Proposed changes to ODI's

This will make more complex no doubt... Many things will have to be worked out by the captain and the coach. As we all know there are A B C plans for every game in cricket like if things go wrong then to work with plan B.

This will also make batting friendly game. Now there will be more 5 overs for the batsman to go over the top.

Lets see what happens now... They have decided to implement these rules from
30 th July i.e from the tri nation series (Ind/W.I/SL).

Also, Watson's 24 and Katich is 29 (but only just). You don't magically become slow once you turn 30. I know Ponting and Martyn are still quite nimble, as is Hussey.

Just trying to find any weakness ;)

The press have had a field day with the age of the squad. Test team is even older isn't it?

Also there are changes in the ICC Champions Trophy format too.

The trophy will consist of the top 8 teams, which is to be decided on the basis of the ICC rankings.
The top 6 will get qualified automatically.
The remaining two places will be decided by playoffs between the last 4 nations.
These playoffs will be held in India during the month of May 2006.

As of now India will have to play the playoffs.

What has it been lately?

Bowlers would be McGrath, Warne, Gillespie and Lee?

Actually the play offs will be right before the actual tournament. Which is something I suggested after the 2004 competition. I'm going to assume that my cheque from the ICC is in the post.

Looks like cricket is going the baseball /nba way. Trying to make it a very exciting sport for the rest of the world to pick up. With tactical substitutes etc.

I am sorry I did not go thru the first 4 pages of this thread. I apologize if this has been already discussed. But I just wanted to give my input regarding the new rules.

1. The substitute player rule will discourage the allrounders in the team. They will feel no longer required since a bowler can bowl 9 overs and get replaced with a batsman. Teams no longer require an all-rounders. People like Chris Harris (he may not be playing anymore... I am just giving an example) will no longer be required

2. The 20 overs field restriction will liven up the 20-40 over period. Lot of fielding teams will try to get rid of these overs in the beginning and some teams if they have the batting under control for first 10 overs might implement the two batches of 5 overs right after the first 10 overs making it first 20 overs of fielding restrictions rather than 15 overs.

This would only apply if you named your team after the toss, which you don't.

It doesn't matter really. Even before the match begins the teams won't pick an allrounder. Just to give you an example if I were R. Ponting, I would not pick S. Watson at all. I would rather have Clarke and B. Lee. If I am batting first and clarke does not get not out, I can replace Clarke with Lee when I am ready to bowl. If I am bowling first I will bowl McGrath for 9 overs and then replace McGrath with Clarke. Howzzat??
