opener was batting really solid all day looking 100 dollars, passed 50 with ease and entered the 90's with a bundle of confidence a single and a 2 pushed him to 93 then a straight drive for 4 off Oram moved his total onto 97, that stroke for 4 ended up being his last scoring shot, the next ball the exact same ball from oram this time Cook slighty miss timed it and it popped up to Vettori at mid on and Cook was gone for 97. Really unlucky not to reach 100 after batting so well!
The captain strolled into the arena with the look of not a worry in the world and got straight into it a very attacking mindset, then on 24 he skied one towards square leg were Taylor was fielding got right underneath it then slipped through his hands and Vaughan was given a lifeline, this really hit home hard with Vaughan, he started his innings again basically and was very scratchy but also reached his Half century but only to go out to Chris Martin caught behind
Kevin Pietersen was his usual self hitting everyone all over the park and entertaining the crowd, he was the 4th of the English batsman to reach the milestone of 50, playing some wonderful strokes all day Pietersen is in a rich vein of form! after Vaughan lost his Wicket England were 3/313 and Pietersen not out on 72
