Even though I don't own one it'd be PS3 all the time for me. I owned a 360 and it lasted 25 minutes before it got too hot. Ps3 is more expensive but technically it's a lot better, and with Blu Ray having a clear advantage over the HD DVDs PS3 games will be alot bigger.

I tend to agree with you Sureshot, but there i have a problem :p

Xbox's may technically be easier and more likely to break, but the year ahead of PS3 has hurt Sony's market. Saying that, i'll possibly purchase a PS3 a year down the line, when they are a little cheaper!

Not really, the PS2 is still outselling the 360 and PS3 isn't it? :D

The fact that Microsoft have had a year ahead of Sony in this console battle and still aren't ahead (imo) shows that the 360 was rushed, which it was. The reliability has hurt Microsoft, whereas Sony has had a good reliability feedback with the PS3.

Blu Ray makes PS3 more expensive and it may become useless for watching movies if HD-DVD wins the battle between the two formats. Microsoft provides a seperate HD-DVD player which I think is a better idea.

The point is though, where else could you buy a blu ray player for ?400??? You cant ;) so technically ps3 is cheap!

The problem with the separate HD-DVD player is game developers can't take advantage of it, I have seen many reports where games have had to have parts removed of the graphics made lower quality on the 360 to be able to fit on a DVD (some games just can't span to 2 discs). The extra available space on Blu-Ray is an advantage in many cases (it is a disadvantage if programmers get lazy though).

We've had Multi-Format wars for ages not many that have lost have actually been rendered useless and it won't be the case with something that's inbuilt into the most powerful gaming console on the planet, the fact that Blu Ray has a big size advantage means it's got a better chance of succeeding. Blu Ray won't die out and it'll be hugely popular. It'll certainly never be useless for watching movies.

As Whitehornmatt, the gaming companies which put out games over both the consoles (RockStar for instance) have said that it's trickier on the 360, and it'll mean 360 owners will need to do more downloading to get games (like GTA4) to the same level as a PS3 version of it.

For me the question of XBox360 or PS3 is simple.

Which is heavier?

I'd go for the heaviest one as it will be much better for being used as a doorstop, as is the fate for all consoles six months down the line from their purchase!

It's so heavy, it could be used as an anchor for countless battle ships, let alone a door stop. I reckon at £400 it's got to be a fairly cheap anchor?

The format that wins the battle wont be determined by technical superiority but by the number of companies backing it and the money put behind it. Buying a PS3 because it has a Blu Ray player so that you can watch movies on that format is not a good idea because it is very taxing on the reader. If it burns out in a couple of years then you'll have to buy a new PS3 whereas with Xbox 360 you'll only have to buy a new HD-DVD player.

PS3 may be the most powerful gaming console but its much more easier to take advantage of Xbox 360's processing power as compared to PS3. If there are enough PS3 exclusive titles then the developers might be able to take full advantage of the PS3.

To overcome the size constraints there are technologies known as compression and procedural generation. If the programmers cant put them to use effectively then they dont deserve to have a job. There is no need of 25 GB for current generation games.
