New Zealand's Tour Of India Aug-Sep 2012

Glad Yuvraj is getting a go before the World Cup, will give him and us a chance to see where he really stands. 3 total shockers, Bhaji, Chawla and Balaji, only one really deserves it and that's Balaji, good luck to him. Just realized Rahane didn't make the squad, bit stupid considering they could've left out Rohit Sharma.

I am replying to this in the T20 World Cup thread. :)

Local Media is hinting about Laxmans retirement. There is some announcement being made tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Which channel are you watching ? I m also in Hyderabad and havent really come across anything like that. Though, it would be a pity if he does retire now with everyone behind him to do so. I really hope VVS scores a double ton in one of the Test matches.

I expected this, and its almost happening. But why wait until the end of an inconsequential 2 test series vs New Zealand to retire? If he had retired before this series, one additional youngster could have been groomed into the XI along with Pujara. With New Zealand weakened by the absence of Vettori and with us playing in familiar and highly comfortable Indian conditions, one more young batsman would have got a good chance.

It seems to be a case of trying to go out on 'a high', something that Dravid didn't opt for, which makes him better in the public eye. India should give serious thought to Kumble's proposition of bringing back Mohd. Kaif into the test fold. Kaif is an experienced player and it seems he has been doing well in domestic circuit (I haven't dug up into his recent domestic record; just going by what Kumble says) and also Kaif is a batsman suited for test fold. He was dropped when he didn't do anything wrong.

Agree with you there. Dravid took a sensible decision that time. But, probably the retirements have been discussed among the Top3 here. A lot of people expected Rahul to retire after this series seeing as the last match is to be in BLR. I think there has been some thought put into this entire thing.

As for the return of Kaif- ideally it is a good move to bring him back, for I do not really foresee the likes of Raina or Rohit making it big in the Test arena. With Kaif and Pujara in, I think we have a strongish middle order. And I m not saying it because of the recent failures of Rohit. The fact remains that Kaif is a much better player than RG Sharma.

Talking about Kaif, I just dug up Badrinath's age. He and Kaif are of the same age too (I thought Badri was older than that). Hope Badri gets into the radar of the new set of selectors. Badri and Kaif are both pretty good test prospects and can serve India easily for another 5-6 years.

Laxman's retirement is more or less confirmed. It looks like he might just play one test and retire at Hyderabad itself (the venue for the first test). So I think Raina or Rahane might play in the 2nd test in place of Laxman. That won't be a bad thing (if it happens)

Look at how you guys are treating Laxman, surely had it been Sachin retiring you wouldn't have been so happy! Laxman has been a servant to Indian cricket over the years, played one of the best inns ever witnessed in world cricket and the most rated by any Indian, far better than the flat bully little master himself, against the Aussies in 2001 series. Sad to see he is going he leaves a big void in the middle order which no youngster seems capable of filling, expect frequent batting collapses from the Indians now!

It might be that Laxman wanted to play his last Test on home soil, and give the fans a chance to say their goodbyes in person. That is also quite a noble thing to do in my view.

Sachin is a far better batsman than Laxman and Dravid. Flat track bully, my foot! You guys keep harping on that one Bangladesh ODI innings that Sachin took to reach his 100th ton. That makes him a flat track bully? In recent times, all Indian batsmen have failed somewhere or the other. Dravid had a great England series, but another torrid Australia series. Laxman was miserable everywhere. Sachin played short and small bursts of some decent innings, but never went on to notch up that big innings that people expect from him. Form wise, all three were even keel in the last year.

And Sachin staying on is good because atleast one senior remaining with the youngsters is good. And yes, if it was Sachin retiring in place of Laxman, I would have been disappointed because Sachin is the better guy to be in the dressing room with all the youngsters around. They will all listen to him more. In fact we have heard stories of younger players being scared to even speak up in front of Sachin.

Fair enough. But Dravid could also have opted to play this series as the final test is in Bangalore which is his hometown.

All in all mate youre a but rude to the guy, he have guided your team out of tunnels in many matches, the link below shows this, all I am saying is to show some respect to the great man just as you show respect to Sachin's sweat.

VVS Laxman 2nd Innings 281 vs Australia - YouTube

Rated by many pundits of the game as one of the greatest inns of all time and surely the best by any player.

I would actually be happy if Sachin retired, in a years time.

Didnt he said he would retire after the world cup? Could it be he is still hanging on to make money from endorsements as an active player?

I think Sachin still has 2 years of international cricket left in him. Expecting a better performance from him now that the monkey of the 100th ton is off his back.
