Official, confirmed, verified "You are the umpire" thread

Kookaburra - Australia
Dukes - England
SG - India

The big three are here, who cares for the others?

SG in India
Kookaburra in Australia
Duke in England and the WI

- And NO, both cricketing boards have to agree on the ball being used in a series, so there is a LOT of care for the others.

In other news, will be out of this for November...NaNoWriMo is coming up, and damned if I'll fail this year. Just back from 9 days in the UK and I'm definitely going to win NaNo this year for the second time. (Google it.)

I'm counting on you guys to keep this thread going.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

50,000 words in 30 days? No issue. But I need it to actually be a proper story. I have about half of it written in my mind but I can't start typing until the first of November.

What happens behind the Umpires back stays behind Umpire's back...!!
There are rules and then there are Umpires on field.
If the rules don't suffice the Umpire's decision sustains.

Against the Spirit of the Game. Umpire was correct in calling dead ball. Refer to match referee at the next interval.

Scenarios...

- A ball is hit for six into the crowd. For a few minutes the ball seems to have been stolen by an enthusiastic fan so you get a replacement ball. Three overs later you hear over your headset that the original ball has been found (and the offending party charged with larceny). Do you use the original ball or continue with the replacement and why?

- Do you accept cameras and mics on umpires? Subjective question, no right or wrong answer here.

- The fielding team appeals and reviews for a catch. The ball never hit the bat but the batsman seems to be plumb LBW. As the third umpire what do you say?

I have no idea about the Cricket laws but will try to give logical answer to this scenario. Once the ball is lost in crowd and replacement is used, I wouldn't use the lost ball, if I find it after some overs. Just because, it might be tampered by the fan or the actual condition of the ball might've been lost.

Yep, I do accept cameras and mics on umpires. It will give transparency to the umpire's decision and at times when umpire is not able to give decision, the third umpire can take the umpire's camera angle to give the decision.

Whatever possibilities are available to get out from that particular ball is checked and the decision will be given, either out or not out.

Let's, for the sake of discussion, say that it's the umpires who do the review for a catch close to the ground. But the batsman never hit the ball yet is caught on the pads right in front of the stumps. What then?

First of all we need to see what process is being followed these days. In such a situation what the 3rd Umpires would do is

1) Check the front foot no-ball
a) If it is a no-ball then it's not out
b) If it's not a no-ball go ahead with the process

2)Check for the edge (with ultra-edge or hotspot or whatever)
a)If edge found look for the catch
b) If not go for ball tracking

3) Check the catch (only if edge found)
a) If it's taken cleanly it's out
b) If it isn't possible to judge with the naked-eye then benefit out doubt goes to the batsman, in that case you go for the for the ball tracking

4) Check ball tracking
a) Pitching- In line or not
b) Impact- hitting or outside off or leg
c) Wickets- Hitting or missing

What the above instance says that "The ball never hit the bat but the batsman seems to be plumb LBW." So after following the process mentioned above, it's clearly Out :yes

The review system is only valid on appeal. Let's say nobody appeals. The big screen shows a clear out. The fielding team then appeals. What then?
If they appeal within 15 seconds it’s ok?

Technically, if the fielding side hasn't appealed they aren't supposed to show the ball tracking until the next ball is bowled. It isn't an official rule though, but it prevents the scenario I mentioned from happening.

EDIT: Theoretically speaking there is nothing in the Laws that says a team has to appeal immediately. They can be absolutely silent and wait until the replays show up on the big screen and then appeal. The appeal is still valid once the bowler is not into his delivery stride for the next ball.

Might be merged into my previous post but I absolutely disagree with the ICC on their decision to not allow captain Carlos Braithwaite to review the no ball call in the recent Bangladesh series. They appealed. The batsman was out. They reviewed. Simple. Allow the review.

Hmm...interesting one here. A bowler is legally allowed to take a practice runup. That's not in dispute, it's written. But the pitch will take spin. And you find that the opposition captain rotates his quick bowlers often at one end, all of whom which do a practice runup before each spell. This seems to scuff the pitch up for the spinner at the other end, who has actually bowled unchanged for some time now. Can you do anything?

(EDIT: A practice runup actually isn't particularly subject to all the rules regarding regular runups, you know.)
