Pakistani Tour of New Zealand, Dec-Feb 2010/11

The problem I have is that when he did do that role he had really good players up the top to set things up for him (Fleming, Astle etc.) I don't think we can bank on getting good starts all the time with the current top order. But then again he has been opening the past couple of years and hasn't done great opening recently.

Franklin has done well in this innings. Just don't let him open the bowling.

I reckon they should try get to 265-270. That would be a decent total considering the horror start they had.

Pakistan deserve to lose this match tbh. How the hell can they let Franklin and Nathan Mccullum score so easily. Umar Gul has once again been responsible for letting the opposition off the hook. He bowled a spell of 6 overs for 39 when Kiwis were 139 for 6. I have said that before. Umar Gul should be dropped from ODIS. He is not consistent enough. Sohail Tanveer has also proven to be way too innocuous. If he can't make an impression on these wickets, he will be murdered in SC.

Nathan McCullum finally shows what he can do with the bat for New Zealand, about time, he was slowly heading towards pure bowler or bowler who can bat a bit status. That knock will definitely give him some confidence.

But yeah, overall awful showing from the batsmen. I haven't seen any of the game but it sounds like they threw their wickets away. :facepalm

Younis and Misbah are doing it all wrong. They're supposed to be batting slowly, stagnating the Pakistan innings. This partnership is going at almost 5RPO, which is much to fast for these two.

Dumb, they took the Powerplay too early, and have lost wickets as a result.
All teams do this.
If there is any doubt about whether to take the Powerplay, it means you shouldn't.
Far better to let the batsmen who are in whop a few more singles and twos to get their eyes in before taking it in the last 5.

Why did they bring on pace when Vettori took them apart, bring on Nathan McCullum or Scotty.

NZ pace at death = fail more times than not

----------

Now Bennett, massive over here, it'll probably decide the match.

Yeah that is just plain stupid tbh. Styris even has two overs left I would rather have him bowl. You really thought we would have learnt by now our pace bowlers cant bowl at the end. You see it also in twenty20 no one can hit slow bowling. Really poor captaincy from Vettori.

----------

I know Southee can bowl the odd yorker but he misses too often, McCullum and Styris, heck even Williamson should bowl instead.

----------

Great, and now it looks like Vettoris injured.

Slow bowling is only good when teams are not fully committed to slogging.
Slow bowling is made to look good when teams are in their "picking up singles with the occasional slog mode".
Bring on McCullum now and he will go for 30.
Spinners are useless at the death, even Saeed Ajmal.
Styris is the same, as are all niggly medium pacers, useless in the slog overs.
30 years of cricket watching has taught me this, you don't just look at the figures, you look at where and when, and also who they got out and how.
Sure, NZs pace bowlers are useless at the death, but their other bowlers would be more useless.
NZ just has useless pace bowlers fullstop (apart from Chris Martin in Tests, and Kyle Mills with the new ball in ODIs).

Obviously they're not going to be as good as Vettori, but if they're trying to "test" stuff out before the world cup, they might as well take that gamble, as pace failed last match.

Just as I say that, Razzaq is gone!

I wouldn't call Southee "useless", he's taken two fives this tour, and was very unlucky in the tests.
