Pakistan in deep trouble at tea

Pakistan were off to a very shaky start as they lost both of their openers by the time the score had reached 11. First to go was Yasir Hameed who edged one back to the slips in just the second over where Strauss took an easy catch. Then a few overs later Harmison picked up another crucial wicket when Salman Butt edged one to Butcher in an attempted cover drive. Pakistan 11/2.

Now with Malik and Inzi batting things seemed to have calmed down a bit for Pakistan, that is until Butcher started bowling and troubled them both. A bit later, Butcher was able to pick up Malik's wicket at a total score of just 38 runs.

Youhana had some beatiful strokes that put Pakistan in a steady position once again, but the loss of three early wickets could very well hurt Pakistan in the long run. At tea, both Inzi and Youhana were playing confidently and were looking to put up a much needed partnership for Pakistan.

Pakistan 79/3 (23 overs) - Day 3 (Tea)
Inzamam-Ul-Haq 32*(52) | Yousuf Youhana 24*(30)
Pakistan need 200 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand

Pakistan sink deeper in trouble, but Amir resists

Just a few overs after tea, the seemingly unstoppable partnership of Inzamam and Youhana slowed down due to the field placements by Vaughan. Youhana, who loves playing playing through the covers and scores most of his runs that way, didn't score any runs for a few overs due to the presence of 6 fielders on the off-side. The plan eventually worked for Vaughan when Youhana popped one up off of Butcher allowing an easy catch for Flintoff.

Just a couple of overs later, after hitting Harmison for 10 runs in one over, Inzamam edged off of Butcher back to the slips where Strauss took yet another diving catch to dismiss Inzamam at the score of 47.

After the dismissals of the top two Pakistani batsmen, Pakistan were now 99/5 and needed 180 runs to win with 5 wickets remaining and with the inexperienced Kamran Akmal and Muhammed Amir batting, things looked great for England. Both Amir and Akmal seemed to be resisting well against the English bowling attacks, relying mostly on singles, until Akmal popped one up trying to defend against a yorker from Anderson. Pakistan now 138/6.

After Akmal's dismissal, things were looking very bad for Pakistan. But with some smart planning from Amir, Pakistan are still somewhat in the game. By the end of Day 3, Amir had already scored 50+ runs and was taking most of the strike with Saqlain on the other end defending just about every delivery. Here are the stats from the last inning so far:

Pakistan 168/6 (30 overs) - Stumps (Day 3)
M. Amir 54*(81) | S. Mushtaq 6*(21)
Pakistan need 111 runs to win with 4 wickets in hand

Just an update...

Pakistan are now 198/6. Both Amir and Saqlain are still at bat. Anderson got a couple of edges off of the spinner but they both went through. Whoever wins this match is gonna have a close finish. Right now I have to go to work so I'll try to play through lunch (Day 4) by tomorrow. Cheers!!

Amir's century guides Pakistan home

After watching his seniors fail twice against the English bowling attack in this match, Amir took matters into his own hands. After reaching a very cautious 50, Amir took most of the strike and relied mostly on singles to score runs, even after being tempted by the English bowlers to go for the boundaries. It wasn't until he took Pakistan's score past 240 when he started showing off what other things he can do with the bat besides defending and taking singles. He reached his century in style, after hitting 13 runs to Giles in his first over, and with three wickets left, Pakistan was able to reach their target of 279 with ease.

Even though Amir's inning was priceless, another reason for England's defeat was the fact that Vaughan had the fields set up to stop runs, not to take wickets. Saqlain Mushtaq got edged quite a few times off of Hoggard and Harmison, but all of these went through and produced runs for Pakistan instead. It wasn't until Saqlain hit a bad shot off of Hoggard that England were able to take a wicket on the fourth day.

Pakistan now lead the test series 1-0. Here are the stats from the inning:

Pakistan won the match by three wickets
M. Amir 121*(171) | M. Sami 21*(51) | M. Butcher 21.2-0-79-3

Man of the Match

Thank you m_vaughan.

The Man-of-the-Match award went to Muhammed Amir (really a no-brainer) for his match winning score of 121 (not out) off of 171 balls and 7 wickets in the match at the cost of 104 runs at an average of almost 15 Runs/Wicket.

The next test match will be held in Faisalabad. More details on the match will be posted tomorrow. Thank you all for your comments on this thread so far, they all mean a lot to me. Hopefully the next match will be much more interesting than the first one. :cheers
