BBC Sport has stated the ICC has confirmed a 10 month trial of new rules for ODI are to be introduced from 30th July

In summary the changes are

Tactical substitutes for both batting and bowling teams

Fielding restrictions for 20 overs - first 10 overs are mandatory, plus two additional blocks of five overs selected by the fielding captain

looks the teams invovled in these new rules will be india, sri lanka and west indies when the tri series begin

the credibility of the sport iwill be challenged when such major and drastic changes are made, I don't think its a good idea, it could even be considered 'dumbing' down the sport.

I hate this idea!!! I also dislike twenty20

Why?

20/20 is great but Tests>any other type of cricket.

The substitute idea is good, the restrictions idea is brilliant. No lulls in middle of an innings.

Lets see how this idea before making a true comment! I feel it should be exciting! It might reduce the predictability of the game of an extent! We might see some bigger scores in ODI's as well some really low scores too (since the field restrictions are increased by 5 overs)!

One question regarding substitutes - does this change mean that only the 12th man can play in the game if decided by the captain or can any player in the whole squad substitute the player in the XI when the match is underway? This puzzles me! If this idea works, India will benefit a lot from it. They can now pack their side with 7 batsman (including the keeper Dhoni who is a batsman now!) and still have 5 specialist bowlers! Thats a brilliant bonus for the Indian team who are often criticised for going in with just 4 specialist bowlers in the ODI's

My opinion is - it wont ruin the game! Since all the teams involved will get the same rules, it kind of evens out! And it will make it more exciting! I am now terribly excited in watching the tri series between India, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. I want to see how this works with my Indian team!

It may work for India, but will still ruin the game in my opinion. As kevmead has stated in the similar thread in the news section, it takes away the tactical part of the game where you decide on the squad. 10 more overs of field restrictions make it harder for bowlers, whereas previously the had no restrictions, so even if they were going aggressive, they could have three men out. This also means allrounders would be practically useless, leading to more batters and specialist bowlers, and more likely, much higher scores, and I am pretty sure all of us here could agree that a low scoring thriller is way more exciting than a high scoring one. This just ruins the fun part of the game, where a bowler may not do much with the ball, but helps the team with the bat, or vice versa, because they might not even get a chance to play in the second innings for the team! I do not like it...ODI cricket was fine. Maybe if they had lowered the number of overs to about 40 it could be better...but not now. I really dont like this. And ODI cricket was all I and many of my cousins/friends bothered to watch, now its too complicated:(

Yea...like they drop Nehra for not being able to bat...he gets mad and says howcome Balaji can stay, who smashed Wasim for a couple of boundaries in the WC? I bet he couldn't do it, etc. etc...

I feel people who have such feelings do not deserve to be in the team, at all. Cricket is a team game and the team has to be united at any cost.

And the tactical changes in the squad still remains. See you have to select your squad of 12 before the toss. Say that you win the toss and bat first but you select a batsman as the 12th man, then you dont get a 5th bowler even if you want to becoz your 12th man is a batsman and he can be the only substitute to a player in the team. he can at best substitute a batsman but substituting a batsman is a waste becoz it is a waste substituting a specialist with a specialist. whearas when it comes to bowling, you can replace a batsman with a specialist bowler and have 5 bowlers to play with.

I don't think anyone will do that. They will originally have 7 bats and 5 bowl in the 12. If they bat first-7 bats and 4 bowls. if bowl first-6 bats and 5 bowl.

If the ICC dont have the power, who else should really have it?
