India will move up to second in the ICC Test Championship, their highest ever position, if they beat Pakistan 2-0 in the three-Test series which starts at Mohali next Tuesday (March 8). A series victory by a two-Test margin would see them overtake England, while a 1-0 win would put them level on points but still in third when the ratings were calculated to three decimal places.
Pakistan, currently fifth, could leapfrog India into third but, they too, would need to win by two clear Tests to reclaim their best ever position in the table. A drawn series would mean the status quo is maintained but a defeat for Pakistan would mean they fall below South Africa into sixth if, as expected, South Africa complete a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe.
Pakistan are coming into this series on the back of a 3-0 defeat by Australia, but India have beaten South Africa and Bangladesh in their last two outings.
