KANPUR : The day at Green Park could not have been more dramatic. It began with confusion at the toss, followed by India's top guns being muffled by Pakistani pacemen and then the bowlers getting bombarded by the fours and sixes of the effervescent Afridi.
Even before anybody could utter "Toss ka boss kaun?," Inzamam-ul Haq was already talking to TV commentator Ravi Shastri, who mistakenly thought that the Pakistan skipper had called correctly. Rahul Dravid, who chased the rolling coin to the edge of the pitch, waved his hand towards Inzy. Shastri took it as a cue from the Indian skipper that Inzy had won the toss. Dravid then stopped Shastri in his track and asked match referee Chris Broad to clear the confusion. Now, Inzy could well have made an issue of it. But luckily the match referee was on hand to sort things out.
There was confusion in the press box too. But soon it became apparent that Shastri had jumped the gun and, as is the tradition, started talking to the captain who he thought had won the toss. Though Inzy too was eager to bat first, he took the Shastri gaffe in his stride without batting an eyelid.
In the past too there have been misunderstandings at the toss. There have been many embarrassing moments for the captains, both claiming to have called correctly. For a last few years, the ICC has made it mandatory for the match referee to supervise the toss. His presence saved the day, otherwise it could have become a contentious issue if both
