Can you pick up a wireless network straight away on PS3 or do you need wires?

Yes you can Lee. I myself use a wired connection from my router, but there is wireless capabilities so you should be fine.

You can use the wireless, though it will be less reliable than a wired connection (wireless has a habit of dropping packets and occasional long ping times).

The PS3 has in-built wireless. As far as I have heard the instructions on how to go online are fairly simple. Obviously you need a router for it to be able to connect...

Apparently it's quite a good connection too.

As Sureshot pointed out PS3 does have inbuilt Wi-Fi and also a ethernet port. But you need to have an Internet connection from an ISP. The registration of the account for PlayStation Network is free.

No, you can connect either the USB cable or the ethernet cable from the modem/router to the PS3. PS3 has provision for both. I am not sure about the USB cable but I think it should work.

USB will not work as it will require a driver to be installed, ethernet or wifi is the only way to go.
